It is funny how when Austin did the Monday Nqyuill skit, when he mentioned Geritol on a pole, Hogan was 42, which is the same age as Damien Priest is now, with Punk being 46. Crazy how views on wrestlers' ages has changed in 30 years
I like how Austin, in his older years, gained perspective on his WCW firing. Even though he was a good hand and a decent promo, what really made him stand out from the roster of the WCW roster and what was so Stunning about Steve Austin? It's something he said he couldn't answer, so while it may have sucked and hindsight being 20/20 shows he would be a star, I kind of understand the logic in letting Austin go. ECW would be a haven for folks to reinvent themselves or figure things out. Austin, Foley, Al Snow, even Matt Bourne post Doink, all did pretty great work in ECW and Austin is the biggest benefactor of his time in Philadelphia.
In fairness, his old finisher was the Stun Gun. The Stunner name was almost certainly a callback to his old name. And also taken, fittingly, from his time in ECW and the guy he wrestled the most - Mikey Whipwreck, which he called the "Whippersnapper."
The tone shifts between him being light, even a bit jokey to him just dead staring you down through the camera with ice blue eyes...it's honestly great stuff. It really sold him as a dangerous guy, a legit snake that could be cool with you one second then take you out the next and you never knowing if it was something you did or if he was planning to the whole time.
I love the part where he says I'm going to be the superstar I always knew I could be. And nobody in ECW is going to stop me. ECW 95 got me back into wrestling.
When WCW made it to Denmark in early 1994, two heels stood out to me - 'Lord' Steven Regal and 'Stunning' Steve Austin. I think Regal was at his peak in many ways at that time. I always thought it would have been the greatest rib, had they had people like the Steves reverting to their old WCW gimmicks as part of the invasion storyline. Imagine the fans if Austin had grown his hair out - or worn a hair piece. Nuclear heat, I tells ya.
Him being able to cut long form promos really helped, though imo some of his stuff from WWF was great too. Late '96 and '97 Stone Cold where he was running down Bret Hart was some fantastic stuff and even that pre-Mania 17 promo to hype up him vs Rock where he says how he "needs" to beat the Rock is great subtle stuff from him that imo harkens back a lot to his best ECW material. Austin is just a great talker and weirdly underrated if you think about people talking about best mic guys of all time. When he cuts loose, he can make you buy everything he's saying all while wondering if he's about to just attack the person he's talking to at any moment.
Steve Austin's short run in ECW in 1095 was awesome his impersonations of eric Bischoff and hulk hogan was absolutely hilarious his match against Mikey Whipwreck at ECW November to remember 1995 was great plus it was featured in WWE 2k16 Austin 3:16 showcase mode.
I glad you are covering this not a lot of people go in depth with his ECW run even WWE when covering his time in ECW. Always wondered if he stayed in ECW a bit longer he would have a better start in WWF then what Vince gave him.
Mostly been familiar with the infamous promo he did and the few skits while he was in ECW but good to know WB will always get the details in everything involving Austin's time there
Other things aside, Steve is one of the best sports entertainers to share his passion & talent in any promotion he was in. It's no coincidence he had one of the best "intro" promos in E.C.W. (R.I.P.) & in the wwf with the birth of Austin 3:16. Another example of how blind the people "running" wcw were. He & Chris Candito (R.I.P.) seemingly didn't know what to do with their hair in their early yrs, but Steve figured it out well. Steve's 1st phase of the SC character was his best- he didn't care about the fans, his peers in the company, or anyone liking him, & told everybody off during his promos. A true anti-hero. The look in his eyes when he was on fire was chilling.
There are still people in 2024 who come up with ridiculous _what-if-Stone-Cold-had-been-in-WCW_ "thought experiments"... "Stunning Steve Austin" went as far as he was ever going to go in WCW, no matter what he said in his ECW promos. His WWF success would have never happened in WCW. Because "Stone Cold Steve Austin" would have never happened without the genuine bitterness and anger over his firing from WCW. And WCW kicked the WWF's ass every week during Austin's initial rise as "Stone Cold" in '96, '97. Up until April 1998. What slowly turned the tide on the WWF side of the "Moday Night Wars", was the start of the Austin/McMahon feud after the "Royal Rumble 1998" in mid-January. Without Vince McMahon as the antagonist, you never ever get the best and most successful version of "Stone Cold". Try to name one other feud/storyline that Austin was involved with in his career, that can measure up to the McMahon feud in any way! Or don't - because there is none! Less than a month earlier, in late-December 1997, WCW made the "fast count" blunder in the main event of "Starrcade", that made Hogan, Sting, and Bret Hart all look stupid. Not a lot went right with WCW's booking after that and the WWF eventually took over for the majority of the last three quarters of 1998. WCW had one more strong phase in August/September '98 - and of course the Hogan vs. Goldberg match in the Georgia Dome on "Nitro", for one strong week in July. After that, they only won one more week in October - and that was it. They never beat the WWF again. "Starrcade 1997" was the beginning of the beginning of the end. So, WCW dominated during Austin's initial rise in the WWF. What would they have needed him for? What could "Stunning Steve" have possibly added to the nWo era? Austin's real, outstanding, exceptional, next-level success came inextricably linked in tandem with Vince McMahon in 1998. Stone Cold/Mr. McMahon was the magic formula, not Austin by himself. There is no "what if". Because there was no logical possibility of the "if". People can retcon-fantasy-book until they're blue in the face, they're never going to make the parts fit for a realistic whole.
Preach. The only mistake you made was the Austin/McMahon rivalry didn’t really start until the night after WrestleMania XIV. In January 1998 Austin did interrupt Tyson and McMahon in the ring but Vince didn’t begin trying to screw Austin until after WrestleMania. From September 1997 (when he first stuns Vince) until March 1998 Vince didn’t do anything against Steve Austin with two minor exceptions. First he tried to force Austin to defend the IC championship against Rock on Raw is War in December or forfeit it. Secondly is the final episode of Raw before WrestleMania when Austin is again forced to face Rock or else he would forfeit his WWF championship shot at WrestleMania. However in both these cases Vince doesn’t screw Austin or stack the deck unfairly against him. He simply forces him to face the Rock in singles matches. For all intents and purposes the Austin / McMahon rivalry began post-Mania when Vince, Brisco, Patterson and Slaughter became systematically trying to destroy Austin.
Many people say the "Stone Cold" character began in ECW, the blueprint for what Austin would become was shown to the world when Steve arrived in ECW, and his promos on ECW television have been given a ton of praise.
It's amazing how completely shaving his head and growing in the goatee jacked up his intimidation factor so much. Even during his Ringmaster debut he had a buzz cut and a shaven face... the magic just wasn't there.
Austin's delivery was already a good 90% of the way there on these ECW promos, especially the one targeted at Bischoff. "I'm a little bit better than that", and he was absolutely correct. Great video!

Watching early days Stone Cold Steve Austin circa 1996-97, or his Superstar Steve gimmick in ECW and contrasting that with modern Steve Austin is a sight to behold. You can tell how bitter and angry he was at getting canned from WCW, and he channeled al of that negative energy into his work and managed to turn it into main event talent. Going from a younger, bitter and jaded Steve who took the DTA motto to heart to the modern day, older and much calmer Steve who doesn’t seem to have any ambitions beyond podcasting, working his farm with his wife and drinking beer is in inspiration to us all imo.
In both real life and in kayfabe, it all makes sense. WCW lit a fire under a young man, made him jaded and angry, and he then spent over a decade taking it out on everyone who would or even could cross him or stop him. And once that fire burned out, he settled down and was able to, unlike after WCW, look back and actually have pride in what he accomplished.

Like everyone else, the October 10, 1995 promo absolutely floored me. Austin went from being a guy with potential to grade A star in a 10 minute span. Back in 1992, Paul Heyman said in an interview in the Pro Wrestling Torch that Steve Austin was a future franchise performer in wrestling and that no one could take that away from him. Three years later, Heyman himself launched that franchise character.
I saw Stone Cold wrestle HHH live at Mayhem In Manchester in April 1998 when I was 13. It was so awesome. It wasn't long after Austin had won the WWF title and the roof nearly blew off when his music hit.
Definitely. He wasn't going to do anything with Austin. I don't think you would have job them out, but he definitely wasn't seeing the title picture or main event feuds. The best he was going to let him do was probably another US run😂
I loved Stunning Steve Austin in WCW. Unpopular Opinion: I liked him better in WCW than I did in WWF. (But he had to go to the WWF to get to the hights he hot to careerwise, so I completely understand). Same with Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero.
You're actually wrong about noone wanting Stunning Steve MERCH..My uncle had him as top performer in WCW,and I was a fan of Hollywood Blondes'...I have a bunch of his items now. And they are all pretty good investments..💯
S'Funny, the more I watch Austin's promo segments from 1995 on, he could have started "what" whenever he wanted to. His pauses in his promos were THAT natural. Like when he spoke, you felt like you HAD to listen or something was wrong with you.
Really interesting look back on Austin. I thought u couldn't give us more than u already have on his ECW run. Great job as always WB from one of your weekly RTW soldiers.
ECW was firing off of all cylinders in 95. The bloody rivalry between Raven vs Dreamer was the feud of the year that included Cactus Jack turning heel in joining Ravens ever growing stable Ravens Nest. Mikey Whipwreck became the company's underdog ECW Champion that was constantly being contended by the Sandman, The Gangstas debuted, and they feuded with the Public Enemy in a bloody tag team feud. And then towards the end of the year for just 4 months you had Steve Austin debut where he lets loose on the company he worked for prior WCW, and we saw glimpses of his future character Stone Cold character. He immediately inserted himself in the ECW World Championship picture against The Sandman and Mikey Whipwreck. And though he never won the championship it did show off what a main eventing Steve Austin could look like. ECW in 95 was just an all around legendary year that only got even better in 96. While WCW and WWF in 95 were still trying and failing to capture the sucess they had in 80s instead of leaning into the contemporary era of the 90s. WCW would get it together in 96 but it would take the WWF another two years before they began that transition and took notes from ECW.
So tired of people saying "WCW were dumb to let Austin go!" They forget that the WWF debuted him as The Ringmaster. THEY didn't know how to market him either.

It's been years since I have seen these promos, and as much as Bischoff is my hero, I forgot how shockingly accurate Austin's impersonation was. Hahahaha. Eric did repeat himself A LOT in 1995 on Nitro, though he did tone it down a little bit going into 1996. WCW For Life.
Miss these deep dives from bios, I would be interested in seeing a Mcmemphis video. It’s something I didn’t get to see as it happened. Being in Philly we didn’t get uswa until 96
I guess I understand why Eric fired Austin at that point. But, firing someone from a 300k per year job deserves a face to face meeting. But, Eric had to be kicking himself after Austin became the biggest star of his era, maybe ever.
I literally just watched the”the legacy of stone cold Steve Austin” and for bein 3 dvds long , I think your video did a better job covering this chapter than the WWE did.
Cutting a promo saying you’re better than everyone in ecw I bet hit a little different with the boys when he turned into Stone Cold Steve Austin and made it 10000% true. 😂
One thing I’ll always appreacite about Paul Heyman was that he took his former client (Steve Austin) into his company when WCW failed to see his talent. And even though the pay was lousy, his brief time in ECW served as a catalyst for the Stone Cold character he’d become in WWF despite Vince’s failed efforts to reset him with that Ringmaster gimmick.
lol..I saw the thumbnail and thought “eh that’s kind of interesting maybe I’ll check it out…oh wait WrestlingBios made the video?? *tap*”. Love the humor and great narration from this channel, could watch a video about Brutus Beefcake if he made it haha
I always try to give people like Bischoff a tiny bit of a break when talking about someone not being a draw. It is like when Cornett said Hunter Hearst Helmsley would never draw. He was right Triple H was a draw but Hunter Hearst Helmsley never would have been. This is the same with Stunning Steve, Mean Mark and so fourth. However Bischoff and so fourth need to realise that they were also in charge of these "characters" it is up to them to get the best out of people so i can't give them too much of a break.
I remember watching "Superstar" Steve Austin in ECW when this happened. The long promo was one of the greatest promos ever if you ask me. His time in ECW was great even tho it was brief.
Nope. That was his second-to-last match. He had one more against Eddie Jackie on "WCW Main Event". 21 May 1995, Bayfront Center, St. Petersburg, Florida. Second match on the show. Meng beat Brian Pillman in what was technically the "main event". The show itself was just the free show/pre-show that led into the "Slamboree 1995" PPV. Hogan/Savage vs. Flair/Vader was the main event of the pay-per-view. Four days later, Austin was tagging with Arn Anderson in New Japan.
Austin was a true star! He worked his way up to the top without having any opportunities handed to him. Unlike Roman Reigns, where WWE consistently pushed him down our throats. And gotten opportunities handed to him due to his famous family. But Roman doesn't have wrestling abilities like Austin or mic skills. Paul Heyman had to be Roman's manager because he couldn't cut decent promos
This was pretty cool. Though it's interesting seeing him get on there and constantly talk about the competition on TV like that. Kinda reminds me of that criticism AEW was getting for a while there mentioning WWE all the time. It's a shame he didn't have too many matches there and mostly cut the promos cause it'd be awesome to see who all he could've worked with as champ if that plan continued.

He'd somehow do the job for Hogan, brother!
He basically was starting the stone cold gimmick in ECW. It just wasn’t named that yet.
Yeah his name is sandman
Basically the sandman
@@Juugrichkory Sandman: Ah yes we are many my friend, many...
Ray: Oh guys, I think the answer's sitting across the street...
Special effects!
Weeee!
You bring that jam to whole new level, im delighted extraordinaire.
Well done!
Austin in WCW was basically Benoit/Eddie/Y2j/Booker in 98 to 99.
Definitely. He wasn't going to do anything with Austin. I don't think you would have job them out, but he definitely wasn't seeing the title picture or main event feuds. The best he was going to let him do was probably another US run😂
Monday Niquill was one of my favourite skits 😂
Bongo!
So glad how things turned out for him. Austin is the goat 🐐 IMO
Its crazy how he’s your GOAT but just imagine if he never got that neck injury. He would be THE GOAT. He was a great performer.
"And that's the bottom line 'cause Stone Cold said so".
That's Hulk Cold Steve Austin, GIVE ME A HELL YEAH, BROTHER!
I bet Jeff Jarret felt salty as hell when austin became a huge star and all Jeff sustained was mid card status his whole career..wcw also..
Double J was a main eventer in WCW. Part of the reason the company went down the toilet
@@NoneofYabiz-rx3zi Double J did not even need help from T.L. Hopper for that.
@@roccojamison89gooker51 .😂😂
great video wrestling bios and thanks to you i decided to watch one of those matches.Steve Austins time in ecw may have been short but very sweet
Awesome video, love to see this fully fleshed out.
WWE took Psycho Sid’s look and Sandman’s persona to create Stone Cold. SCSA pulled it out off masterfully
They should bring that TV title back
Excellent video Bios
The Dusty and Flair accents 😂😂😂
I remember downloading that 14:46 Austin promo via Napster. Took about a day to get it, but boy was it worth it. Thanks, WB! You're the man, BROTHER!
Love this stuff. Hadn’t been this early. Never had this many “tapes” as a kid. Thanks for the time.
@@ahmedf8965 Yep look at what they did with Undertaker’s little brother made him an Dentist then an diesel ripoff hell I didn’t know what to do with this guy I created his name is Hannibal he was billed as The Younger Brother of The Undertaker and Kane but that didn’t work so I decided to dress him in an suit naming him Mr Hannibal since he’s in a stable with a guy who well the backstory is he’s an Corporate guy that acts like a pirate yes his name is Corpirate
Hard to believe WWF saw this and made him the Ringmaster 🤣
😂 right? they made him silent and had dibiase talk for him? real dumb
1000th like! I hit the like button as soon as your videos start. Cause I know it's always gonna be a banger! Especially if it's about Stone Cold lol
Man you can hear some of Superstar Austin in MJF's promos.
Sadly mjf never evolved and now is a has been
Great video on a fascinating time in Austin’s career.
I hope after reliving the war ends that he covers all of ECW
Watching those ecw promos blew my mind thank-you for showcasing this
lol..I saw the thumbnail and thought “eh that’s kind of interesting maybe I’ll check it out…oh wait WrestlingBios made the video?? *tap*”. Love the humor and great narration from this channel, could watch a video about Brutus Beefcake if he made it haha
hey hey hey, i hope that was a heel promo, cause nobody and i mean nobody disrespects Alex Wright
Lol I immediately thought the same
Oh, big bratwurst
Stone cold is the best CTE denier there was
I always try to give people like Bischoff a tiny bit of a break when talking about someone not being a draw.
SCSA became unburdened by what had been in WCW.
For me, the Brian Pillman home invasion was the first step in Stone Cold being a made man. After WM13 it was a wrap.
Is it fair to say, since this is what led from Stunning Steve Austin to Stone Cold Steve Austin ... that this is Lukewarm and Stunned Steve Austin?
Steve Austin talking trash about Alex Wright...Stone Cold or not, that's just inexcusable.
Great video, reminds me of why i and so many people where drawn too Austin, his brutal honesty.
Great video!
great vidya on the birth of the goat
14:22 the best promo of Steve’s career in my opinion
Bro, what a great video
If I'm not mistaken, Steve Austin's last in WCW was against Macho Man Randy Savage.
Somewhere Kevin Nash was watching the Monday NyQuil saying look at the adjective Play Im not here to play 😅
Steve Austin in ecw sounds like stone cold et 😆
What's the background music at around 5:50?
Austin was a true star! He worked his way up to the top without having any opportunities handed to him. Unlike Roman Reigns, where WWE consistently pushed him down our throats. And gotten opportunities handed to him due to his famous family. But Roman doesn't have wrestling abilities like Austin or mic skills. Paul Heyman had to be Roman's manager because he couldn't cut decent promos
And that’s the bottom line because the Ring Master said so!
More ECW please
It's crazy how much you can see 1997-98 SCSA in that ECW in-ring.
