Simon is a walking library! I hope you guys will film similar episode with the over and unders, sidelocks...German Suhl guns (Jonny promised me in one comment 😂). Greetings from Serbia.

As a follower of this channel and a side by side enthusiast who owns both sidelocks and box locks, I have enjoyed this video immensely. As a Spaniard who admires the quality of guns built in my home country, I slightly resent the derogatory comments about Spanish guns. There are extremely well built examples that can be bought for pennies because they do not have an English name to them.

This is so good. I just bought a WW Greener on an A&D action whose serial number puts it made in 1880. The really neat thing for me is that Westley Richards apparently sleeved the barrels and made a new stock in about 1960, so it's proofed for modern ammo. It's no museum or collector's piece, but it's a great shooter's piece.

I had the pleasure of meeting Simon at the Northern Shooting Show. A fantastic guy who I thanked for creating my interest in collecting old English shotguns. His level of knowledge is incredible and like others have said I could listen to him talk for hours in an attempt to learn as much as I can about this subject. I have watched this video about six times now and love every minute of it. I hope to meet him again one day to tell him of what possible gems I have found due to listening to his expertise. I hope one day I will get the chance to visit Holt's and take part in an auction.

Thank you for a wonderful channel. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, and the others with Mr. Reinhold on the subject of our British crafted traditional side-by-side game guns. It reminded me of a favourite sentence from Steve Bodio's book, 'Good Guns' wherein the author asks, "Why kill a beautiful bird with an ugly gun?" I would love to see an episode featuring walked-up shooting for red grouse, pointed by our traditional pointing dogs bred for that game, the English setter and pointer, and taken with our beautiful British SxS guns. How sad it is that both (our guns and dogs) have become obsolete to continental breeds and guns . . .

My friend lives in greeners old house on the river wye. I love my old single barrel martini action greener, my first shotgun. It's definitely a farmers gun, but it has never failed. It doesn't like modern powder cartridges, if you try and eject the cartridge to soon after the shot it won't eject, leave it a few more seconds and it will fly out the same. Just wish the gun was worth something so I could justify getting the stock extended to fit me now.

I have just bought my self a side by side, side lock and my friend bought an AYA box lock to have ago at shooting something different, and I'm glad we did , having fun all the way. I have noticed that the side lock is harder to cock than the box lock, is this the way with these guns or is there something wrong with the side lock ?

"Unreliability is enjoyable". If that’s not a defining English charactaristic I don’t know what is. The old joke about English cars is if an engineer can design a car that breaks down in a manner you can’t fix, then he wins. However, as usual this is an interesting video.

My auto mechanic was happily perusing a boat catalog after a customer of his bought a used Bentley without consulting him in advance. I think that the only shotgun I've ever owned that required a repair is a Greener. But its handling qualities are certainly very good.

Hi Mate. I have a Greener sxs Royal G60 with Baker ejectors, 12 gauge
When storing it disassembled I fired it so that the springs are not under tension
Now when trying to assemble it the locks do not move, the barrels cannot be reassembled
I thought that by reloading it, which I did by pushing the hammers back, the locks would release.
    But no, it's still stuck
Do you know what I should do or what I'm doing wrong?
From already thank you very much

One day my daughters bought me a "Gun Dog", pedigree and even a name. "Here is your Christmas gift dad, its name too is one dear to your heart". So without further ado I called my new gun to heel, "Here boy Dixon Round Action". "No dad, its one of the Markdown Muffin strain". I have always desired a Dixon Round Action Shotgun, hence the dogs name, he later answered to Purdy.

Great video, but I'm a bit confused on one thing. Your photos of the lumps on a Greener FP look nothing like the lumps on my Greener FP. Mine was lettered from Greener and was started and finished in 1903. So, did the name Fascile Princeps get used over a series of different actions? Really curious about that.

I dont know why UK have dumped box locks, plenty of good English box locks in Oz, used in the field and sporting competitions.
I have 2 x Boswell's, 1 x Bland, 2 x BSA. The Boswell's are high grade guns, the wood to metal fit and metal to metal is outstanding, I look at MX8 and there is
no comparison, lacking in refinement for a USD$10K gun, the stocks grade on the Boswell is better than many guns made by top tier UK makers.
    One of best handling guns is a BSA s/n 27537 30" chopper lump barrels 1235 grm, 6lb 8oz, beautifully balanced, long tapper chokes 1/8 & 1/2, 2 3/4 chambers.
I think the barrels where custom made(profiled) to buyers specification.
The Boswell pigeon gun is made on a 10ga(8lb 6oz) action, 32" barrels, F&F, 1 1/2oz proof, the gun was used to win a Aston Martin Lagonda at Monte Carlo in 1930's,
inherited by my Grand Father, my father witnessed the owner shoot 39 ducks straight before missing.

Mostly right but a few slips and errors . Talk of Westley Richards and show a Webley . W Greener not WW Greener was the muzzle loader supporter and is a scallop back not a scoop .There were several Court cases involving patent infringements Greener versus Bonehill for one , many of the Patents granted in the late 1800's would not stand up to day and wee tenuous even then .
