Such a good review! I haven't read any Kate Morton, either. I love it when it book really surprises me. I've read some books where it starts slow and you wonder what's going on, and then it all gets tied together, and you end up loving it! I'll have to put this on my TBR.

I read the Forgotten Garden and enjoyed it a lot. Now I have all her books and plan to read them all in the future.

Great review!!! I want this in my collection so bad lol. I haven't read amything by her yet, but I have 3 of her other novels on my shelves. I've heard that The Lake house was a good one as well. Happy Reading...

Great review! The Clockmaker's Daughter is my absolute favorite of her's. For years, it had been The Forgotten Garden. I love all her work, but didn't think any of her stories could dethrone Forgotten Garden. For me, The Clockmaker's Daughter is absolute perfection; a masterclass in storytelling (IMHO, of course). I've read the physical book and am now listening to the audiobook (which has made me love the story even more, Joanne Froggatt narrates the story beautifully) for the second time. If you want to continue reading Kate's work after The Forgotten Garden, my next favorite is The Distant Hours. And you're so right about the pacing of her novels. They're not meant to be edge-of-your-seat, breakneck page-turners; they're meant to be eased into, allowing the reader to luxuriate in the world she's conjured. Thanks again for sharing your review. Would love to know your thoughts on her other work.

Thank you! I’m glad you like her work so much! I definitely plan on reading more from her. I haven’t gotten around to it yet since it’s not the mood I’ve been in lately but I’m sure I’ll like other stuff by her.

Awesome review, Carol! I've heard this book is really great, I'm glad you enjoyed it too! I usually don't read historical-type books, but this one sounds very interesting. I may pick it up!

Thanks for your review - fantastic as always. I found your review interesting as I tried to read this book as soon as it came out. I have read all of her others books, and have enjoyed them all (some more than others). I just couldn't get onboard with this one. I thought there were too many viewpoints for my liking, and when it boiled down to it, I just didn't care about the mystery. Maybe I will pick it up another time (I'd like to think I could finish it as it was a birthday present from my husband), but maybe one day.

I can see how it’s too many characters. It took me quite awhile to and to keep everyone straight. The fact that it was a slow burn book didn’t help but I kept hearing people praise it and say to push through so I did. Hopefully you’ll have better luck if you try again!

I love this book but, I don’t know why, there is something that makes me SO SAD it’s hard for me to keep reading. Does anyone else agree? Why do you think is that about?

    • @CarolMarieReads

I think crimes/mysteries, especially when unsolved, are sad! The mystery may not even be a murder, just a missing person leaving people with no answers can get depressing.

I am so sad about the injustice of it all! That "Lily" succumbed to her fate because Lucy somehow fell and got knocked out for DAYS and JUST FORGOT EVERYTHING?!
