- Happy 97th birthday, dearest Maestro Herbert Blomstedt! 💐🎉🎵
On July 11, 2024, Herbert Blomstedt celebrated his 97th birthday.
A little bird told the @BambergerSymphoniker that he loves and appreciates the Swedish summer psalm "I denna ljuva sommartid". ☺️ So they played it for him as a birthday serenade in St. Florian. 🎶
It was an immense honor and pleasure to have spent this special day together for the filming of that same evening's concert with Bruckner's Ninth in St Florian, which will be broadcast on September 8th on Arte to celebrate Anton Bruckner's 200th birthday on September 4, 2024!
A double birthday, so to speak!

Wow, look at his eyes, he is 110% in the moment. I can't imagine the musical acumen he has built up after nearly a century on earth.
Happy birthday wishes to Herbert, from another Herbert. Blomstedt is one of the finest conductors of our time, and it is great to hear the birthday serenade delivered by the wonderful and perennially underrated Bamberger - a fitting tribute and thank you.
I learned Sibelius and Nielsen symphonies from Blomstedt's recordings. Such a great conductor.
I vividly remember attending the maestro's concert in London back in the 1990s when he conducted Beethoven's 7th and Brahms violin concerto with Kyung Wha Chung as the soloist. He was already in his 60s then but looked much younger. I hope he will continue his thriving career well into his 100s!

Ein anderer Aspekt: Wie ein Komponist in 180 Sekunden wirklich alles ausdrücken kann, die gesamte Welt umschlingen kann, ist absolut außergewöhnlich und sehr selten. Eine ganz wunderbare Komposition. Der Maestro hat eben Geschmack :)

Herbert Blomstedt is a truly great conductor with an equally great heart. Personally, I think his interpretation of the Missa Solemnis with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2012 is unrivalled. ❤🎶👏🏻

One of the greatest. When I read that Sir Georg said, when he conducted the SF Symphony, ..."he must be a great orchestra builder", I knew Blomstedt was one of the ones. When, in a moment of anonymity, I listened to a Nielsen symphony, as I was driving through middle America, and I recognized it to be an interpretation to be worthy of distinction, and I discovered it was Mr. Blomstedt conducting, I knew he was worthy..

Zwar war mir als Musiklehrerin der Name Herbert Blomstedt ein Begriff gewesen, aber erst dank dieses zu Herzen gehenden Videos, das mir der Algorithmus von TH-cam zuspielte, näherte ich mich endlich diesem wunderbaren Menschen. Die Liebe und Hingabe in den Gesichtern während des Ständchens, aber auch seine Mimik, seine hübsche Erscheinung, berührten mich zutiefst. Keine Frage, dass ich mir seitdem fast alle seine Live-Videos angeschaut habe. Und da ich nicht genug bekommen kann, habe ich mir seine Biografie von Ursula Weigert als Genusslektüre gekauft sowie eine DVD namens "When music resounds, the soul is spoken to". Ein Buch mit Interviews ist unterwegs. Im Dezember will ich eines seiner Konzerte in Berlin besuchen.
Was mich auch immer sehr berührt, ist sein Lächeln und mitunter auch sein Strahlen, während die Musik ertönt, ebenso wie die Mienen der Orchestermusiker. Das verstärkt mein reines Musikerlebnis noch.
Herbert Blomstedt macht die Welt zu einem besseren Ort. Ich danke dem Universum dafür, dass es Sie gibt, lieber Herr Blomstedt.

He is magnificent, the symphonies he conducts bring an extraordinary comfort, serenity and power from the musicians, and so does this. Absolutely beautiful and touching! Just curious what did Mr Blomstedt say in the end? :)
He said that every student in Swedish schools knows this psalm, which is being played at the final celebration of the end of the school term. Singing this psalm meant a summer vacation of three months, which was a delight for the students. Enjoying the sun was very important in Sweden. Blomstedt, thanking the orchestra, said they could not have chosen a better song (for his birthday)

A few years ago I saw this top conductor conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Franz Schubert's eighth symphony and Anton Bruckner's 4th symphony "Romantic" in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. It was, thanks to this great, honest conductor, an unforgettable concert of pure highlights. Happy birthday!!

Yes. He said it was the piece of music that was played at the end of each term when he was in school. Listening to it meant three months of summer holidays after that, a great joy for everyone. The sun up north is so rare that the summer months are really precious. The orchestra couldn't have chosen a better piece for him.
