  • This is a DIY installation of a 12” electronic rear view mirror on our 2022 Airstream Interstate 19, which is on a 2020 Mercedes Sprinter chassis. It was much easier than we anticipated.

    Saw this and a just installed my rear view camera in same spot! Thanks. Instead of silicone around the cable entry site I used butyl tape and sandwiched the cable between two layers. Probably overkill but I hate leaks.

    You guys have more courage than me when doing this kind of stuff. I am always afraid of breaking something. May I suggest that maybe you guys paint over the bare metal that was exposed after you drilled to make the hole bigger. Even though its small, it might be a spot where rust can start to form if bare metal is exposed. Just a thought. Look forward to more videos.

    No need to drill holes - the upper rear camera is accessible by removing a few screws in the storage space above the bed. With the screws removed, the upper bar across the door can be accessed from the inside. I also found the connector to the (removed) rear cargo lamp - will be using it to add light in the storage under the bed.

    I viewed this video a year ago or so, but I have a question for you since you've had the electronic rearview for a while. I also have a 2020 Sprinter 4x4, but not the Airstream. Question. Do you like the electronic mirror more, or the mod so the Mercedes backup camera can be turned always on? Thank you for another great video! Your husband is so lucky to have you to install all the Sprinter modifications!

    • @BamBamRVAdventures
      @BamBamRVAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your kind words. 🤗 We love the electronic rear view mirror and haven’t use the Mercedes back up camera mod much at all. We kinda play around with the zoom function just to get it as realistic as possible. We installed the electronic rear view mirror in our previous class B and our other cars too so we are used to how it looks.

      @@BamBamRVAdventures Thank you so much for the quick reply! I just ordered almost the same unit you installed, but the one I got has an third camera for an inside view and some form of GPS. Not sure about what the GPS does since I just ordered it today. Did you hook up the wire for reverse to show the gridlines? I think I'm going to use the mirror without the reverse gridlines and wonder if this is what you have done as well. Again, thank you so much for the quick reply and for the great videos! Thanks for posting this. I'm wondering how the original camera was waterproofed by airstream. did it have rubber grommets only? When you installed your new camera did you simply squeese the wire under the existing camera then use a silicon caulk? I did discovered the rear (in your case, grey) panel does some completely off after you remove the two screws providing access to roof, however, my Tommy Bahama obstructs the camera hole. Im installing when the Indiana weather warms a bit.

    On the rear factory housing for the backup camera; did you have to dissemble it and drill a hole into it? Thx again for a great channel.

    • @BamBamRVAdventures
      @BamBamRVAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, we didn’t drill a hole in the housing. We just put it over the camera wire and screwed it back down. We used the double sides tape to mount the camera to the housing then just used clear waterproof caulk to caulk around the base of the housing.

    • @BamBamRVAdventures
      @BamBamRVAdventures  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jeff, with the Mid City Engineering hack we can only see the back view on the small screen and we kinda have to look down toward the screen whereas with the electronic rear view mirror we look up like looking at the original rear view mirror. We are used to looking at the electronic rear view mirrors since we have them in our other cars at home and don’t find it distracting. At first I didn’t like it when I first used it in his Vette and kept switching it back to regular view but I eventually got used to it and like it since I can see the back way better.
