- Once Islamnagar was the capital of the then Bhopal State and is now situated about 20 kms from Bhopal city and is home to the magnificent Islamnagar Fort. It was built by the first Nawab of Bhopal Dost Mohammad Khan. Dost Mohammad was an Afghan commander in the Mughal army who rose to power and built the Bhopal State.

भोपाल से लगभग 20 किलोमीटर दूर बसा है इस्लामनगर। यह जगह भोपाल रियासत के शुरूआती सालों में उसकी राजधानी थी। यहीं मौजूद है इस्लामनगर का ऐतिहासिक किला। इस्लामनगर के किले को भोपाल रियासत के पहले नवाब दोस्त मोहम्मद खान ने बनवाया था। अफगान मूल के दोस्त मोहम्मद खान मुगल सेना में कमांडर थे। उनकी बहादुरी और किस्मत ने उनका साथ दिया और वे भोपाल रियासत की स्थापना करने में सफल हो सके।

Although the music in this video is calm and non-intrusive, why is Indian classical instrumental music not used here? The wistful spirit of bygone days, and these ruins which bemoan the loss of a great civilization, will best be evoked with the use of Sarangi in the background [although not too heavily]. My other suggestion is that the presenter should use simple Urdu for her commentary, which she has already done at the beginning of this video, but which she exchanged for heavily sanskritized language towards the end, which I for one did not understand. Remember Urdu is not a foreign language, but evolved over 800 years in India. Hindi is the language of bhajans, dohas and folk songs, as well as in thumris and dadras. It also exists in the spoken form in local dialects, such as Bhojpuri, Pahari, Brij bhasha and Khari boli etc. Urdu, while sharing some syntactic and grammatical features with these spoken dialects, is best suited for commonly understood communication across the length and breadth of the subcontinent. It is also the language of refined and elegant poetry and prose, of which there is written literature going back centuries. Unfortunately, political hatred and ignorance is doing a great disservice to this amazing language which was a source for enriching people's lives in the past without distinction of caste, creed or religion. A couple of generations ago hundreds of thousands of Hindus, Sikhs and Christians knew how to read and write Urdu fluently. Now, the teaching of the Urdu script has disappeared almost completely from schools in India, and the younger generations from all backgrounds are growing up speaking a degraded form of language without regard and access to its real communicative power. These younger generations are the real losers.
