- This poor hamster did not foresee getting stuck in the running wheel when another hamster decided he wanted to exercise himself.
The video shows a hamster running on the wheel when another hamster jumps on the wheel and tosses the first hamster off. The little guy got stuck on the wheel bars, hanging on while his tormentor speeds around the wheel.
Once he’s finished exercising, the other hamster steps off and the first one jumps back in as if nothing had happened, only this time running slower.

Jamie, it is not animal cruelty. I work with animals and as you could see at the end it was perfectly fine and ran in the wheel again. If the hamster was left to hang there or it was set up, then yes, it would be cruelty, but seeing as it naturally happened then it isn't.

I'm *that type* of pocket pet mom who fears injuries from traditional wheels so I don't let my pet rats have them. I've explained that many a leg has been broken and many a tail crushed, but they're still embarrassed by my helicoptering. Again & again I used to say, "I don't care what all the other rodents get to do; you're MY rats and as long as you live in my house, you'll follow my rules!" But I changed my strategy; now I promise them that they can have a wheel after their second birthday. They seem to accept this, not realizing their lifespan is two years.

Lifespan is actually up to around 36 months, so you're wrong.
You can buy wheels that have no cross bars or anything that they could get squished in. We've always used plastic wheels that mount to the side of the cage.

Actually this is why you don't use a wheel with a spreader bar. If you get the kind that's mesh, and had the stand attached one at the back (like how normal plastic wheels have it) it's fine. I use wire mesh wheels because my animals chew up the plastic, which isn't good for them. As long as you get the mesh wheels WITH OUT the spread bar they're safe
Yes but still no! You're right yRwami, mesh wheels give them bumblefoot. I disagree that wood is ideal for the wheel though, because it's absorbent and will become pathogenic and chewed by the hamster faster than a solid plastic wheel. So, solid plastic wheel is my vote.

That wheel could have broken the hamsters body in half. We dont use those open wired wheels anymore, we use the plastic ones the fully closed ones on one side is closed off and only the other side open, no small holes and especially no wires. Their feet or tail (if mouse) can get caught and cause injury if using the wired wheels.
Anyone notice that there's one WHEEL? There are three hamsters in that cage meaning that two would try to run on it, because with my experience having a hamster was that they love to run, so don't get pissed that the mesh is the problem because obviously it's the many hamsters in that tiny ass cage.

I'm not just mad about the fact that that hamster could have gotten seriously injured, but I'm also mad about the fact that its a MESH WHEEL. Mesh wheels are so inhumane. They will give hamsters and other small pets bumble foot, and small pets with long tails will get their tails stuck in the wheel.

Bedding for example, a huge bag of pine shavings is 5 bucks while a tiny bag of paper bedding is 20.
