Obviously the information in this video is also valid for other columnar sacred cacti in the Trichocereus genus, such as the Peruvian Torch (T. Peruvianus) or Bolivian Torch (T. Bridgesii). I live in the high desert and let my San Pedro dry for a week or so. Then I put them in a pot 1-2-3 per pot depending on size. I water them from the bottom up meaning I put them in a saucer full of water. This moistens them and lets them have the water they want at a later time. They stay on the dry side. But not completely dry. I loose about one of one hundred. They like lots of light but not direct sun for the first couple months. After that they are on their own. I never give them full sun unless they are in ground.
This video solved a problem I have! I'm going to cut a San Pedro I was gifted that had gotten thin at it's thickest point and then do a Log style with the skinny parts!
I have just started watching these videos and they are very informative. Excellent . I have grown a few cacti before but nothing for a while. I think growing cacti now is going to become a new hobby of mine.

I have a Trichocereus Candicans. I didn’t let the cutting dry before planting , it took though:) I also did a successful double graft. I grafted two cuttings one on top of another in series and it took. The double grafted FRANKENSTEIN 🌵 has been alive for 14 years now. :)

Just check his video on the "PC" variety to make sure you've got a sacred cactus because MANY in the USA are the PC variety. But being an old one in California, it may very well be the real deal.

I've found that water troughs are a great pot for planting log-style! Just be sure to drill or punch some drainage holes. I've got several foot-long dogs (now that they're grown-up "pups", right?) after only ~3mo, and the logs are still popping out new pups. They're inside under grow lights for the winter now and flourishing! I'll likely have to cut and propagate them within 2 years to keep them manageable. Just be patient in the first month or two and life, uhhh, finds a way.
Definitely gonna give this a try.
I have a long pot that was given to me. They're like for the window boxes full of flowers that the British used to do. They would build a box attached to the outer wall of the house below the window so when you opened the window the scent of the flowers would blow into the room. They're around at least here in Australia but you've got to get rummaging thru the pot section of the hardware store

Should I leave the cutting in a pot 3:1 ratio perlite:soil WITHOUT water until it roots,
Then put into soil, wait 5 days before first watering?

@SanPedroMastery Thank you so much for this video it was such a great help. However, I heard you mention if the cactus has roots already do not water for 3-4 days after repotting. However, what if it doesn't have roots yet but has callussed and is ready to plant. Should I still wait 3-4 days before watering or how long should I wait before I water it?

Yes, always wait for the ends to dry out before potting. Same for log style.

And thank you so much for watching my videos! :) Hard to say how many hours! It depends where you live. Here in Spain, they can grow in the shade, but prefer a few hours of sun every morning or afternoon. In the North of Europe, Scandinavia or Canada, the sun is less strong and they may need more hours. You have to try and look at the color, if they are turning a little yellow, they are getting too much sun.

hi , I'd like to ask you if I can put my cutting in just pomice or perlite in order to make them root ? instead of using your mix of 3 parst perlite and one part soil , then do you keep the cactus cuttings out of the direct sun light when you're tring to make them root ? how moist must be the soil when the cuttings are just stared to root ? thank you so much for your useful videos
So, while I have a cutting resting on perlite, do I keep it out of direct light while it's rooting, and should I be misting it? I took a cutting after using the base as rootstock to graft with, and dipped the cut end in #1 Hormex rooting powder, then allowed it to callous for a week, and have used straight perlite in the past, but can add ¼ soil to it. And, should I be misting the cactus periodically, wetting the rooting powder and such, or no? I've heard all different recommendations, and know you know cacti as well as anyone, so I want to do exactly what you do. I've always kept them out of direct light and would mist daily, at least with lophs and such. Just want to make sure I'm not doing anything that's hindering my success rate with any of these cacti. I'm sure the rooting powder isn't totally necessary, and they'll probably root no matter if they're in the light or not or being misted or not, so if that's the case, I won't deprive them of light for extended periods, or spray them down for no reason, if I can just keep them in my tent under full light as they root, or whatever (that way they won't etiolate, hopefully).

Hi! Great video :) I'm new to cacti plants so I found your video very helpful. My end cutting doesn't have roots - they've been cut away and only a neat stump remains at the end. It's a single very tall san pedro. So, I plan to cut it in two parts - an 'end' part that will become a mother plant and a single long top cut to be rooted and potted on its own. the part i'm unsure about is the end cut and what i should do with the stump that doesn't have any roots. Should i cut off the stump, wait for it to callus and then plant - or should I leave the stump and follow one of the rooting methods you mention in this video?
If the roots have been cut away it should behave like any other cutting and push out new roots when in contact with soil. I would replant it like it grew into initially damp soil and not water again until it puts out some roots.
My cutting is now almost 18 months old. It has been grown from a middle cut placed horizontally, like a log. However, only one pup grew. The log piece is 5.5 inches and the 18 month old cactus is now 27 inches. Would there be a reason why other pups did not also grow, the pot is 16.5 inches in diameter so nice and big? And if I cut the 27 inch piece to propagate,how many pieces should I cut it into? I have read anywhere from 6-12inches.
What you CAN do is cut the 27 inch piece and pups will cone directly from where it's cut. I have recently bought what was a collapsed cacti that was only 3 or 4 inches long laying on the ground and it rooted itself and has about a 16 inch pup and 2 tiny ones on top of each other coming from another part. I got it bare rooted and staked it.

I just got a few San Pedro middle cuttings in the mail... one had a tiny spot of rot on the bottom callous.. used a sterile tomato core to scoop it out... then I put cinnamon on the wound.. I have it forming a callous a few feet in front of a small fan .. I just purchased cocofiber to start roots ...can I just place it on the coco fiber... should I midt the coco fiber a bit or is it fine just to leave it alone with no mist?
Can I do this with booby cactus? I've made my cuts and waiting to plant. I know they are a different kind, but a neighbor moved and let us have half of her 40 year old cactus! It's gorgeous and I want to propagate for more! Thanks for your information, very good videos!
do you have to store the top and middle cuttings in any specific condition? like if you keep them in a dark place will it stop it from growing thin?

I have got some large cuttings with large girth. It is winter here, and it may reach -5 C for a few hours at night. Does it only postpone the rooting process or it may kill the plant? Should I wait 2 months and plant them early in spring?

Let it dry out first. Straight to soil is terrible advice! ;D Count a week drying time for each inch of section. So for a 3" section, that would be 3 inches. Make sure it dries in a well ventilated area, like on your terrace or in your garden, preferably in a shady or half shady spot. Good luck!

What if the base part has almost zero roots or roots that are dry from being found broken off on the floor?
Would you suggest a bed the base and let it get roots before cutting or would you cut The dried root base off and take it from there?

I have a domed piece. I put it in pearlite to try to root it. It has a fuzzy little knob on the side that look like a root ball growing. Should I cut that off and plant it?????

You do not water them at all until they have grown some roots. You will now they have grown some roots when you try to lift the cutting ever so gently, and you feel some resistance. Do not try it too often, or you will keep breaking the first roots. Check on the roots every 2 months or so. :)

I have a bunch of 2ft top cuts I recently purchased and I layed them down on the floor on a piece of cardboard. They’ve been on the floor in the dark in my garage for 3 weeks and I see the tips turning starting turn yellow. Do you know why they’re turning yellow?

i use the log method to root my cuttings but ran into the problem of catepillars eating along the bottom of the log were it is unoticeable until the cuttings start to rot the alkaloids in the skin doesnt seem to bother whatever caterpillar is eating them i have no choice but to grow them indoors with less light

Used some buffered coco mixed with half coco half pearlite heavy on the pearlite a SMALL spoon of crushed organic fertilizer mixed in just to give coco some nutrition in a green boulder cup (aldi 's brand)n I watered after re potting doh! That sounds about right for a plant that has roots. If yours has not rooted yet, then that should be OK, but no more sun than that.

I would do 2-3 diameters deep, though if it is very long you can go deeper to give it initial stability before the roots take over.

The best way I know is to let the cutting calous for a week or two. It will turn whitish and be dry and hardened then you root it as he did sitting on the soil or just plant it. You don't water it until you have roots.

I would try to root it now. Make sure you don't water it until Spring.

If your cutting has no roots, it's best to not water it at all, as it cannot absorb any water. Watering a cacti that has no root will often lead to rot.
Is there any concern about making a cutting while the cactus is blooming? I was about to make a cutting, and then noticed that I have quite a few flowers beginning to bloom. So now I'm conflicted. I've looked and looked for the answer to this. Thanks!
Just a guess but the flowering might reallocate how nutrients are distributed and reduce its ability to root and resume vegetative growth. No clue tho I haven't tried but that's what I would guess.

Yellow sulphur or cinnamon powder from the spice section of the grocery store. Absolutely keep it dry even if that means some cotton buds and half a paper cup on top. After a few weeks it should be dry
Hi I live in northen Canada and I have been growing lophophora species for many years now and I am new to TH-cam as well as the internet so I've never had any information or tips on growing them I learned everything from trial and error from learning to figure out which with the best Lighting systems I recently this year started making my own lights with different types of LEDs which have been far superior to any metal halide or high pressure sodium or any type of fluorescent. t5s is what I was using prior which were working great but nothing compares to the new style of LEDs with the right spectrum for cacti. Three of the species of loaf of phora I have I can't seem to find any info or other ones like them. One of the species grows spines instead of Tufts of fur and when it flowers it flowers a dark purple flower with a light pink stripe the other species I have gets very large and when it flowers it will flower a yellow or orange flower and well fruit all year round. All three deserts where I collected the seeds of these cactuses no longer exists one of the cactuses is now a small town another was turned into a cattle ranch and another was also developed into a housing community I'm quite sure that nobody else has any of these three species have been looking very hard I would love to share some seeds with you and would appreciate if you could look at my video and check them out thank you
Nice collection of peyotes! You don’t have the weather for it in Northern Canada, but when there’s a will…!! Good to hear the LEDs are working out well for you, this is something I need to get into myself (but just for starting seedlings in the winter, so I won’t need anything powerful). For the ID of your unusual cacti, I’m sure some people will know the species or strains if you post photos on a cactus message board.

Hi, I am trying to propagate a type of cereus cactus but while cutting I found a wooden core. I was wondering if this is okay and after drying this will root, or should I cut higher to avoid the wooden core?
The old ones have a tough core. Don't know about wooden but if it's dry or a rust colour, it's screwed so cut higher

Of course. That is only part of the soil mix, but every recipe includes some source of organic nutrients in addition to substrates that are more about structure and water-management (like coco coir, sand, and perlite). Eventually the compost's nutrients will be depleted and you'll either need to add more on top (or repot) or start supplementing with a fertilizer.
