    Great to see this. I worked 40 years ago as troubleshooter for the analogue and digital storage oscilloscopes in the production plant in Heerenveen, the Netherlands. The curvetracer was used for measuring transistors in the troubleshooting process. Nice you restored this peace of equipment. It is using the old style ceramic component strips. The silver solder is specially for these strips otherwise they could crack and had to be replaced. High quality standards in those days. For cleaning contacts only isopropanol alcohol was allowed. Thanks for sharing!

    In the past I have carefully dragged a small strip of paper soaked in Electrosolve (contact cleaner) through those gold contacts while each one was closed and had it solve my intermittent issues. It doesn't take much, even IPA would probably work. As long as they are clear of foreign material, the contacts are quite reliable. I would probably stay away from anything that leaves a film behind like DeoxIT. I love DeoxIT, but I don't use it in this situation. Nice work bringing it back to life, I thought it was gone for sure!

    Fantastic! Really enjoyed that whole series! It was great to see how those switch assemblies look internally. Will keep that in mind when one of mine starts to go 😂

    Excellent work and great outcome and as I said in the last video " I'm sure you have eliminated dirty wafer switches and pots so your really close " dirty or broken is the same thing ! I look forward to the future of you channel I am sure it will continue to grow as well as it has...cheers.

    It seems like we missed the resolution to the cliffhanger... how did you figure out the correct position of the knob relative to the cams?

    • @IMSAIGuy
      @IMSAIGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did talk about the cam having a blank spot that denoted a starting position. I took a lot of thought to figure it out

    • @SkyhawkSteve
      @SkyhawkSteve 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IMSAIGuy How did you figure out what knob position was matched with the cam's blank spot? I'm guessing there was a no-function spot on the panel? Either that or figure out some sort of temporary method to clamp the cam tube to the knob and gradually figure out the proper position. Glad to see the curve tracer brought back to usefulness again!

    Do not attempt to adjust the picture
    We are controlling transmission
    We will control the horizontal
    We will control the vertical
    We can change the focus to a soft blur
    or sharpen it to crystal clarity

      @@IMSAIGuy I removed the knob on the horizontal volt/division and the mounting screws for that board and moved it out of the way to get access. The zero and invert button covers can be carefully pulled off from the front. I put the unit with the front face down and sprayed IPA into the switch and caught the residue in a towel.

      now that it is all functional, the funniness gets better and better. probably some resistance that is healing itself. people say just clean everything, but they have never been in front of this beast. It would take a month to tear it down, fix the switches and put it back together. I find it perfectly usable in the present state. I did do a calibration that took about three hours and it is doing well. more videos on using it will come

    My 576 needs them replaced.

    The curve tracer reminds me of the Heathkit Q meter I bought at an estate sale some years ago. A device designed to measure quantities that advances in engineering design methods have rendered... not quite irrelevant, but rendered unnecessary from a measurement perspective. Q still matters; no one needs to measure the Q of particular components.

    Ok so I am supposed to make a comment after doing so the last video,.... hum
    Well first congratulations on the progress.
    You want me to say knob twiddling was a deciding factor, well it may have helped.
    But the important aspect is you moved from twiddling to diagnosis.
    (I am trying to retain my basic smart-ass-ness here you know.) ;-}
    There remains a problem yet so - some time it would be good to complete the diagnosis.
    But certainly the curve tracer is useful in the present state.
    I don't always finish every little bit either. Why do now that which can be done later?...
    I am supposing that the display on the right side of the CRT is for recording settings with a camera. It would be nice to see that restored also but finding the parts may take sometime.
    Maybe people part these out? I don't know. Show us the tech behind the window.
    Perhaps viewers may have what is needed,... ?
    But for $200 + some twiddling + diagnosis = you have a useful instrument!
    Not bad altogether.
    ---
    This opens a whole new range of testing things for your videos,...
    like those peanut tubes,... ;-}

      I'm sorry my 9 episodes did not show the 100 hrs and one month of diagnosis leading me to determine the fault must be mechanical. the symptom was always clear: turn the knob nothing happens. there was so much wrong with the unit it took a lot of work to even worry about that problem until I got the rest functional. The digital readout does work fine if you turn the illumination knob all the way up. I will have some more videos on curve tracers in the future.
