@JamesBurden-d4u If bodybuilding was really objective, then why not just measure muscle mass, body fat, skin thickness, etc and declare the winner? It is all and always was totally subjective to the eye of the judges and what priority they place on each aspect.

This video does not show the poses. When flexed and in position Yates kills them. When your lats are that superior and you are certainly not lacking in legs - you are guaranteed to win 4 poses, Front Lat, Rear Lat, Front Bi and rear Bi. That alone is enough to get the points needed.
While weak genetically and aesthetically not as pleasing, Yates was unbeaten in individual muscle categories, particularly his back and traps. His conditioning was unparalleled as well. It seemed he was carved out of granite. That, a business and strategic mind about the sport, and mastering one of the most effective and time effective bodybuilding crafts in the Mentzer system made Yates ahead of the game and every one else.
Yates is the godfather of Growth Hormone. Being from the UK, where it was easily obtained, back then, he was one of the first high level Olympia competitors to use it. That explains his size and the bubble gut. It didn't take long for many other competitors to follow suit. If you look at some of the other competitors that competed that year, then look at them in the following years, you'll see the progression. Yes, Ray and Levrone were both robbed. Dorian had 0 symmetry, and was blocky, but this marked the start of the GH monsters. You can draw larger crowds with the monsters with freaky size. So, that's where we are to this day. However, there is less bubble gut, and more symmetry now. Yates wouldn't have even cracked the top 20 today. Just sayin 😏
Im friends of Dorian and my inspiration Sugar Ray. Both were my heros coming up. Dorian i would go see at Temple gym. Both men played pivotal parts in my career. Thank you to all 3 champions for your inspiration in bodybuilding.
Yate's lats are simply unreal. He used to be my second favorite bodybuilder, behind Schwarzenegger, but he's become such a reprehensible person, so I've lost all respect for him.

Not only had Dorian a big "pregnant woman" gut. His obliques were extending to the side to an already wider waist. That combined with a short upper torso made him lock super blocky and the opposite of Shawn and Kevin who had a great V-Taper. In addition to that the shape of his pecs are really bad. Not that wide sweep and the inside of the lower pecs toward the middle of the chest go up in a bad way if you compare it to Shawn when they stand together. Add to that the less then perfect arms and shoulders that aren't matching up to his super wide lats, it is a mystery that he won! I don't think he even looks that conditioned. At least when not flexing and just standing there, I think he looks the smoothest of the three. I mean he even look bloated in some positions from the front.
yates was a beast not his best but still good enough to win if you understand how it’s judged on the 7 compulsory poses in those days which was done in the afternoon before the main evening show. Dorian stated he was bloated in the evening from some thing he ate as for the bad left arm it can be hidden in most of the compulsory poses. The weak poses were obviously from the front especially double bi ceps but the rest he beats the opposition.
Just look at the belly on Yates not look at the trim chiseled waist of Shawn . Shaw had Aesthetics for days and plenty of rock hard muscle, he should have won.
