Vince gave him the opportunity, Austin took it and made history. Here we are two decades after the Attitude era, still reliving it, we probably won't see anything like it again in our lifetimes.
Austin had some of the best promo's of his career in late 96. He was so highly entertaining & believable. The story of Wrestling cannot be told without the birth of Stone Cold Steve Austin
And his promos came at the right time, too. I was a freshman in high school and that King Of The Ring promo had us all talking. It spoke to a generation.
@@actionjackson4982 We were Hulk's generation during the 80s. When all the millions of Hulkamaniacs got older and outgrew the cartoon gimmicks and stale hero/villain storylines, Austin was right there for us. As far as pro wrestling fans, we were an extraordinarily fortunate generation, definitely.
100% agree. He was so driven to succeed during that period and everything he did, from ring work to character work to promos, was on point. He absolutely embodied the character and because of that everyone bought into the gimmick and backed him. Austin says it all the time on his podcast: you have to believe in what you're doing or the audience won't care about you.
@@zamplify definitely it isn’t always just flips and acrobats that make you a good wrestler in the ring. It’s also the selling, story telling, and how your experience in ring changes the match. Definitely agree!
That injury Austin suffered had a big part in creating that straight at you Stone Cold style. He was a great worker before that but the style he adopted after the injury fit the character like a glove.
Every single thing Bret did looked believable. Punches, kicks, high flying moves, taking bumps, selling, he made it looked like an art. Everything was so crisp, and he didn't need to constantly throw himself off the top ropes and outside of the ring to get a reaction. His ring psychology was second to none
Brother man, you are a LEGEND! This work is the best of its kind anywhere, and you really do put a lot of work into these things. Much love and respect from across the pond

I also want to say his technical skills were very underrated until the injury he suffered in Summerslam 97 where he had to change his style. He would do it from time to time.

This is really cool to see the development of the stone cold character. Stone cold is my favorite wrestler of all time and I only started watching wrestling in 1998. I didn’t get to see the early years of the stone cold character, only from watching old videos and stuff like that. Also the goon slipping on the cake icing had me in tears lmao.
Wow. Never noticed that only one of Bret Hart's eyes moved in that shot when he's playing with the cat. Watch when he looks down at it right at the end. Poor man's brain really was a ticking time-bomb.
Stone Cold was an underrated grappler before the neck break by Owen Hart. He still managed but he wasn't the same after that If you say Stone Cold was a technical wrestler people won't believe it. His *"Glass Shatters"* theme by *Disturbed* should've stuck.
Poor TL Hopper, the man learns a trade of value and gets made fun of because He's willing to the jobs others won't.. Not because he wants too, but because it's his duty as an American, nay, a member of the human race.. For that we salute you Mister Hopper!
Considering that Tony Anthony was formerly a top tier star in the Tennessee territory, I have to hope the WWF at least gave him a good paycheck for portraying that gimmick.

I’m a bit younger than the typical attitude era audience but I always heard about “Pillmans got a gun.” It really doesn’t seem as crazy as some of the things I was subjected to in the early to mid 2000s
Austin was actually pretty technical especially back then and was really good at selling especially getting punched in the face . Great video. I subbed to your channel a few weeks ago. Your my favorite wrestling TH-camr especially with reliving these back in the day moments 😊
Can he cut a promo or can he? I mean the guy can talk better than just about anybody ever. Mix in his advanced wrestling skills and he was a star just waiting to be born.
I feel like the Pillman 9mm angle was executed as well as it could have been for a wrestling show. If you're going to do an angle with a live gun being aimed at someone, you can't do it in the ring. Stone Cold in 1996 was just psychotic enough that you could buy him actually breaking and entering during a TV interview. And if you could buy that, it's perfectly logical that a laid up Pillman is prepared to defend himself and his family, in his own home. It crossed a few lines that maybe shouldn't have been crossed in 1996, but it was good character development for both Pillman and Austin. The only downside is that it was a harbinger of the next few years, where character development and storyline advancement would more frequently happen outside of the ring, rather than in traditional wrestling matches; in retrospect, I believe that soap-opera style of booking did more harm than good, in the long term.
Austin was so underrated as a pure wrestler, if not forr Austin WCW keeps winning until they implode , Austin of course is by far the biggest wrestling star ever, Hogan was hot for longer but Austin was hot for 5 years that no one will ever match, ever. i wish i was watching some wwe in 96' but didn't start watching until the build to to the Royal Rumble 98 late 97.
Stone Cold debuts against an already established (somewhat, at least) Matt Hardy. Stone Cold has his ENTIRE historical WWE career. Stone Cold retires. Nearly 20 years passes. Matt Hardy is still going strong and more relevant than ever.
Stone cold returned in Wrestlemania 38 to face Kevin Owens to sealed his legacy. When a wrestler is aging and realizing that his/her momentum is heading towards a slow pace, it's better for them to hang the boots for good so that their legacy is not tarnished. That's what Austin did. That was for his best interest.
Wow listening to the side remarks that are spoken about from Lawler would get him thrown off tv today which is a shame cause it was part of the kings gimmick. The perfect gift for Sable would have been Some Wrestling Talent.

One of the more lowkey things you pick up from this series is that Savio Vega was quite good at wrestling. Not spectacular but more than serviceable for the time.
The change of boots from the long white boots to the short black boots is a bit of a tribute to Mike Tyson, who had the black shorts, short boots and no socks

This obviously worked perfectly and was executed so well at WM 13 in the greatest match in pro wrestling history along side Taker/Micheals at WM 25 and Hogan/Rock at WM 18.. Steve basically owes his entire WWE run to Bret Hart.. Even more so after Bret left because Bret basically created the Mr. McMahon character which set Stone Cold up to have the greatest fued in pro wrestling history.. People wonder why Bret has never been able to keep go if Montreal and I think part of that is because he could have had a similar feud with Vince after that.. Montreal was not a work but after it happened Bret and Vince should have taken a second to realize the opportunity they had and Bret should have seen the lightning in a bottle he had instead of punching Vince and leaving..
