    Off-duty cops within Hoods is canon since the ones with pantyhoses and jackets can shout "Freeze! You dumbass!" as if they accidentally used police lingo and tried to cover it up by insulting Cash, not to mention they sound more gruff and are older than the other Hoods.
    This is the type of worldbuilding that makes Rockstar great.

    I think Carcer City is actually based on Camden New Jersey a city just outside Philadelphia that was once a vast growing community based around the industrialization of Philly, but has fallen into decay. The crime there has gotten so bad that local authorities have experimented with CCTV surveillance to monitor the streets and crack down on crime. The CCTV system similar to what Stark Weather uses in the game.

    It sucks that it was revealed by the police that in the murder case about manhunt 1 it was the victim who use to play the game, not the perpetrator but the media still blamed Rockstar.

      Fair points in regards to Starkweather and Leoin terms of how they treat us in both games. I didn’t realize until you pointed it out in regards to the dynamics they both had.
      I also agree that the murder case, although incredibly tragic, was certainly unfair to all parties including Rockstar. An innocent person, a fan of theirs, was killed and they were then blamed.

    so glad to see Manhunt get talked about and all the lore explained in 2023. this game has such an atmosphere that i genuinely have not seen or felt from any other. the real world tie-ins like the valiant video website, serial killer names, and news about this game's violence almost made it all feel like a fantastic fever dream. there may nvr be something as dark and gruesome as Manhunt ever again, but a thoughtful remaster, direct sequel, or 3rd unrelated story would be absolutely insane

      Very well said mate 👍👏 couldn’t agree more. I spent a lot of time on edge in this game and it really ramps up the tension and feeling of unease even 20 years later!
      The tension in Subnautica and Alien Isolation reminds me of the feeling i had all those years ago in Manhunt!
      A good quality remake with emphasis on the stealth and thinking on your feet in regards to crafting, hiding, distracting, etc would be incredible. Think about how many options there are in Metal Gear Solid V to mess with guards, or how they adapt to you; (for example they will start wearing helmets if you go for headshots a lot)
      Imagine that kind of AI , made way more aggressive and suspicious. Able to co ordinate and use the same tools you have to help flush you out or corner you...
      Put that AI in a modern engine and stick with the story , create the different stages as individual sandboxes with their own loot, terrain, pros and cons(if it’s a wet muddy zoo your footprints could give you away?)weather,

    • @akabkb6692
      @akabkb6692 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Dan Houser had already confirmed and stated long ago that he'd never seen Jimmy as "that level of degenerate" and how he's too white collar to be a carjacker or any kind of criminal.
      What people also don't seem to understand is that, just because characters and even places are being referenced in another Rockstar game, does not mean they are within the same universe. For example, characters like Tommy, CJ, Claude, etc. names are written on a wall in GTA IV. Doesn't mean they are in the HD universe. Or really, making any reference to that at all. It's just a simple nod and a bit of fun on their side to reference beloved protagonists from their previous games.
      I feel like the only exception to that rule about universes when it comes to GTA was Claude Speed, who was in GTA 2 and GTA 3 and GTA SA. And those were the times before Rockstar established the whole different GTA universes thing, iirc. (In case anyone doesn't know, in the past, there was an official Rockstar character quiz which did refer to GTA 3 Claude as Claude Speed, along with a Q&A rockstar did giving a nod to that by saying his surname 'may or may not' be Speed.) Though, still a mystery, I feel like there are more reasons for that connection than believing James is Jimmy.

    So something I haven’t been able to find any mention of from the 2nd game, is that on the first chapter Awakening after the fisticuffs tutorial, Leo tells you to ‘get patched up’, and if you stay there staring at Leo through the bars instead of going for the meds and the syringe in the adjacent room, Leo will start rambling on about how he wants to take over Danny’s body, and if you look closely you can see a certain texture on him, sorta like he’s glitching. A lot of it was nostalgia cuz it was one of my favorite games as a teen but it was also just a really fun game too. If you enjoy the stealth style at the start and can get used to the somewhat poor shooting controls later in the game, you'll like it. I'd give it 10/10 even with the few issues it has but that's just me, to each their own. It's a bit slower paced than GTA and you have to use stealth, going guns blazing will get you killed immediately. While there are three confirmed cases of him kidnapping and diddling, there are suspected earlier cases as well and a later murder that may or may not be related to him. Here's a little fact about the Manhunt Steam version: Rockstar sells Razor's cracked executable, although masked, and is why it doesn't work on current operative systems. The original crack worked up to Windows XP, but Rockstar wasn't aware of that and the anti-piracy measures are triggered in Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11. Vadim M made a video about this in depth, but in short, Rockstar was so lazy on the Steam release that they took an ancient crack, removed Razor's signature, and didn't bother to test it before selling it on Steam, leading people to believe the game had compatibility issues when in reality they're falling victim of the built-in anti-piracy measures, even though they legally own the game.

    The crazy thing about Donald Love is that even if he ISN'T 'a Manhunt character' technically, he's STILL objectively one of the most fucked up Rockstar characters with possibly the highest canonical body count out of anyone else save for Toni Cipriani himself. His cannibalism was already revealed in 3, but displayed in full glory and amped up past 11 in LCS. But that's not the craziest thing he does: he very casually orchestrates what would've been at the time of the game's story (1998) the single deadliest instance of domestic terrorism the whole country had ever seen. After getting bankrupted by a failed mayoral election campaign -- which included Love conspiring with the Leones to pit the other gangs against each other to aid his propaganda pushes and property value manipulation schemes -- he enlists Toni to rig several high-power bombs beneath specific spots in underground tunnels beneath Fort Staunton, which blows the whole area to smithereens which kills hundreds or thousands of innocents instantly.
    He devises this plan using re-development plans created by his mentor, Avery Carrington (introduced in vice city), which he acquires by murdering a fleeing Avery (although he comments that Avery would've done the same to him had the financial incentive presented itself and would've been proud of his successful assassination and usurping). This makes him even more wealthy than he was prior. Oh, and he is revealed in LCS to stage *morgue parties* where he's heavily implied to engage in necrophilia in addition to the indiscriminate cannibalism. Despite being one of the most abhorrent characters ever introduced, he ultimately ends up escaping all consequences (at least immediate) by disappearing/escaping capture/assassination during the events of GTA 3.
    Such a fascinating, insane character.

      I've been talking about manhunt 3 with a few friends and most agree that with the advanced graphics and society being so sensitive now, cancel culture would jump all over it and it'll never happen. I hope they're wrong and Rockstar has some guts like they did 20 years ago but tbh, I feel like they're no longer the edgy company that they used to be, the money they made from GTA 5 and online made them just another large, soulless AAA gaming company that only cares about getting rich. In GTA 5, they had transgender NPCs when it first came out but woke culture started crying and instead of telling them to get thicker skin, R* actually removed them from the game smh. GTA: The definitive edition did the same garbage, in vice city they changed Phil's confederate flag shirt and removed some of the dialogue involving the Haitians too because of course, people are offended by everything. By the looks of it, Rockstar has turned into a bunch of woke sell outs... 🤦😢

Alternatively though, if we find out that James Earl Cash is actually JEC Jr., his dad or maybe even grandfather could be the JEC that owns the construction company.
    As for the Jimmy Hopkins theory, it’s worth noting that regardless of timing of the school days in theories, Cash was already wanted in San Andreas in 1992.

For Bully they purposefully didn't make it take place in a certain year because they wanted players to be able to connect it to when they were in school, essentially an attempt to make it timeless.

    The use of TV-MK in the final version of Manhunt 2 makes me wonder if it was originally supposed to play a much larger role in the story. Especially with how early on Lamb was supposed to be a religious fanatic presumably hallucinating both the Voice of God and Frisbee. (Plus in the final game Danny mentions how he used to watch TV-MK all the time as a kid.)
    It's possible that Frisbee and "The Voice of God" in the early build could have been the result of TV-MK's influence on Lamb. Ditto for the extreme depravity and violence of the hunters. (Sort of like the broadcast tower from Outlast 2.) Maybe the Project was going to use that to create and activate the sleeper personalities instead of the Pickman Bridge.
    This also brings up the possibility that the Red Kings, Project Militia, Watchdogs, Pervs, and Bloodhounds were all be failed experiments dumped back onto the streets or reassigned as bodyguards like the beta Legion. (Would also explain why the Legion, Militia, and Red Kings wore full masks in the beta, they were either left mutilated or had to conceal themselves while the separate personality was in control.)
    Lastly, in the final game it's insinuated that the Bridge didn't take effect until Danny was exposed to a broadcast at Pickman's lab. Maybe the same was for the hunters as well? (The brainwashing broadcast in the final game flashes images of a couple being intimate, American flags, and phrases like "trust the Project" interspersed with violence. Cue the Pervs and Red Kings who are extremely depraved and obsessed with sex on top of being violent sadists, the Bloodhounds who are raging jingoistic bigots who constantly accuse Daniel of being an "American traitor", and the Project Militia and Watchdogs who place protecting the Project over their own self-preservation.)
    As speculation as to how this could have existed as early as the Frisbee Build, in the scene select Domestic Disturbance is still listed as the 3rd level, and a beta Militia gas mask is used as the background image for the Display option in the main menu. (Adding further to this during the early build menu transition the name "Frisbee and Freaks can be seen briefly flashing on the screen. While in the final game one of the shows that airs on TV-MK is called "Frankie and Freaks." Also one of the images shows what looks like Daniel's arm gripping onto Frisbee in a toolshed with a camera connected to some string presumably filming him.)
    The only thing that doesn't slot neatly into this is Leo since we can assume at that point he was still a separate character. Especially since he performs the same role that Frisbee and The Voice had in earlier stages of development. (Egging on Daniel to commit increasingly gruesome acts)

    • @sharksowneverything1
      @sharksowneverything1 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      From what I can tell, Leo’s role at this point was to be a (real) ex gov/project agent who goes rogue after being disillusioned with their practices and genuinely tries to help Danny, at least at first. He was meant to be a more morally grey character at this point I believe.
      I also believe your point about TV-MK (originally called MK-TV) is accurate, because in the final PS2 and PSP versions of the tv station level Leo actually does mention that project used the station to shoot coded messages into all their agents heads and give them orders that way, these lines don’t exist in the other versions and it’s just glossed over very quickly anyway which seems odd. There’s a lot of concept art from developers focusing on the station and the show’s related to it that, I’m sure it played a much bigger role in the earlier drafts of the story and went in hand with the hunters employed by the project.

    I knew about the previous ideas of Danny being an extremist religious but I´ve never heard or seen nothing related to a puppet to which is insanely fascinating, I recall watching some videos (in spanish) about thar version of the game but they never talked about puppets and some else to add is the fact that they cancellled that version when they acquire the studio (because, yeah, is was a whole different studio separate from Rockstar or at least they have a lot more control over the game until Rockstar stepped in, or that´s what the video said to which they were talking about the development nightmare that was Manhunt 2), so I believe the story would be unfolded like what we can see in Hotline Miami 2 in which there is a character that kinda resemblance the latter in the fact that both share the puppet thing that makes them do stuff like killing random people, the difference being the fact that one do it for clout and the other for religious puposes, check the story of officer Manny Pardo who after seen the previous massacred with people wearing animal mask, he decides to start doing it for clout as they sees them as they were doing it just for fame and he apperantly was a failed ventriloquist and the puppet talks about getting into fame by doing the same things as those people but "better" (Obviously more and more gruesome as the case doesnt get the recognition he wants); I know is really different than what they have planned for Danny in the OG version but still you can see were or even how they could have pulled off.

    I always thought that J.E. Cash was an independent cold-bloodied professional hired killer. Possibly demobbed from military service due to nearly beating to death a commanding officer. To him murder is almost mathematical , it would explain his instinctual knowledge for all kinds of weaponry. He grew up in a violent house hold , a sullen character who would speak seldomnly in a trailer park somewhere just on the outskirts of Las Vanturas. Similar to the protagonist of GTA3 he did a lot of hits for various factions. He was double-crossed by one highrollee who held a lot of clout and could pull the strings. Possibly one Donald Love ( who could also be Mr.Nasty ) who has already demonstrated his degenerate desires which include Recreational cannibalism.

    Stuff that wasn't covered: The guy who voices Starkweather was the original Hannibal Lecter in the film "Manhunter". One of the Smileyz was voice by Glenn Fleshler, who was in True Detective. The Cerberus unit are a nod to Kerberos Panzer Cop, a manga by Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Ooshi which has had a few film adaptations over the years. "Mr Nasty" is a name which isn't allowed to be used on R* Social Club and has been the case since it started during Max Payne 3's initial release (it's not taken, it's literally not allowed). The Manhunt game was found in the victim's house and not the killer's house, evidenced by the legal proceedings involved around the story. There's also some links between The Tramp and some cut content in GTA3 concerning a mission involving uhhh... an ice ream truck and a kill streak or smth? I forget off the top of my head.
    Also, a reminder: anyone using an Innocentz mask in GTAV should be griefed for being a MAP.

      The tramp you're referring to in GTA 3 was Darkel, and he wasn't the same tramp as the one in Manhunt. Rockstar has made some statements about the character and basically, he was originally the character that gave the rampage missions, but some of the missions he gave actually made it to the final game. The ice cream truck thing in particular is a mission in the final game- "I Scream, You Scream", and it's given by El Burro in one of the payphone missions, but it's different from the beta version that Darkel gave because El Burro's version has you using an ice cream truck to lure gangsters to it and then blowing it up, whereas Darkel's version had you luring random pedestrians to it to blow them up.

    So, making this comment during the "Jimmy Hopkins is James Earl Cash" bit.
    Something that a lot of people don't seem to understand, or at the very least, they don't articulate the concept very well, is that there are three distinct GTA continuities. Those being:
    1. The 2D Universe, comprised of Grand Theft Auto, London 1969, London 1961, and Grand Theft Auto 2.
    2. The 3D Universe, comprised of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, Advance, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, and Vice City Stories.
    And 3. The HD Universe, comprised of Grand Theft Auto IV, The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony, Chinatown Wars, Grand Theft Auto V, Grand Theft Online, and the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI (presumably)
    The issue I see a lot of people run into is the failure to clearly understand what this means, so I'll put it here plainly: All three universes are separate from one another. GTA1, 2 and London all exist in the same world and don't interconnect to GTAIII, VC, SA, etc. Nor do any of the 3D games connect to the HD games. They are all separate continuities. And if Rockstar really wanted to, they could go back and make a new game set in one of the two older universes, without changing or affecting the other two. Characters may appear between universes, such as Donald Love, Lazlow Jones and El Burro, the lattermost appearing in all three universes as different characters.
    And the reason people get confused is due in part to Rockstar being somewhat evasive with their information.
    However in spite of this, it has been confirmed that both Manhunt games, as well as Bully take place in the 3D universe. With Manhunt interpreted as having taken place anywhere from a couple years to mere months before the events of GTAIII, and Bully being believed to take place around 2006-2007, long after Cash's rampage in Carcer City. And while this is complete speculation on dates, it's by no means unreasonable to come to such a conclusion with what information we *do* have.

    Why is this game so addictive and interesting? Its not even the violence itself that makes it appealing to me. Its the dark gritty atmosphere of carcer city. These old games like this and silent hill had a really unique way of presenting atmosphere. Desaturated color scheme, along with the dark synth soundtrack that was brilliant. The story isnt thorough on who Cash is or whats going on the background behind everything in this game but the NPCs give off little tid bits that allow you to infer about who he is and the whole story is just a hellish mess, and Cash is the devil among demons. Theyre hunting you, but the reality is you're hunting them. You're the real terror but you still feel like when that music kicks in you're in fear, and when the music cuts off omniously and all you hear is that heartbeat and just gives you this slight sinking feeling. Its just so good.

    Respectfully! For the last time! The story of the Manhunt real-life killing is reported wrong. Manhunt was found in the VICTIM'S bedroom! And yes, the killing might have been drug-related. Supposedly, the two teens even knew each other. For some reason when the story was reported Manhunt was used as a scapegoat for the other teen who did the murder which honestly made no sense being that he didn't even own a copy of Manhunt.
    This was just around the time when certain folks wanted Manhunt to be banned along with other games period. Anything that can be used against was indeed used. Such as false information.
    Great video though! Learn some new things for sure though! 💫💫💫💫💫

    I think the reason why there's such a controversy against violent games, but not violent movies is because you're doing the actions, although it isn't real, your still engaging in it. I can see why some people think this way.
    By the way, I don't really believe in the "VIDEO GAMES CAUSE VIOLENCE AHHH" It likely doesn't.

    • @Blunt_Man
      @Blunt_Man ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It without a doubt doesn't, there's been multiple studies on the topic and none of them found a direct correlation between violent video games and real life violence. Iirc, violent games were actually shown to reduce stress in a lot of normal people and those who are predispositioned to act violently had that in them reguardless of any films, shows and games they saw or played. Someone who's violent irl might enjoy violent media more but it didn't make the person violent, they had that inside them from the start. Like with most things, there's a lot of different traits that are used to identify potentially dangerous people, plenty of normal people could share a few of those traits like enjoying violent media but that doesn't mean anything by itself.
