    Thanx for the demo. I've wanted to go out and mine my own for a long time. Your screen idea is totally cool. I know where there is a layer of red clay that I once got stuck in. It is about 6 inches below the surface and is slicker than snot. I'm heading out this weekend and take some samples. Thanx again for getting the bug back awake in me for ceramics. It's been an awfully long time.

    You've definitely inspired me to attempt to dig my own clay at least once. Nothing sounds as satisfying as having a piece of pottery that you personally dug out of the earth yourself!

    Heard the wind chimes in the background and thought they were mine! Oh how I love them and great video! I’m in the midst of processing my own as well. Found some while fishing last year. Only just now getting to it during quarantine. Could’ve used that paint stirrer lol had to do all that by hand.

    I made something similar to your homemade sieve, but instead of duct tape I placed the screen onto an electric griddle and placed the bucket on top of it. The plactic gets fused into the mesh, and is not coming loose.

    i have an idea, you can take the clay you gather from wherever, and soak it in a very large amount of water, agitate the mix and let it settle, the clay particles will stay in the water much longer than sand and rocks will, when the undesirable material settles, you can remove the excess water with the clay still floating in it and distill the water out to get pure plastic clay from any dirt source

    Any of you guys ever heard of white clay?
    My father was a treasure hunter when he was still alive and one man came to him to consult what he found when he was manually digging for an artesian well.
    It was white clay.

    • @ladychunk2050
      @ladychunk2050 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry so late but white clay is called Kaolin clay. It's a lot of that in Georgia, S.Carolina and NC. It's used for many reasons some people even eat it.

    I have orange clay on/in my land and have started to follow your preparation routine,Q everyone accepts clay is sticky,but why is it ?? If I walk through the wet clay,I end up with 20lb boots,

    • @wildmudpottery
      @wildmudpottery  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Poppys Bench That just means that it is probably clay. After prep and drying it shouldn't be so sticky. You can always add some coarser fire clay or some fine sand to temper it but try it alone first.

    I dug up a lot of clay towards the end of summer. I have two garbage cans full of dry clay and a few 5 gallon buckets of wet processed clay. Now, the first bucket of clay (hole site #1) has a bad stench, very similar to sewage. I know that this is impossible because I dug the clay out in the middle of prairie hills. The 2nd site is mostly grey clay. I thought that it might be gleysols but I'm not sure. The grey clay is very plastic. The 3rd site is mostly a red iron oxide color and very gritty.

    Hello, I hope you can help me with a dilema I have. I retrieved some clay that was dug by the city in the street about 15 feet deep. It is gray clay and seemed very pure. At my first attempt at sculping, I made a very nice piece, but now know from watching your video that I should have screened the clay. How do I fire the piece without risking breakage now that it most likely contains small rocks and other organnic material? Also, can you tell me what happens to pieces made with clay that has dirt mixed in and how can you separate the dirt from the clay? Thank you very much.

    • @ClayKidpjc
      @ClayKidpjc 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bout a year late but if you naturally put fire the piece with wood as a fuel source, I can't guarantee it will be a success but it has a higher chance to make it out in that type of firing

    • @drakekoefoed1642
      @drakekoefoed1642 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      organic matter is the reason for the stagnant pond smell. you might run it through a fine screen before letting it sit. no need to seal it, i don't think. you are going to be pouring off water until it gets to be just clay with the needed water content

      You can use a stick or a paddle to mix the clay. It will take longer but it will work just the same. If you are mixing by hand pulverizing the clay more before adding water will help.Try putting the dry clay in a pillowcase or similar cloth bag and beat it with a stick.
