      I'm using a rotary hammer and the tile just vaporizes before it comes up. Then I get to try and scrape away the mortar with the hammer as well. Thinking of renting one of those stand up tile removers.

      They definitely didn't do a great job of laying this tile, I did luck out there. A couple rooms where the tile was older and likely done before the previous owners that did this floor were harder to remove but I followed the same process, just took longer and caused more back pain lol.

    This is a great instructional video. It does not matter if the tiles are easy to remove or very difficult to remove the video is a “how to” video and is only intended to show you the proper steps in doing the job. How many would be willing to sit down and watch a video where it takes five minutes to remove one tile? That would get boring very quickly. She may have already loosened the tiles for video purposes. Either way, it’s a great video.

      @TheNiftyNester  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Randall! I appreciate your comment. And yes, I sped up the video because no one wants to watch this in real time. My tiles were poorly installed by the previous owner but the method is the same no matter how hard they are to remove. I appreciate your comment 😊

  • @nailbndr9869

    Definitely lucked out, diy'er install with the cheapest thinset. Usually the tile comes up with a demolition hammer easily but a quality thinset on a prepped floor is a bear to get up. When I bid a tile floor removal, I'll do a test on a few tiles to give a fairer price to homeowners.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured it was either cheap, they didn't use enough or just didn't know what they were doing. That's kind of the running theme throughout my house. It's a big undertaking. That's good to know about the demolition hammer for future reference. Do you remove the thinset with a similar tool to what I used or do you have another method you prefer?

    • @nailbndr9869
      @nailbndr9869 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use a thinset removal bit for a sds plus hammer. It's about a 4" wide blade. I have my own bosch sds rotary hammers but for a lot of square footage I rent them because it's super hard on the hammers... I'd rather put the miles on rentals than my own, lol.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do need to order some wider bits before doing another room, the one I have isn't very wide. 4" would probably save me a little time. We have a couple rooms that have original tile that isn't going to come up as easily as this room did.

      @@arturoalejandro2965 yeah I've gotten a few of these responses lol. I'm not a professional, I'm just a homeowner sharing my diy experience as it is for me. After removing tile in a couple rooms I thought "hey, I'll share this with my viewers". It seems like the method is pretty much the same, I just lucked out and the previous owners did a horrible job on the tile. So it looks easy and it might not be this easy for everyone else (sounds like it likely won't be). I do wish I would've understood that better and worded it differently, even warned viewers of that difference. You live and you learn.

    Are you familiar with walk behind diamond concrete grinders and, if so, would you have used one if your project area was larger.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. When I first removed the tile in my kitchen and dining room I thought about going that route. They're pricey and I knew I had multiple rooms to do so I didn't want to rent one every time I tackled another floor. We already had the hammer drill so I only had to buy the chisel bit. Grinders are also worse about dust and we have an asthmatic kid so that didn't seem like the best route to go. All things considered this seemed like the most cost effective, least dusty option. You can definitely go that route, it would probably be easier for a larger space. That being said, if you're going to be pouring epoxy or staining the concrete without pouring leveler throughout the space then yes, I would definitely use a diamond grinder. Sorry for the long response lol.

    If I am wanting to just lay new tile, can I be much more casual with the thinset removal, and just put on a much thicker layer of thinset than I would have done otherwise?

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  ปีที่แล้ว

      So I've seen people pour self leveler over floors with a little thinset left on the floor to level them out before installing new tile but that's a more expensive route to go if your subfloor is already level and in good shape. Otherwise you kinda have to remove the thinset. The thinset makes your floor bumpy and uneven so, even if you use extra thinset to install the new tile, your floors are going to be uneven and the tiles won't sit right. It's a hassle but kind of unavoidable.

  • @angelf9800

    Do you have to remove the thinset if you are only installing carpet over it.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't personally installed carpet but I would guess that you probably need to. If you don't remove the thinset you might have issues with the padding underneath sticking and you might even be able to feel the thinset through the carpet.

    I don’t know if anyone here has mentioned it, but clearly those tiles were poorly bonded! J/K. It’s like people don’t read the comments first before they post, because it was mentioned like 100 times.
    Anyhoo, I’m getting ready to take on the task of removing tile from my kitchen, entry, hallway, and bathrooms, and I’m pretty nervous about it. I’m hoping whoever installed it did an equally terrible job of applying the bonding material before laying the tile. I will save this video for future reference. Thanks!

    There is absolutely no thinset on that floor. I mean, that's an exaggeration obviously, but it's missing about 95% of what it should have. You really lucked out.

    After moving into our new home, maybe because we live in the tropics, the adhesive from the peel-and-stick flooring started to ooze out between the cracks especially in areas of high foot traffic or heavy furniture applying constant pressure. Have you noticed any issues? 🤔

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! That sounds awful. Where I live it can get pretty hot in the summer but it's nowhere near tropical weather. I haven't had any issues like you're having but I don't know if the heat and humidity could be causing issues like that where you live. I wish I had an answer for you that would help but I don't. Peel and stick tiles might just not work well in that climate. I hope you find the answers you're looking for though!

      @TheNiftyNester  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been a while since I bought that bit but I'm pretty sure I couldn't find the one I needed at Lowe's, I know I bought mine at Home Depot. You want a tile and thinset removal bit. They come in different sizes and fit different sized rotary hammer drills. I think I linked one from Amazon in the description as well that's similar to the one I used. Check Home Depot though, I always have better luck there with tools and bits. I hope that answers your question, let me know if you need any more help. Good luck!

    Way over kill, another trick is to spray the floor with white vinegar it acts like an acid will not hurt the concrete but will break up the thinset much easier if you're laying a thick laminate flooring you don't have to be too concerned unless there's really super high ridges

    • @adriennej.4428
      @adriennej.4428 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pure white vinegar or diluted?

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only ever seen vinegar used to clean thinset off of porcelain tiles that people wanted to keep but I'll look in to using it for thinset removal, I've never heard of that trick. With peel and stick tiles, which is what I installed, the concrete needs to be as smooth and clean as possible. I would imagine laminate would adhere better to a smooth surface as well. If there's even the smallest peaks left on the floor you aren't going to get great adhesion with tiles like that.

    • @TheNiftyNester

      This flooring is less than a dollar per square foot. The cost difference is the reason I went with peel and stick. I've had it for about 8 months now and haven't had a single one peel up, they look like new. Someday when I can afford real wood or tile I'll make the change.

    Can't be stressed enough after watching a bit of this video. Tiles are SUPPOSED to be stuck on hard and way harder then these to remove. Not only lack of thinset but appears also over time moisture has worked its magic on the adhesive making it . . . not adhesive.
    Just finished removing over 600 2"x2" tile squares - took 6 hours with a rotary hammer drill & chisel.
    These ones in this video? Too easy - don't be fooled viewers!
