Deep dish plates are more popular with grip athletes who are into hub lifting although shallow wide hubs are a cool challenge too. That plate diameter of the plate is why lifts like Self Loaded Leg Press aren’t as dangerous as most people think.

After 40+ years of lifting weights I only realized that the collars rotated a few days ago! Whenever the plates spun, I just assumed it was just less friction.
I thought I remembered Eleiko having rubber bumpers as early as 1971. They had a rounder rim (like the profile of a motorcycle tire) than the ones today.
Anyone ever smashed their finger between two bumper plates and got a sweet black thumbnail to show off for the subsequent 8mo while it grew out? Didn’t think so. That’s why iron is king. Because you can’t really call yourself a man until you’ve cried like a girl.
About the diameter of the 45lb plate: You said “they” did this and “they” did that? Who decided the plate would be 45cm? Was that the people at York Barbell working with the Olympic Committee, York by itself or what?
