I have been blessed to have had one housekeep/childminder for 24 years until she passed. My son gave the eulogy at her funeral in fluent Shona, her language that she taught him from birth. She was a single mother of three, my go-to person, and an extra grandparent to my children. I never had to instruct her on cleaning my home, never missed any of my possessions, and trusted her more than my relatives to care for my children. I too was a single parent but she made it so much easier. It has been 10 years since we lost her but we still miss her so much even though my children are adults with children of their own.

I think if you honestly feel that you must check the bag upon departure (like if it was a case of theft or impropriety), do it as they are packing, it's less invasive. Also and this is just me, when I can, I always take her to the nearest matatu stage, like if you live far from the road, it's fair and to avoid the drama/gossip outside with other house helps or watchmen who she may have known during her stay.

I hire househelps calmly,I take time to teach them what I need to be done, then I treat them like I would like to be treated if I was one, ofcourse after sometime they think am too good not to be taken advantage of;I watch them calmly and calmly from nowhere I tell someone, thank you for your work, here are your dues,go home, then I live their consciousness to sanitize them,Non of the househelps knows my yelling or I would look when sad.

I have learnt to check their bags on arrival and departure.
Their's this one who had a knife in her bag. Another with more than 10 phones in the bag, kumbe she used to steal in every house she worked. Another one had ARVs..... It's not like I discriminate HIV positive people but having small kids I wasn't comfortable.
Plus I don't have money to replace everything they steal. So I will always check. That's me

That Last tip is hard for me.The Last one I releasd ,I had just learned that she taking alcohol in my own house . Together with other househelp in the neighborhood. This is not even the reason I fired her.She took my child for vaccination without even telling me just because the neighbors did so(The one they do door to door) Yeah in this Nairobi where you can't even be sure they are genuine or not . when I asked her about it she denied and denied and even threatened to leave at night. We talked sense in her and she promised to change and even stay. But the following day after consulting her 'committee' she told me she want to leave ,she even said she is not feeling well.I later learned she stayed at my next door neighbor for a whole weekend coz my neighbor had travelled and left the househelp with kids.Sasa Hawa ndio suzzy unasema tupigie ujue kama alifika.Akudanganye akiwa next door?.She is a grown up.Whatever your destination is .May the Lord guide you .Good bye.

What! mine was eating tobacco and spitting at some corner in the sitting room. My baby was 2 months, so I could not imagine leaving her with him. Mother in law thought i was being fussy saying i cannot live with her i guess cos she brought her. I fired her after one month. Then another one had to go because she would leave my kids at night and go to sleep with the neigbors shamba boy while i was on work trip. oh yes, my friend was given a slap by the househelp when she fired her. then she refused to go. she had to call her mum and hubby to kick her out. i never check their bags for the 20 years I have employed them. most are not thieves,

It was drama on Friday. Kumbe she drinks throughout the week but I never notice because most times I am working, though still in the house. On Friday she went overboard I tell you, luckily I've been working from home. She was completely intoxicated. She'd take one step infront and fall two steps backward. Nilisomewa kama mtoto 😅, that she hasn't eaten fish in a whole month...and that I never leave the house. It took close to 3 hours to pack 2 backpacks because she'd pack and unpack...I recorded the whole thing. I've never witnessed anything like that.

Great content Suzzy. Educative & hilarious 🤣 at the same time. I can relate hapo kwa alcohol. My grandma once had a house help who used to take alcohol & we didn't know coz she was veryyyyy good with her house work. She one day went for her off day & came back home drunk peeing on herself. It happened thrice. Even as this happened we realized she was a thief. She had stolen from my grandma, us & the neighbors. For the neighbors it was when they hanged their clothes out to dry or when visitors come & leave their shoes at the door step. So after all neighbors complained, a meeting was held & one of the neighbors suspected her. My grandma sent her to a really far place to go & buy something so that she could check her room. Oh my after the search 🤦 my grandma found clothes,b.sheets, shoes & curtains enough to start a boutique. She left them in her room. When she came back from where my grandma had sent her, she came back tipsy & was rude (guess coz of the alcohol). At this point despite her being warned & her promise to change, my grandparents found enough reason to fire her being the 4th time she came home drunk. I was only 13yrs then but I can right now relate & understand why she had to be fired.

Number 5 of reasons to fire is my top. My children were the reason I hired, so even acting in a manner to suggest unkindness to children was my cue to pack my diaper bag and take my babies to work. FAYAAD!
Suzie, I love your videos. I loved the part of your house tour where you said, ' ...if you like looking at people's houses....' 🤭that's me!
Please do a step video on how to prep your home and family for a life independent of house helps. And keep up your good work.

Thanks for this,I fired my last nanny in the morning since she was very rude to my kids and me.She even pinched my daughter and shouted at my son.She looked violent and always clicked on being given instructions. The morning I released her I just told her I had gotten another job and was leaving the country.Paid all her dues via mpesa and she left.I was really avoiding the confrontation,I even thanked her for taking "good care " of my children.

I had this nanny .. I had stayed with her for a week . There come Easter.. I had to travel upcountry and instructed her I wanna give her permission to go home for Easter.. offered her fare .. n a little stuff to take home . We agreed she will come back on Monday 11.00 am...
On very Monday at 11.0am she texted me she won't come on very day ..." They are going to certain town to sign documents with the mum" mark you am the one who gave her permission but she decided to extend...
I called her if she won't come akujie bag zake .
She came around 1700hrs to collect her bags .. unfortunately kcb app wasn't working .. I told her I will pay you later in the day .. the kcb app disappointed me too.. she called me the following day uttering insults .. hapo ndipo nilijua kumbe sikukosea that I saw she had umangaa and she had pinched my son for nothing..I felt pain. My policy hire and fire

I think it is very important to check the bags, for me not necessarily because of the theft, i don't care what she takes if she is stealing it, some house helps carry cloth, photos, combs for witchcraft, so why not check just to be conscious. Better to be safe than sorry. Besides the checking can be done respectfully. I usually check them when they come and as such check them when they are leaving too.
