What’re you smoking? Vastly different characters with different motives and contrasting performances. These two antagonists don’t have too much in common whatsoever.
The book was soooo much more gruesome. From cutting off his foot with an axe, blow torching the stump, running a lawn mower over a young officers face, like holy crap
Remember the strands of hair as traps? Making Paul drink his urine or die from dehydration. The book was seriously messed up! Stephen said it was about his cocaine addiction that was his biggest fan. He said it was slowly trying to cripple and kill him. Annie Wilkes=Cocaine Addiction.
When you see some stupid scary slasher character murder someone with a butcher knife, it can be gross and spooky. But in this movie, when there's real characters with development, a fragile lady swinging a hammer at a man's legs can be so much more psychologically terrifying. Character is where true horror comes from
I completely agree. And I love how layered Annie is. She's insane and terrifying but there are a couple scenes that show her in a deep depression that makes her more realistic. She's a very sick, sad woman who seriously needs mental help. People like Annie exist. Very well written character and Kathy's performance made it incredible.
Imagine if he wrote the script to Misery...scrap that, imagine if George R. R Martin wrote every movie script, The Emoji Movie would be worth watching.
“She can go from the sweetest woman on earth to a complete psychopath, like THAT!” By this definition I have dated a lot of of Oscar worthy ladies... perhaps exclusively.
When you said that Kathy Bates winning an oscar is the only time an adaptation of a Stephen King novel led to an oscar winning, I couldn't believe it. My first reflex was to assume that The Green Mile or Shawshank Redemption won at least 1 academy awards....but they didn't. The academy awards makes no sens at all sometimes

Slade Wilson Very true. My roommate's murderer tried the whole Cathy Bates thing. Through the whole trial and penalty phase retrial, she was like the nice Cathy Bates and was quite fakr. It was proven in coirt beyond doubt just how much she was like psycho Cathy Bates. She did far worse than a mallet. Now she's rotting away in prison. There are many things that I wouldn't put past anybody.
No. There were a lot of differences between the film and the novel. She doesn't hit him with a sledgehammer in the book. She cuts off his feet. The book and film are way different, for many reasons. Pet Sematary is really faithful, and so is the TV miniseries of The Shining.
I believe Kathy Bates was amazing in Stephen King's "Delores Claiborne." Although she played a much more subdued character, her accent and facial expressions were on point. While that film did not receive any where near the same praise or attention, both of these films prove how versatile and commanding Kathy Bates is as an actor. As always, Chris, I thoroughly enjoy watching your reviews. Well done!
Yeah, Because it seems like a crash like that wouldn’t break both of your legs. And damage you arm. Maybe, but it seems like a good theory, that fit in the movie.

One of these movies that really deserves the predicate masterpiece. The flawless and believable performance(s) of Kathy Bates (also James Caan was great) transporting the tension into your living room, makes this movie so great. A+ it deserved well.
Here is the strange part, this was always one of my favorite films. I went to see the Broadway performance of this story a couple years back. Laurie Metcalf played Annie, and Bruce Willis played Sheldon. Bruce was...ok Laurie Metcalf played the hell out of that role. Almost equal to Kathy Bates.
Fantastic review. One of my favorites from Stuckmann. I loved the fact that he recognized how Caan's role was pretty ballsy to do. I had never thought of that. Kudos Chris.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Omg what a masterpiece this has always been. If I lived amongst the time of Shakespeare, this would hands down be my Hamlet. Blows me away each time I watch it. ❤ good Lord they should never have to work again after these performances.
The best King adaptation, hands down. There's no overblown drama and there's now overblown horror, like in most other King's adaptations. Just a frightningly realisitc story, that might have as well happened in real life, which makes it so compelling.

With that being said I would love to see you do Frank Darbonts most underrated movie (imo) The Mist. Shawshank and Green Mile overshadow The Mist but I'd love to see your thoughts on it.
I watched this film many times but I loved it in every moment even the cinematography has great potential by Barry Soddenfeld. It has great psychological terror by Kathy Bates' evil character. This best film never gets old and brilliant. A+ for me. It's a masterpiece. Also it's a 30th Anniversary this year. Wanna watch it again. Love this film.
Misery is one of the best Stephen King's adapted flick of 1990. It's 30 years old now but this flick aged well because it's so original. Stephen King is the best author for doing something in suspense and terror. I really love this movie a lot. It deserves an A+.
Absolutely adored this movie when I first watched it. My grandfather had a go at my mother for letting me repeatidly saw it - saying 'What you letting her watch this for? Can't you see the woman is crazy?' I was like - yeah, that's why Kathy Bates won an Oscar for it!

Richard Farnsworth was excellent in David Lynch's The Straight Story. His performance is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking.
One of my favourite horror/thriller movies. Everything is on point here, the acting, the music, the editing. Great review as well.
