- Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern.
He offers his thoughts on what the Steelers under coach Mike Tomlin have in common with the Philadelphia Eagles under Andy Reid, before his dynastic Super Bowl success with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Is Tomlin capable of a similar run elsewhere if the Steelers ever let him go? Is that a reason for GM Omar Khan and owner Art Rooney II to keep him in place here? And what should we make of Rooney praising Tomlin for the winning "culture" built around stars like T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward?
Paul tackles those topics, then talks a little Pirates. Specifically, how the lineup should be coming together around key pieces like Bryan Reynolds, Oneil Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes with spring training looming.
The problem with the Steelers starts with Art Rooney the Sr. Ever since he succeeded after the father passed away they have gone downhill. If Dan Rooney was alive Tomlin would have be gone by now. Dan had more football sense
About time Pittsburgh media stops giving Tomlin a pass on literally everything.
Thanks Paul. Hope you get some rest this weekend
Mike Tomlin - winning culture
14 out of 18 seasons without a playoff win.
3-10 last 13 playoff games.
outscored 73-0 in the 1st quarter of the 5 consecutive 1st-round exits
- 1st Steelers coach to lose 5 straight games since 1969.
- 8 seasons: Longest head coaching drought in NFL history without a playoff win
Should’ve been 15 out of 18 if not for Burfict and Cincy giving up 30 penalty yards in the final seconds 🤷♂️
Thank you for telling it like it is Paul!
Nothing likely to change since all the seats at Acrisure are always filled…
After nearly 2 decades Mike Tomlin still fekks up managing his timeouts, red flag challenges. BTW his clock management suks too
Good point on BEN! 18 years w/o a losing season, Ben or Tomlin?????
Andy is a good offensive guy x and os very good with qbs. He also went to a ton of championship games. Tomlin is not a x and os guy. Or good with qbs. Hes more of a cheer leader. Empty suit
This team won’t do what’s necessary to win. I believe we will never win another playoff game under Mike Tomlin. Also the smart move is to trade TJ now while you can get a decent return. Turn that pick into a top qb in next years draft. And it would be great to suck this year also. So basically suck for two years and collect draft capital for the future
Look at the last 6 super bowl matchups, all the coaches are offensive minded
the NFL has changed, its about offense now, rules favor the offense, coaches like Tomlin fail every year
Kansas City 31, San Francisco 20
Tampa Bay 31, Kansas City 9
Los Angeles Rams 23, Cincinnati 20
Kansas City 38, Philadelphia 35
Kansas City 25, San Francisco 22
Kansas City vs. Philadelphia
Common sense and truth. Good job Paul.
Paul been spittin facts all year❤
Listening to you is as relevant as watching the Combine, NFL is entertainment and football is a sport.
Love the show ! Rose Kreshon
So if everybody can see this why has there been not one change? It’s insane.
Eagles owner actually wants championship. Gives howie an open check book and trust he will make the right move. Also it’s an offensive thinking organization that wants innovation.
Paul, stay true to the "real Reporting"!!!!
It’s been said that Rooney’s gonna retire when Tomlin’s contracts up.. But, we gotta wait 3 more seasons for that to take place.
@6:19 the fact that you & I still watched it despite thinking it was ridiculous is the exact reason why they do it. WE the consumers have convinced the NFL ( and the NBA has the same issues) that we’re going to watch the all star game no matter what.
Completely agree Paul. I love coach T I just think it’s time. Everyone from Rooney down to Tomlin is just too cozy and comfy being 9-8 every year. I’ll root for Tomlin and the Steelers after they separate. But this stuff is unacceptable wasted hall of fame talent in Watt and possibly even Heyward. It’s completely unacceptable.
I’m from Philadelphia. You’re missing a lot why the Eagles and Andy Reid parted ways. His family was going through major problems in Philadelphia
If he was winning superbowls in Philadelphia like he is now in Kansas city do you think he leaves Philly even with the family problems?
Im a fan from Illinois. I dont know what the pennsylvania vibe feels like, but i tend to believe it has to be really hard to consider getting rid of tomlin is a bad idea, considering what philly has done right down the road since they gave up on andy reid.... People say, "look at what happened with andy reid & philly breaking up!" What? It was wildly successful for both parties! Reid is literally playing the super bowl against the team that fired him, and the eagles have been wildly succesful in the same timeframe. A timeframe that is eerily similar to the same timeframe of tomlin after steelers lost sb to packers. AND philly has had more playoff success post-reid than pitt has had post sb.vs.packers... Wake up Rooney.
Art Rooney = Dumbest owner in the NFL
Don't forget cheapest
@@stevepickering9697this is the problem, art doesn't want to spend money for coaches or players but fans blame Tomlin for not turning a group of average players into superbowl contenders. He needs players
In all fairness tomlin is the second biggest problem. Art2 is by far the biggest problem. Hes very cheap spends nothing on offense or the coaching staff. I see him on tv and want to check him for a pulse. He needs to spend money on offense and show some fire some leadership.
I’m not a AR2 fan but it isn’t about being cheap-the money is being spent but it’s within a salary cap… they used to be the, or one of the, highest paid offense years ago when Ben and AB were under their massive contracts.
He is cheap gotta get a good coaching staff so u can develop these players he won't do that the Steelers have the smallest coaching staff in the NFL that's why players don't do good in Pittsburgh
@@arthurthomas5787 - smallest staff but one of the highest individual paid coaches… they could easily pay Tomlin a bit less and hire a few others-this isn’t about being cheap, it’s about allocating the money properly.
Spot on. It's like the early 80s when the did that stupid "Battle of the network stars" tv show.
Do you remember in the 1970’s they use to have stupid things during pro bowl week. Mike Webster winning the Ironman competition and The boat races and so on. This stuff isn’t new what they do only they converted it to flag football for the “game”. I agree though, it is dumb, the whole pro bowl.
You Tomlin haters use the same tired eagles / Andy Reid argument to say Tomlin should be fired. 🙄 one fucking team. Tomlin alone is not the reason for the Steelers failures. Give it up already. Tomlin is good for business: he takes average players and teams and makes them competitive. If you want the Steelers to compete with the powerhouse teams of the league then they need to spend money and find a franchise quarterback like the powerhouse teams of the league . Tomlin can only do so much. He needs players. As long as the team is respectable and profitable Art Rooney is satisfied and won't make any drastic moves. Blame ownership, not coach Tomlin
I love the post-gazette ... the Steelers state media who up until this offseason have gone out of their way to prop up Mike Tomlin. 1 title and nearly100 million in salary to this clown.
Newlywed Game! They used it as an interrogation technique in Brooklyn 99. Nine Niiiine!
You mean Andy inherited a team with multiple hall of famers and ran the team into the ground?
Couldn't care less about Tomlin's "winning" record when most of his career the AFC N was one of the worst divisions in the league. Notice how the Steelers haven't improved while the division (for most part) has. Tomlin's gotta go!
Reid Won in the playoffs - even in Philly. Not much of a comparison.
Acupuncture!!!
And you should throw dirt on the pirates. They have never earned the benefit of the doubt in my entire life. I’m 33 years old about to be 34 and I have never seen them do anything meaningful. I got to see a few teams make wildcard runs then Pedro Alvarez would air mail balls from third into the stands missing the first baseman completely. Those were the best teams I’ve seen the pirates have. 2010-2013 or something in there. Just off the top of my head. They are going to completely waste the talent of Skenes. Just like every other stud player we’ve ever got we’ll see them play somewhere else after their rookie deal because we can’t go all in just for a couple seasons. We see other small market teams do it. But when it comes to the pirates they just don’t. It’s always the same over and over their high end is the Steelers now losing in the wildcard round. Low end is constant rebuild mode. I’ve never seen them make a legit run before and I probably never will. But I’ll watch because that’s what we have now. All our major sports teams suck and could for awhile. But there is a couple young stars in the pens system and Skenes should possibly win a Cy Young so I guess we have that. Also prob see the Steelers draft more high picks on defense which hasn’t done us any good 🤭🤭🤭. Keep adding to the highest paid unit and neglect the offense. Ugh we may be doomed
Trade GP and Fitz for 2 2nds
It would be wise of the Steelers to hire Eric Bieniemy as the Offensive Coordinator. he is available and he was a huge part of the Chiefs elite offensive game plan when he was there. I would feel so much better about the Steelers Offense with Justin Fields and Eric Bieniemy together than Justin Fields with Arthur Smith. Arthur Smith is not a good OC. I saw enough of his offense in Atlanta, it’s not good. Please Steelers, for all that is HOLY, hire ERIC BIENIEMY as the OC!!!!
Tomlin I m and ArtRo only sucks
Paul, move on from the question “Why is Tomlin still coaching the Steelers?” Rooney ‘s made it clear he loves the guy. Tomlin was hired because of the Rooney Rule and he will stay, as long as he wants, because of the Rooney Rule.
Yes, move on from the biggest issue plaguing the Steelers and do something constructive like a really early mock draft 😂
Nah, I get you-and yes, I had a long back and forth with someone the other day about how the Rooney Rule helps Tomlin keep his job.
