Amanda is a gem to the FFXIV songs! This is a very unique song for a "boss fight" in FFXIV so it was a nice mix up. But I loved the song.

What makes this song jarring is context in game. You are fighting a boss... who's inadvertently helping destroy the world. And both her personality and the music are so upbeat and cheerful. It's not a fight to her, you're playing.

So the title of the track is itself a reference, because it's a line from Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream. The familiars she summons, Mustardseed, Peaseblossom, and Puck, are also servants of Titania from said play.
The live version is performed by Amanda Achen, who sings Tomorrow and Tomorrow, and the pianist Keiko.

This is such a weird one and I love that FFXIV has room for this kind of thing.
Titania is the king of the fairies, so you are right about the nature connection. and these fairies are proper creepy, presented in all their childlike wonder, fickle playfulness, and terrifying apathy for the lives of mortals.
I always felt like this song captures it perfectly.

    • @dra6o0n

They're pretty accurate to classical depictions of fairies, before they were disneyfied:
Selfish pranksters with no concept of good or bad, and no care for other's lives.

Fairies... The mix between the childhood innocence and the immortals boredom.
In my mind, they perfectly understand cycle of life and nature, and that's why, they can't understand their pranks are so dangerous most of time. Fight against boredom, not able to understand what's wrong with their actions because... You see... It's fun ! ^^

I was so confused when you heard the original version and the title said something else, but oh lord, to have the difference right there was amazing! Especially for the live version I forgot that Amanda has such a lower register than the original which is very charming in its own way. And of course Keiko on the piano is just *chef's kiss*. Iirc Amanda did get some hate from some fans after she took over Susan's place with the main themes - but I do hope it was just a small minority being too loud in the live stream chat when the Digital FanFest was happening. But yes, you heard her sing "Tomorrow and Tomorrow"!
And I am actually surprised that the Primals version didn't make it to this video because then you'll even get another completely different mood with this song xD

No, they were their own mythical race. However normal human taboos were, well, not taboos to them. And being such chaotic things, they were perfectly content with kidnapping kids they liked. Blond or red hair and green eyes being some of their favourite traits. Demanding firstborn kids, swapping human kids for fairy ones, murder could even just be viewed as a bit of fun depending on what you're dealing with. Or just the straight up murderous redcaps.
There are also a few like helper types like the brownies and Silkies. Which could trash your home if you do something wrong.
So the various actions you see the fae folk take in game are pretty accurate. "Oh I like this person. Let's keep them forever! Let's make them one of us!" Or rather terrifying murders of soldier.

I digged this track in the game because it fills me with such... unease?
This plays while fighting the king of the fairies Titania, and the fairies are all whimsical and will drive you to insanity just for fun, like trickster fairies of old mythos.
This melody, especially when the voices split in the chorus, to me feels like the music itself is trying to enthrall you and drown you in this confused stupor. Really interresting song.

FFXIV OST Facts - A *lot* of the songs are actually sung by the dev teams or amateur vocalists they find. Shiva's song was based on a recommendation of a co-worker after they heard a member of the dev team at karaoke. Cool Lore about this - The boss is actually the Fairy King. They are genderless magical beings and the reincarnated souls of children who had died at a young age. As a result they are playful / mischievous and a lot of their magic is based in nature / tricks (though they are dark, people who trespass on their lands are turned into bushes and cannot be cured). This was a fight against the corrupt Fairy King, her successor Feo Ul looks amazing if you get a chance to google their Fairy King form. A good scene (but spoiler filled for Shadowbringers) is a TH-cam video called "FFXIV - Feo Ul's Big Moment and the Fae Folk Fight Back". Great video, it's so cool you saw this song as an example of unique music / art!

I often load in to a group of people that have failed this Trial a few times and they're usually a bit upset and very annoyed at this song. Because the trial itself is not any more difficult than any other of it's expansion but this singing is very distracting, in the heat of the battle it can also feel like it's kinda laughing at mistakes made.
It's always satisfying to see players go from ''Wtf is this?'' to ''Shut up!!!'' but then ''fa la la la lala laaa... ring a ling a ling... lulla lulla lullabyyy!'' and finally ''Aww, it's over already?''. It happens almost every time in this particular Trial and it's kinda amazing to me, someone who knows nothing about music, how someone can write a song that makes a listener go from confusion to visceral hate to absolute love within minutes. That must be rare.

Il Mehg, the Kingdom of Fairies... once a kingdom of man that was lost, nature reclaimed it as did many of the fairy-type creatures that slowly crept into it. It is now a childlike paradise where those unfortunate enough to lost themselves into become the unwitting playthings of said fairies... in other words, they either lose themselves into the revelry... or not... either way, it never ends well for those unfortunate individuals, either turned into bushes, drowned in the lake or simply killed by whatever whim they come across.

This boss is Titania, King of the Faeries. The entire zone that culminates in this encounter is torn straight out of Gaelic mythology.
So those wings aren't part of the outfit, but it is a very nice dress.
The song is upbeat, cyclical, and uses an unusual time signature to embody the whimsical and eternal nature of the faeries. She just wants to keep you enthralled in her games for all eternity.

I don't want to give an unwanted lecture, but if you want some more context on the 'nature' influences, maybe look up Titania as a mythological entity, specifically from A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare. The FF version was simply based on the real life mythology, and it shows. It's well that you imagined a girl in a field, as it very much is a childish joy in nature that characterizes both versions of Titania.

This was such a weird boss theme, because you just want Titania to shut up so you could focus on whats musically going on and make sense of it (beyond "fa la la la la"). And yeah, its out nowhere and the fight is easy for the team to wipe on, meaning you'll hear it loop more.
Also for context, the fae folk in FFXIV are genderless, but the faries are depicted more feminine.
You still have one more version - The Primals version, with male vocals courtesy of GUNN of the band.

*Spoiler warning for those not in Shadowbringers content.*
To give some context on the fight. The boss is the Fairy King that has gone mad after 100 years of isolation and imprisonment in their own castle. They are also one of the Light wardens of this zone in which the player has to kill in order to restore order to the world.

I love this Song so much. Also it has so much Variation in the different arrangments. You have the Original Version then the more faster Fanfest Version and also the more electric Pulse Version of it. Also there is a really slow Cover from "Sharm" here on TH-cam. My Wife also sings it here and there as a Lullaby for our Newborn Baby which really fits perfect in the Lyrics.
But when i heared it the first time it was quite.....differend from all the other FF14 Songs back then that is true. But it fits perfect into the Fight and the Boss Story itself. Also the Voice color fits perfect into the Jesper esque Fairy's which love to play pranks on the other People.

Bahahaha! The juxtaposition of this song and fight. It represents the Fey folk very well, mischievous, playful, dangerous. The song is to invoke a childlike wander and to lure people into a false sense of security.
I’m thinking that this is Seelie Fey, not as dangerous as the Unseelie but not to be messed with regardless.
Come in unprepared as a team and without any coordination, you get picked off one by one, just as how the Fey would in legend. This is one of the fights that I’ve seen arguments in a lot.
By far one of my favourite trials and songs from ShadowBringers. It’s danger dressed up beautifully to trick you.

Titania is the Fairy king and the fairys love nothing more than to play and have fun. They are also incarnations of the souls of dead children so there is a pretty dark undertone to everything which reflects a bit in the lyrics i think.

This song is actually on Tempo with some of the Mechanics if you don't overdamage her.
For example, when the Fa-La-La-La-La comes in a mechanic of the fight starts, then after a whole round, she bonks you with it, the flaming fist of death is actually on time and she gives you a whole bar of the song to reposition to soak the damage for the healers.

  • @BlakeAustin2011

There’s a version of this song for the fae beast tribe quest that is just as whimsical, but with happier tones. It’s more piano focussed, and truly fits the story lore behind Titania and the Fae in general.
They are all children who have become faeries, akin to the Scottish myths that faeries will take sick and terminally I’ll babies and replace them with healthy babies if offered overnight in certain wooded areas.
I’ve heard someone sing this at about 65% speed, and that gives an even additional take on the meaning of the lyrics. When you discover the entire story, it’s remarkable how the same words can take on different meanings solely based on the underlying instrumentation and scoring.

    @Varizen87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

In the live version, it's a different vocalist from the original, but that's Amanda Achen, who sings Tomorrow and Tomorrow and just about any of the female vocals in all the Endwalker tracks.
Also, some lore and information about the track and its use in the game. Titania is the 2nd of the 5 Light Wardens you encounter. Several years before the story, Titania fought a Light Warden to protect the Fae People, but whoever slays a Light Warden, the most powerful Sin Eaters, is doomed to BECOME the next incarnation of the Light Warden they killed. Barring it can't claim the person who killed it, then the nearest living person becomes the Light Warden. FFXIV Shadowbringers takes place in a world filled by everlasting light that will swallow and destroy the world, and when you arrive in this world, you shoulder the mantle of The Warrior of Darkness, the person who will bring back the night sky to a world of eternal light on its final days. Each Light Warden is named after a type of Love. The named ones you know are named after types of Love. Philia is Brotherly Love, Eros is Romantic Love, Storge is love of family/parents, Innocence is Platonic love... Leaving one without a name. Titania is the King of the Fae (They're genderless people). It's suspected the Lightwarden she became is Mania, which is crazy love, the love you feel in the passion of the moment. Which gives some importance to the manic feel of the waltz of the music.
Also, love that you gave a shoutout to Kary Pomyu Pomyu. Her stuff is REALLY weird when you first watch and listen to her videos as it is an overload of cute in a fever dream... but it's her style and it's something I respect, and her sound is very catchy and interesting and I 100% see where you're going with that recommendation.

Anyone who knows about old stories of the Fair Folk know that the mildly upsetting undertones of this song are perfectly appropriate for Titania, Queen of the Fae.
The Fair Folk were those who spun straw into gold, built castles out of dreams and turned paupers into princesses. They were also those that kidnapped children to put into their stew, befouled milk with their presence, and trapped unfortunate souls in living nightmares for the slightest of offenses. They were called "the Fair Folk," "the Gentry," or sometimes just "the People" because none dared offend them.
They were fickle, glamorous, and always at least a little menacing, and this song captures that tone perfectly.
