    I wish I lived near one of these. I would get to hear these kinds of things so often and it would be such a stress reliever for me

    Many years ago, as a teenager, I played the single-octave carillon at our church. I was the first girl to have that privilege and loved every second of it. Of course my abilities were nowhere near yours, but thank you for taking me back to those great memories. Berlin is lucky to have you.

    I would imagine that playing the carillon puts a lot of wear and tear on one's hands.

    In 1989 I stood in the Unter den Linden, listening to this carillon from the other side of the Wall. I watched couples walking east of the Brandenburger Tor, listening to the bells, knowing that I could easily cross the border into the West and they could not.

    Wonderful how he plays and the repertoire he uses is striking. In real it is an impossible instrument. The overtones of bells are in minor. It is the wonderful character of a carillon but at the same time its limitation. In the Netherlands they ever constructed bells with major overtones, no carillon player liked it.

    First time when I dig into this instrument... there's a lot of footwork going on in playing this instrument (I guess it's similar with an organ) - but I'd have loved to see some of it filmed, though...

    Such wonderful, gentle, smooth playing by Jefffrey!
    Well done video!
    What a fantastic view!
    "Tremolo" - a ridiculous sound which should not be inflicted on innocent people.
    (Yes, fff in Jefffrey.)
    31:16 Why does the low Bb sound strange? What a wonderful, fun piece!

    • @AndrewJirele
      @AndrewJirele 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because he's playing C and D together... The carillon is transposed down one whole step, thus C + D = Bflat + C

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tremolo is sounding octave notes as though trilling them. Unnatural and undesirable.

    How does a person learn to play an instrument of this size?

  • @stephenallen1149
    @stephenallen1149 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The tonal qualities of a carillon are so complex that it can make some music nearly unintelligible; however part of the problem may be my sound system, which is not excellent. I hope I can get a better system at some future time. (I am currently resorting to some really old [1930] headphones, my other ones having failed.) (It is worth noting that the 1930 headphones, although not a masterpiece of high fidelity, are durable in a way that the newer ones were not). However, a certain composition that I think was originally for piano came through fairly well .

    A carillon requires its own technique, being played by feet and fists (instead of fingers). I wonder how players practice and learn-without driving the town nuts. 😮

    *THIS IS CALLED A CARILLION. CARILLON IS THE FRENCH WORK FOR A GLOCKENSPIEL. EVERYONE GETS IT WRONG!!!!*

    • @andromedaturnbull3512
      @andromedaturnbull3512 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, sadly. "Carrilion" is French for "chime" more generally, which can also refer to a glockenspiel, but it's not the "French word" for one, I'm afraid. It is "le glockenspiel" for the standard instrument, or a keyboard bell instrument such as a celesta (including a carrilion de bâton) as "jeu d'timbre".

    @Engerlingraucher 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ...ganz ehrlich: Dieses Carillon ist mit Abstand das hässlichste, das die Glockengießerei in Asten jemals verlassen hat! Jeffrey könnte seine spielerischen Fähigkeiten auf einem wirklich guten Carillon noch besser demonstrieren. Für Berlin ist dieses Carillon wahrlich eine Schande; ich hoffe, dass es beizeiten gegen ein besseres ausgetauscht wird...!
