    That last bit message is so true. That’s how I first came to love Omega.
    One day I walked past an boutique, and entered just to see what all the hype was all about.
    2 hours later I walked out with an aqua terra 38.
    These watches you just need to see them in person.

    I have a 57 trilogy. As someone who is not a fan of speedys, I absolutely love this watch! The smaller case and broad hands make such a huge difference!

    Omega does green well. Starting with the Aqua Terra, and continuing with the 300M and now this model.

  • @waterfordrs22

    This updated ‘57 is a massive improvement over the previous generation. I love the steel bezel, broad arrow hands, smaller case diameter, not as tall. The colors, especially the burgundy are intriguing, but I’m all in on the sandwich dial with this one. The movement is gorgeous.
    All that aside, I’m still not sure I’d choose this over the Pro. Not being able to afford either anytime soon- I’m not going to lose sleep over it. Of all the takes on the Speedmaster that aren’t a Pro, this is easily my favorite.

    • @brownmcpherson5724
      @brownmcpherson5724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the earlier version with broad arrow hands. It had the advantage of a 100m water resistance. But it was just too thick and I sold it. The only negative on the new one is, for me, no automatic movement. I don't need this "interaction" with watches which so many seem to like.

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@brownmcpherson5724 I take zero concern with the direction they went with water resistance, but I simply don’t swim with a watch on.
      The manual wind movement is simply great, I have a fondness for them. I could do without the date complication, I tend to favor no date complications, It’s been a while since I bothered to change the date on any of my watches at the turn of a month. I find that more a hassle than having to manual wind, which I enjoy. I keep three watches running constantly and the rest of my small collection, they are run once a week in average.
      The height of the previous ‘57 would have been an instant deal breaker. In an ideal world there would be a Speedmaster closer to the original case diameter that interests me.
      This is a great watch.

    • @brownmcpherson5724
      @brownmcpherson5724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@waterfordrs22 Sounds like the Speedmaster Pro meets all your requirements. I've had those and like them. But on the 57, I like the date, which I use daily, and an automatic movement. That's not to say that I would not buy it. It's a great watch.
      As to not setting the date, etc., that doesn't work for me. I set everything and go nuts when a timing bezel is not set to 12 noon.

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brownmcpherson5724 It bothered me for about an hour the first time I decided not to update to the correct date. Quickly, I found it liberating. That said, I value a dial with good symmetry and favor watches with no date at all.
      The ‘57 has a steel bezel and sandwich dial both of which I think look just fabulous. I’ve grown bored with larger cased watches. My favorite watches are 40mm, if I’m going to stray - I’d prefer to go in the direction of 39 or 38. It would take a watch such as the Pro or new ‘57 to consider going larger. For the most part, comfort aside, smaller watches, simply as objects look better with the fat trimmed off. Around 38-40mm. I’d where things really start to get interesting for me. A 42mm Speedmaster - it’s such a perfect watch for me.
      At the end of the day, a Pro would probably prove more obtainable, I’m more likely to find one at the right time and right price. I recently bought a Railmaster and it’s been such a great watch for me, I don’t have a burning desire for anything new at the moment which Is how it should be. For now, it’s nice to know that the Speedmaster continues to thrive and they are able to offer it in a form that remains faithful to the heritage and another form that simultaneously is a nod to tradition and something new.
      There are so many variants of the Speedmaster that do nothing for me, I hope they wind up being improved a bit too with slimmer cases for one. I believe Tudor is aggressively targeting Omega’s audience with watches that arrive on the market for a bit less money - at least for now. They don’t have a chronometer they can rival the Speedmaster in my opinion. The Seamaster Diver 300 looks a bit dated to my eye…… Not so for the core of the Speedmaster line.

    • @brownmcpherson5724
      @brownmcpherson5724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@waterfordrs22 I do think that a date at 6pm makes for a pretty balanced dials. I have a 4.30 date which I thought would bother me but it doesn't.
      I think my problem with the manual wind is that on the Speedmaster Pro the crown is quite small and I have large fingers. I was always annoyed winding it. The 57 has a larger crown and that should make it more agreeable.
      On your comments about the Seamaster 300, I don't care for the newest design. I have 2 Seamasters from the early 2000's both with sword hands (2255.80 and 2234.50) and those watches are really lovely. Thin, beautifully made and very comfortable on the wrist (both with speedmaster bracelets). And, the ETA based movement is very accurate.

    The speedmaster 57 thickness is actually really impressive. It's one of omegas thinnest new manual wind movements and thinner than the moonwatch. The domed sapphire is to keep the 57 with vintage vibes since it's history is deeply embedded

    I am also a big fan of manual wind watches. I have 3 in my collection (2 of which are Speedmasters). I liked your analogies about the connection with the manual wind watch, spot on. Great content as always, cheers!

    • @mvhdsk1122
      @mvhdsk1122 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also like that analogy, but for another reason:
      There are people who prefer cats and there are those who prefer dogs. Both are pets, both need your care and attention. But one (the dog) needs much more, needs you to take him out etc. So, I am a cat person. I like caring for my cat but a cat does most of its day in its own way, I don't need to pay attention all the time. Thats why I love automatic watches and probably will never buy a watch that I would need to wind manually. I love my watch and of course I take care, but most of the time, it takes care of itself.
      However - I do not think I appreciate my watch less than you do, or have a "lesser" connection to it. Maybe, that is rather more a myth constructed by manual-owners. If we both loose our watch, say, to a mugger, we would maybe cry about that watch - but most probably not about the magic moments of meditative manual winding.

  • @RedwoodAggie
    @RedwoodAggie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was pleasantly surprised by this one at the AD. I put the black one on the wrist, and really was impressed. I was more impressed than when I had the sapphire Moon watch on. I like that it has the date, though it makes keeping up with the winding all the more important. I kind of wonder what the black one would look like if the lume were white, but maybe they think that's too close to the Moonwatch in aesthetic? I saw a video that said the sandwich lume indices was so they could put more lume in. Typically, the more brown/faux patina lume isn't quite as bright (not certain with Omega's), so that's an interesting juxtaposition. I also thought it was curious/disappointed that the other ones did not have the sandwich dial, as I think that would be a great look. I do really like the blue one though, and didn't think to look for that at the AD. I need to see it in person, but the black or the blue on bracelet would be my ideal choices. The leather straps look nice, but I really loved that bracelet, and good leather straps are easier to come by than a good bracelet. My only other quandary (same thing impacts my liking the SBGE "Mist Flake" Grand Seiko) is I can get so much watch out of Tudor (e.g. Pepsi GMT, Pelagos) for half the price. I wonder if it's really worth it to spend 2x. They're excellent, but it's a tough thing to justify. Anyway, that's for me to work out with my wife haha.

    I was disappointed handling one of these in the flesh. Just didn't feel special. The bracelet felt incredibly light and hollow, and the fact that omega is unwilling to incorporate a micro adjustment on the fly at this price level is a dealbreaker for me.

    A speedmaster in 40-41mm would be an absolute monster. Question is: Does Omega has the balls to change the diameter size of the original Moonwatch? To be honest - I love my Speedy, but I would rather have a 40-41mm Speedy than the current 42mm one.

    • @johna797
      @johna797 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Speedmaster professional really is a 40mm watch based on bezel diameter. The crown guards give the extra 2mm which is where the official measurement is taken. The watch has had these exact measurements since 1963, and critically the watch worn on the moon had these specifications, Omega won’t ever change that in their standard Moonwatch pro offerings.
      However I’d look for a used ‘first omega in space’ model which was based on one of the pre 1963 Speedmasters, and critically doesn’t have the crown guards.
      In my mind these 57 Speedmasters are the replacement for that watch.
