    I've never interpreted the song in the same way as you. There's something tragic when the father hugs his child and wants to protect it from the plane crash so much that it suffocates and dies in the father's arms

  • @Tiisiphone
    @Tiisiphone 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    The Dalai Lama is afraid of flying, it's a major phobia for him.
    This plane however never crashed. Unfortunately, the father was so terrified for his kid's safety that he could't control his fear of losing him, and smothered him accidentally instead of protecting him.
    "Fear is the mind-killer that leads to total obliteration." (Litany against fear, Frank Herbert's Dune)
    To answer your question about god, way to many horrors happened and still happening in our world for me to really believe in a kind, compassionate entity.

    Top 3 Rammstein song ever. Beautiful and ironic.
    Song is derived from a poet named Goethe and his poem Der Erlkonig. The king of Elves.

      Actually, they did play Dalai Lama a few times live on the Reise Reise tour. There is even a bootleg recording of it on YT. But the song was dropped from the setlist, together with Amour because the crowds were not enthusiastic over them. Very sad because it is one of my favorites. I really hope Rammstein will play Dalai Lama and Rosenrot again live on the 2024 tour.

    Hello D.
    Great reaction. One of my favorite songs. As the other already wrote, it's in part from a poem by Johann Wolfgang v. Goethe. Born in my hometown Frankfurt.
    Now imo the song is about fear and when fear becomes so overwhelming you don't realize you hurting your love one's.
    I always listen to it, when I fly.🤭🤭🤭
    Did you react to "Adios" yet? Another great underrated song by Rammstein.

      Who's riding so late where winds blow wild?
      It is the father grasping his child;
      He holds the boy embraced in his arm,
      He clasps him snugly, he keeps him warm.
      "My son, why cover your face in such fear?"
      "You see the elf-king, father? He's near!
      The king of the elves with crown and train!"
      "My son, the mist is on the plain."
      'Sweet lad, o come and join me, do!
      Such pretty games I will play with you;
      On the shore gay flowers their color unfold,
      My mother has many garments of gold.'
      "My father, my father, and can you not hear
      The promise the elf-king breathes in my ear?"
      "Be calm, stay calm, my child, lie low:
      In withered leaves the night-winds blow."
      'Will you, sweet lad, come along with me?
      My daughters shall care for you tenderly;
      In the night my daughters their revelry keep,
      They'll rock you and dance you and sing you to sleep.'
      "My father, my father, o can you not trace
      The elf-king's daughters in that gloomy place?"
      "My son, my son, I see it clear
      How grey the ancient willows appear."
      'I love you, your comeliness charms me, my boy!
      And if you're not willing, my force I'll employ.'
      "Now father, now father, he's seizing my arm.
      Elf-king has done me a cruel harm."
      The father shudders, his ride is wild,
      In his arms he's holding the groaning child,
      Reaches the court with toil and dread. -
      The child he held in his arms was dead.

    The album this song is off, Reise Reise, uses a black box flight recorder for its cover art. Also if you rewind the CD into the negative at the start on some releases, there is a real black box flight recording from a plane crash in Japan. Ofcourse, that feature isn't on the Japan release. Some releases just have it at the start of the album anyway, without it being hidden

    "Some of the Tills lyrics are inspired by classical German literature. Poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe." Goethe's famous ballad Erlkönig, for ex. translated:
    Who rides so late through the night and the wind?
    It is the father with his child.
    He holds the boy safely in his arms;
    he holds him tight, he keeps him warm.
    In Goethe's poem, a ghostly apparition, the King of the Elves, whispers seductively to the child and seeks to abduct him into his realm. At the end of the ballad, the son dies in the arms of his father on horseback.
    In the song "Dalai Lama" the"King of the Winds" aims to claim the boy,who finally dies in his father's arms, held too tightly in anticipation of an airplane crash.

    This song is based on a poem by J.W.Goethe. In 1782, of course, there were still no airplanes. Here is the old original:
    Erlkönig - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (english translation):
    ho's riding so late where winds blow wild
    It is the father grasping his child;
    Such pretty games I will play with you;
    On the shore gay flowers their color unfold,
    My mother has many garments of gold.'
    "My father, my father, and can you not hear
    The promise the elf-king breathes in my ear?"
    "Be calm, stay calm, my child, lie low:
    In withered leaves the night-winds blow."
    'Will you, sweet lad, come along with me?
    My daughters shall care for you tenderly;
    The child he held in his arms was dead.

      don't forget Heinz Erhardts variant (roughly translated)
      Who rides so late through wind and night
      It is the father, it's nearly eight.
      In his arms the child's well hold,
      He holds it well, it has a cold.
      Half three, half five, it's getting light,
      Still fast it is the father rides,
      Finally reaches the farmstead ---
      The boy, he lives, the horse is dead.

    The last verse is missing in the video. They say that the plane lands safely and the father is totally destroyed because he killed his child.
    The song is so messed up, it's unbelievable.
    The hint comes right at the beginning. The angels call ONLY the human child to them. But as a listener, you think the machine is going to crash and everyone is going to die. Everyone on board panics and the father, who wants to protect his child with his arms, squeezes too hard and suffocates his child. In the end, however, the plane lands safely.

    In Flake's book 'Der Tastenficker' pages 18-25 he tells of his own fear of flying and how he takes a piece of wreckage with him on flights as statistically, it is almost impossible for a piece of a plane to crash twice, so it gave him some reassurance.

      He did it, but does not do it anymore since a while, because he had troubles with it. He also writes there, that they were going home from a concert they gave in Mexico, as they got into a storm. A flash stroke and the light of the plane went black for a while. Till was just writing some lyrics. He also mentioned that Till took Flakes hand to calm him down.

    This song is a guide from the German poem “Erlkönig”(Alder-King) written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1782.
    The Alder-King
    Who rides so late through night and wind?
    It's the father with his child;
    He has the young lad safe in his arm,
    He holds him tightly, he keeps him warm
    "My son, why do you hide your face, so frightened?"-
    "Don't you see, father, the Alder-King?
    The Alder-King with his crown and tail?"-
    "My son, it's a wisp of fog."
    "You sweet child, come, go with me!
    Such beautiful games I'll play with you;
    There are lots of beautiful flowers on the shore;
    My mother has many golden clothes"-
    "My father, my father, and don't you hear,
    What the Alder-King promises me softly?"-
    "Hush now, stay quiet, my child;
    The wind is whispering in dry leaves."-
    "Do you want, fine lad, to go with me?
    My daughters shall wait on you, hand and foot;
    My daughters lead the nightly dance,
    And they'll show you how to sway and dance and sing."-
    "My father, my father, and don't you see
    Alder-King's daughters in that dark place?"-
    "My son, my son, I see it clearly:
    The old willows shimmer so gray.-"
    "I love you, your beautiful shape tantalizes me;
    And if you are not willing, I'm going to use force."-
    "My father, my father, now he's grabbing me!
    Alder-King hurt me!"-
    The father is filled with horror, he rides quickly
    He holds the groaning child in his arm,
    He just barely reaches the homestead
    The child was dead in his arms.
