I think the editing team for the first season of Call Me By Fire had it the absolute worst XD It was soooo awful to have to edit out or blur someone out overnight. OVERNIGHT! And so much content was already filmed too. They even had to edit the finale AFTER it was already published.

To me, Cai Xukun is like the Justin Bieber of China: he is insanely popular (lots of people would call him overrated), he debuted super young, he has a massive (mostly female) fanbase, he gets made fun of online a lot, etc.

Not that what happened isn’t weird, but I don’t believe you understand the scale of privileges enjoyed by Chinese celebrities. The Chinese entertainment industry is extremely protectionist-K-pop, Netflix, Amazon videos and all foreign platforms are banned in China. Those who make it in the industry make an insane amount of money given the lack of competition, much higher than kpop idols and probably higher than Hollywood A-listers. However, the protectionism comes with a cost. It’s a communist country after all, and people who are morally (if not legally) questionable are not allowed to keep earning that much money when the news of their characters breaks. If they enjoy the privileges of being a celebrity in a communist country, they bear the costs, too.
Illegally monitoring someone isn't that odd of a thing to be cancelled for. Plus Stephanie said the ban has been lifted.
Did he actually found guilty because I haven't seen any article telling that yes he is guilty, so now what is he going to disappear for few years, or what.... Was he really guilty, because since both agreed on terminating I don't think it's illegal anymore beside that minor incident was also fake.... it's not bizarre for their standard. you do know that china is running on the whole tight censorship and stuff right? they DO curate their media really well, what they let their youth to consume etc. moreover, it's not really THAT hard to be a decent human being no?

Broooo. I remember watching Idol Producer when Kun was in it. I loveee Zhang Yixing and since he was like THE mentor I watched the whole thing. I remember how big and iconic Kun was, I had no idea about this whole drama. And you guys should definitely watch the season he’s in, it has so many good contestants (Lin Yanjun, Fan Chengcheng, Justin, Zhu Zhengting, You Zhangjing, Chen Linong, etc). I tried watching later seasons and they simply did not hit the spot.
And I’m so happy to see most of them making advancements in their own career.

I appreciate the visual aids this time. I’ve gone on an old episode binge and noticed there weren’t many clips or pictures used in old episodes to help us visualize, so I would go to look for the original source. And I was SURPRISED at how accurate Stephanie would be in here retellings!! Like, picture perfect accurate - I’m impressed! Stephanie doesn’t get enough credit for how much information she stores in her head and is able to spit out for us to get the actual FACTS!

That was the weirdest, most unhinged series of events that I've heard about when it comes to someone getting canceled 😮 it played out like some kind of drama comedy movie.
I was a huge fan of Idol Producer when it first came out, and this is such a weird story, but I actually wrote a university essay about Cai Xukun! Back in 2018 when I started university, I began majoring in Chinese Mandarin, and as part of my cultural classes I took a class in Asian pop culture, and one of my homeworks was to watch the show! (for me it was a rewatch, as I had already seen the show hahaha!) I closely followed Cai Xukun and other idols from the show after its end, and rewatching it from time to time is great Mandarin practice for me.
This was a very interesting episode! Despite idolising someone for years, you never truly know a person, and this is true for any celebrity- no matter their status.

Edit on my thoughts about the topic: You never truly know an idol. I watched idol producer and I thought despite always ranking high, Xukun had a very good personality. He seemed humble and looked after his other contestants. For example, there was a round where he let someone else be the center because he knew they’d probably be eliminated next round and it was honestly so touching.Him and another contestant Ziyi were like the older brothers to their group. They helped them practice and looked after the weaker contestants etc. I was a huge fan watching the show in middle school. But the Asian idol industry in particular is SO good at painting their idols in the best light possible. You can never idolize celebs.

Yeah, I watched Idol Producer with him and also YWY where he was a mentor. There are two possibilities though: either he WAS a good person at the beginning (during Idol Producer S1) but then fame got into his head and he turned the way he is OR he was just really good at pretending. My bet would be on the first but who knows right? I would say, his mother really went and ruined him for good cause I see nothing wrong with the abortion thing (I mean, they are adults and I actually like that the girl was given a choice) if she didn't went crazy then the abortion with the girl could've been over right away. But even without that, I would say I was more disappointed at the clips showing how he acted all mighty with the opening doors and how he treats others as his 'willing assistant' and expects them to be at his feet at all times. As a kpop fan for a decade, I don't really mind things regarding their romantic life I mean they ARE people but it's such a turn off when they have that kind of attitude.

Hi Stephanie, since you mentioned Idol Producer, I was wondering if you could do a story on the korean one (Produce 101) and the whole fraudulent voting scandal/rigging of contestants. I just want to know if there's much more to the whole scandal in relations to how entertainment companies run their business
agreed!! I heard the producer was arrested, season 4's group (forgot their name) got disbanded, Izone almost got disbanded... and I want to know more! It's gonna be fascinating for those who didn't know about it too.

When I was watching this I originally thought I was watching it on the other channel… I had to comment that it was so fun watching how much you laughed in this video amidst so many subjects that are of strong matter… mix that in with the fact that you’re all wrapped up (should have been a chicken outfit for merit points) and using a menthol inhaling stick, you had me cracking up!! The chinese entertainment industry is very fascinating to me but its a huge struggle to find translated content. I tried to learn Mandarin but its such a pain to learn, or maybe my head is just a little too stupid. Anyway I love to see you talk about chinese cases, I would probably never hear about them otherwise as they dont get much attention in german media.

Just to clarify, it's not photoshop, they could have had used Nuke or Mocha, so you don't just photoshop frame by frame, you do a rotoscope and a tracking to edit out Kun. So that's VFX compositor's work, it's still elaborated to do but it would be worse and slower to do on photoshop.
Ya as someone that hav learned Photoshop... it's hard if it's not a picture. So prob other software.
Respect for the editing team lol they must work really hard on that episode
