  • The Sicilian Dragon is often a race with both sides pursuing attacks on the enemy king. Here Black goes in for an unorthodox knight maneuver (...Nf6-d7-e5), and I react with prophylaxis (12.b3) followed by pure aggression (13.h4 and 14.g4)!

    In this game we see John playing very tatically something that is unusual on him; he is more a positional player. Glad to see both styles.

    I hope to play against you soon, John. I'm not a very strong player (around 2000 in lichess), but I'd like to know how far I am from an IM. Your videos are great, you give us highly valuable advices about how to improve our chess. Thank you sou much, Jonh. Greetings from México.

    Similar to a fisher game, except I don't see a clear fisher tactic here in the beginning because of the move order, I wonder what a computer would come with.

  • @fisher00769
    @fisher00769 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    At move 21, my first instinct was Qg1. Just line up the Queen with the black King. And then 21...Qxc3 22. gxf7+ is double check so black has to take with the king. 22... Kxf7 23. Rf1+ is good enough. Ke8 gets mated in a couple of moves after Rxf8+. Ke7 gets mated in a few after Qg5+. Black has to find 23...Bf5 and then 24. Rh7+ and the onslaught continues. Because of the queen on the g file suddenly the black king is trapped on a minefield. One misstep and he's dead. My engine found some mate in 20s and whatnot in this poistion and of course I didn't calculate that but it's just obvious that black is getting killed here sooner or later. Someone as experienced as you would immediately judge that "Well, that has to be winning" even without seeing all the variations. Like there are all 3 white heavies lined up against a defenseless king with plenty of good entry points and angles to attack and even assistance from the white bishop, there is just no chance for survival in a position like that.
    Computer also likes Qg1, it can't quite decide between that and Qd2 and Qe3. From a practical point of view though, with the amount of time you had, Qd2 and Qe3 are probably better because they have easier lines to calculate.
    Really instructive and nice game, John. Cheers!

    John, I'm sorry if I make a silly question, but I've started playing chess two weeks ago and since then I have been binge watching all of your videos.
    I saw that for beginners you said that it would be ideal in the opening not to get the knight in front of the c2 pawn, are there cases where this is wrong?
    For example, let's take 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3
    Would black be better playing Nc6 or d6?
    Thanks!

    John, I just started using the chess.com tactics trainer and I am making lots of mistakes before I eventually find the right move. I'd like to know if there is a tactics trainer out there that will tell me the reason that the right move is the right move.

    • @GreenTornado
      @GreenTornado 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly, I haven't come across a website that does that, but you can use the fantastic Chess Mentor on chess.com. That tells you why the move you choose is correct or wrong.

  • @antonsebastian6484

    hi I'm 1368 uscf but my tactics are 1800+ I'm not sure how to improve I was stuck around this rating range for a while on lichess I'm 1910 blitz and 1380 blitz on chess.com. I was working on my opening this summer

    • @GreenTornado
      @GreenTornado 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a Diamond membership on chess.com, you should make use of its tremendous tools. I use Chess Mentor, and it has boosted my chess.com rating by at least four hundred points. Before I became a Diamond member, I was probably a 1100 (or even below) rated player on the site. Now, I am playing with the 1600 and 1700 rated players.
      All I can say is that you should mainly work on the endgame, and middlegame (tactics and strategy), but leave out the opening until you reach around the 1800 rated mark (preferably the expert level (2000)). The reason for that is because most people under 1800 go out of "book" within the first five moves, so learning the theory and the move order if you are under 1800 is useless at this moment in time. Well, it's not useless, but why spend your time on something that probably won't be needed because players keep going out of "book"? Devote your time and energy to tactics, strategy, and the endgame. However, just learn the basics of the opening (such as: control the centre, castle as soon as possible, develop your pieces to good squares, and so on), and you should have played the opening well enough without learning all that dull and long theory.

    Hey John, I have a question if you would be kind enough to answer. I play the QGD exchange variation with Nge2. Is this played a lot at the GM level? I know the QGD isn't very popular at the top level but when it is played does white generally play the exchange with Nge2? If not why? What is wrong with it? Thanks a lot, this was a burning question of mine. Cheers!

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Leonardo! Yes, the Exchange QGD with Nge2 is very dangerous to Black. Check the games of Botvinnik and Kasparov; they excelled on the White side of this setup.
