  • This tutorial shows the finer points of how to get reliable measurements with a height gage to thousandths of an inch. This demonstrates use of the gage and all of its adjustments and locks as well as use of the stock measurement probe versus use of a dial indicator as its probe. Discussion of do's and don''ts and pro tips.

What is the dial indicator mount called?

very helpful, thanks. I just found a used gauge, looks exactly the same as you have. The indicator holder was not present....can you think of any reason not to just take a piece of steel and make one end rectangular to attach to the gauge and drill a hole in the other end + probably a grub screw to hold the dial indicator?

That'd work fine. I'm partial to the split ring type swivel clamps shown here because they won't mar the indicator. But I'm anal about marking up my tools.
The holding bars and swivel clamps are sold separately as accessories, if you want to go that route. Probably some cheap ones from China and India on ebay.

@@Sammus7t thanks for the reply and tip about what they're called. It was oddly difficult to find them on Aliexpress but I did manage to find one, www.aliexpress.com/item/4000029584176.html.
