- We get after the Neglected Deluxe before she even gets off the trailer. After hours and hours of grinding all 23 windows are exposed and she looks better than ever. That's one creative way to fix a hole in the windshield: Weld a piece of sheet metal over it into the frame! :D
Great tunes, great car! My first car was a '74 Super Bug and I listened to a lot of ZZ Top in it back in the day. Would love to drive a bug for a couple of hours on the weekend every now and then.

Nice find! that's the first time I've seen a 23 with the windows welded over! I scored a 1960 23 a few years back & the roof had been cut off! luckily they still had everything there, a little welding later & it was back to its original glory!
The windows were sheeted up so that the bus could be used to haul grain. It had a tow bar on the front and a solid axle welded in place of the transaxle. They would tow it down to the grainery and fill it with grain through the sunroof and haul it back to the farm and store the grain in it until they needed to repeat the process. Expensive grain cart.

53 Deluxe. WOW!!!! That is a rare bus for sure. I'm sure the guy at Pats knows what he has. A bus like that would be a once in a lifetime find. Very cool.
We go to California every year and we are always amazed at all the cool old VW's we see. Around here we don't see that many.
V-dubs are cool. I cannot remember the man's name (too long ago), but back in 1975 at the University of New Orleans, a local mechanic ran a not-for-credit class on repairing VW's. In the class, he taught his students how to completely disassemble a Beetle, all parts laid out on the floor, then to evaluate, repair, and reassemble the thing.
I was only attending as a guest of my lady friend, who did all her own repair work. I was just there to enjoy. I got a real kick of the work the man did. His basic text was one on how to repair your VW, with some cool hand-drawn illustrations. I am sure it is still on sale today.
So many people call these old buses "hippie" or "stoner" buses which is pretty funny because most hippies and stoners can't afford them anymore. They are very unique and totally "awesome" looking. No other vehicle that compares. Good luck with your search. The are still out there.
I once thought that way but over the years have come to appreciate how simple and well thought out the old original drivetrain really is. The plan for the 23 right now includes some porsche parts but they are period vintage speed parts. We have a 356 motor in the works for it right now and maybe a little lower than stock but now that low. We'll see what happens.
you´re so lucky over there with your climate. here in germany there aint any left of those vw´s - all rusted away. great video !

I always wanted to take a bus and put a modern custom cad designed chassis under it,air bags,maybe put Honda's new 1 liter turbo diesel motor and cruise in Cadillac comfort at 40 mpg.I love the old,but like the CEO of Porsche once said,anything that improves the vehicle,safety,ride,comfort is the way to go if you plan to drive it.

Love the vids man! I have a 62 ford econoline panel van, I'm all about the van life, dad used to have a 64 vw deluxe back in the 80's and rolled it and sadly it was crushed, would have loved to have it now, but anyway keep up the good work man love the channel

VW + ZZ Top
Most of the projects we pick up don't really get a restoration. We get them running, clean the interior, buff and spot repair paint and sell them. This bus is not a bus we plan to sell. The plan with this 23, our forgotten single cab and a couple others is to keep them. It is pretty difficult to do a complete restoration on a vehicle and then make any money on it when you sell it. It just costs so much money to restore them. Thanks for watching.

Awesome vid you would love it in San Luis Obispo County CA there are vintage VW's literally everywhere here. I'm a classic car lover and I haven't really been into old VW's much but I really like how the VW fans are usually patina advocates and fans like myself unlike most other car people. I was just wondering if you like patina?

They are definitely becoming more valuable but not 200K valuable. Pretty sure that was a case of two guys with more money than brains having a ____ measuring contest at the expense of the Volkswagen community. Now everyone that has an old bus in their back yard thinks their bus is worth 200K even though they will never do anything with it. Getting hard for the average Joe to buy one of these because of all these TV programs claiming they are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for watching and commenting.

eyestungdustnblind I might have to retract my comment about the $200K bus that you mentioned. I sold a bus last week to a really cool guy in California. I decided to deliver the bus and take the family down to Southern California to pass spring break. As it turns out the guy who bought my bus was one of the guys who restored and sold the Barrett Jackson $200K 23 window. He had another couple of restorations going and I got to take a look at his work. I must say it was by far some of the best restoration work I have seen. He also said that since the Barrett Jackson bus he has had numerous clients approach him about buses and all have sold for nearly the same amount as the one at auction. They are however second to none in quality and restored beyond what they looked like from the factory. These guys do great work and people are willing to pay the money for their craftsmanship.
Jeremy Cutts but again, the average country bumpkin doesn't know that and still wants an arm an a leg for stuff just because its old. to them a split window is just an old bug while the pile of junk superbeetle in his yard is a priceless classic ;-)

The lighting in the booth is great and it is nice when grinding to have good ventilation. The paint booth is always cleaned very well before we do any painting so dust isn't an issue. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hey JC, I'm a younger VW enthusiast and I'm on the hunt for a split window. I'm based in Utah and would like to find something like you do just once... Any tips
Keep your eyes peeled in back alleys and around old farm houses. I was in Utah the other day and had about a half an hour to kill while my wife and daughters were at a wedding. I drove some old back roads in the area and found an old Baywindow Westy and 3 early bugs. Stuff is still out there you just have to look. Good Luck with your search. JC.

why was there metal over the windows
+brucekirk89 The guy was using this as a grain cart. I'm guessing when he got it the windows were broken so they just tack welded sheet metal over al the windows. He would pull it down to the feed store and fill it with grain through the sunroof opening and then cover the sunroof with a sheet of plywood. Thanks for watching. JC.
what kind of idiotic person would use an amazing vehicle like that as a grain cart?! I hope the same ignorance that led to that also led to the guy getting jack shit for it when it was sold. even before these vas were as popular as they are now and before they were as OLD as they arte now it seems insane that anyone would look at that thing and think "hm, we should completely fuck this thing up and use it as a trailer."
