Christmas 1953: I come down and my grandpa has my new Lionel train set assembled and running around the base of the Christmas tree. One of my best memories!
There you go Harrison, get a couple silver passenger cars with those Super chiefs, and you got a classic 1950s Christmas tree train set to run under your tree this year. Was glad my friend stopped in and showed me this on his phone. Your purchases were Awesome.
Great video! Growing up I remember about 2002 or so receiving a Lionel passenger set with the same A-A set of locomotives in NYC livery. Within the powered unit there will be a 9v battery that will allow the railsounds to remain on through power interruptions like switching directions. It also allows the locomotive to play through an engine "cooldown" cycle after the locomotive is stopped. Almost time for me to set the trains back up again for Christmas!
My dad passed last year and my mom just gave me his old train sets I have one running around the Christmas tree now , while I have never really been into Trains like my dad was I am an RC guy and my channel has over 100 RC related videos on it , I just subscribed to you after finding your videos and I hate to say it but I think i am digging the train hobby ! Love your repair videos , like you I enjoy getting neglected vintage models running again , in my opinion the challenge is half the fun .
Harrison, those A units are FT's,and the B is a FB3,or a FB7,so you have to go by road number! That GG-1 brought back memories,in the 1960's,those engines dominated the main lines, and they rode like the wind! A train from Pittsburgh[diesel],
I watched this video and pressed the like plus left a comment but upon returning to your site some hours later both the like and comment were gone so here we go again. The F units look new so great purchase and the GG1 is one of my favorites also. Knowing how vast your backlog of repairs is you should get to the GG1 repair this month in 2026, lol. Happy Thanksgiving if that is a thing in Canada and have a great weekend. Jersey Bill
Hey Harrison, I've been watching your videos for well over a year, and TH-cam wasn't letting me have an account for a long time, but I finally managed to get it to work now! Anyways, I'm starting my own HO Scale layout now. Just got to get a good layout and stuff. Great videos, especially the ones when you repair those complete junked locomotives that can't even sit on the track. Thanks for brightening every single gloomy day I have!
I’m looking forward to your GG1 repair video. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with the parts of the e-unit and how to service them. Also, your Santa Fe set probably has a horn. Push the “whistle / direction” switch on your ZW toward whistle while the engine is running.
Que chulada mi Harrison, encontraste trenes escala O, muy antiguos. Me encantan las Santa Fe Super Chief. Excelente visita a la tienda de antigüedades.
One good thing about O Gauge, especially from the post war era, they can take a lot of punishment before needing serious repairs. Most of the stuff I find in the junk boxes at shows often just need a good cleaning of the shell, a replacement bulb and some cleaning of the brushes and they run like new.
I highly suggest holding that gg1 by the trucks The stripes on that are in really good shape so I’d strongly encourage you to do everything you can to keep it that way
Hi, Harrison! Very nice video! I really liked how the Lionel O scale Santa Fe set looks gorgeous, and that's also stunning how you manage to find them soon after a set with the B unit only! I'm also happy to see that you are still doing the giveaways and I hope one day to receive something american that belonged to you. Greetings from Italy. Carlo.
Those Santa Fe F units are some of my favourite American diesels, a sweet purchase, same with the postwar GG1. It's fortunate F units are so common in H0, if I really want to get a Santa Fe F7, I can find plenty for cheap. I personally have a love-hate relationship with O gauge, it's mighty expensive (And takes up a lot of space, not something we have a lot of in Europe!) and the detail leaves a lot to be desired if you're buying new (ahem, Lionel) stuff, but their older postwar stuff is so much fun, I can't blame people for liking it, heck, I own some Lionel stuff myself (albeit it's just a modern Lionchief set)
Great video…you seem to have the luck with used stuff and having them run off the bat…nothing like a good root-around in an antique store…never know what surprises might be there…like the giveaway too…sorry I missed the Husky switcher…cheers from Orleans…
Still have my dads Santa Fe train just like this. Same exact transformer too. He bought it the 50s right after getting out of the army. Cost like 800 bucks in todays money. Of course it still works. Light bulb replaced once.
Those Santa Fe FTAs look good with the good with the postwar F3B. Sorta ironic that the F3 prototype is newer than the FTs, but the model F3 is at least four decades older than the FT models
The GG-1 shouldn't be too hard to get going. Those old Lionel engines are very simple and robust, but age does take a toll on them. Pay attention to the fingers in the reversing unit. They will corode and can be bent over time which would explain the lack of operation. Good luck, nice purchases, and enjoy.
My fiance grew up in wells and we still live nearby in NH. Next time your in the area you should check out Union Street Antiques in Rochester, NH Its about 30 minutes from Wells. There's a vendor with a huge selection of everything from G scale to N scale.
I love looking for model trains at my local thrift stores. My most recent find from a few days ago, a HO Bachmann 0-6-0 SantaFe 2126 for only 8 USD! It's in its box and It works but it needs to be re-lubricated. There are two stores near me that have a whole bunch of rolling stock from the same era that I will hopefully be picking up when they go on sale for only a few dollars each.
A Lionel shop dude told me to always oil all the old stuff when purchased off the dusty shelf. Car bearings and loco gears. Mechanical reversers probably need a check too.
Hey there, I stumbled across your channel somewhat recently and absolutely love your videos. It's wonderful getting to see old model trains being respectfully restored, and your own videos have inspired me to get into model railroading myself! I'm interested in your giveaway as it would give quite a good headstart to my own collection. Keep up the good work with your channel!
The 2332 GG1 is, when working, a very smooth, quiet running locomotive. Unfortunately it also has very poor traction, so it can't pull much. I would say the pricetag on it is a little on the high side for the condition yours is in, but when you showed the underside I noticed you can see a red brush plate on the motor. Lionel only made the red brush plates early on in the postwar era- they sometimes crop up in 726 Berkshires and 671 and 2020 turbines. I believe it's much less typical to see them in a GG1, but while the red brush plates do add value, they aren't going to add hundreds to the value of an engine. Note that the 2332 GG1 has a horn, but it doesn't sound very impressive- it sounds very similar to the buzzing of an E-Unit, and sounds different depending how much power is going to the track. It's just an electromagnetic coil attached to a plastic 'resonating' chamber, to amplify the noise. I have a 2332 which I repaired, it may not pull much but it's very pretty and it runs as smooth as silk.
Harrison so that big model you found is a Lionel template locomotive, Lionel was into the template trains back then. Oh also that Santa Fe f unit set, not them dummy, but the other is actually a Lionel starter set they offer few years back
I’ve also seen ‘old’ trains in antique shops and malls--typically Lionel, Marx, or Flyer. They are either eras I don’t collect or are above my price point. But among HO stuff, while I’ve seen it less, it seems to be older and less interesting (I’m most interested in 70s-80s locos and rolling stock). Congrats to your winner, I’d forgotten about this batch of HO goodies. I especially loved the Ecologie car. I definitely get a kick out of French language on Canadian vehicles and signs (despite being an American who doesn’t know French), and have since I made two trips up to Vancouver BC in my teens. I had thought the pandemic trip you and your friends made to the railroad museum in Montreal was really cool. While I have seen and been intrigued by various CN, CP, Soo, and Ontario Northlands cars on the American Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroads here in Oregon, I’ve never seen anything in person with the French logos and schemes (nor anything from Mexico either, alas). Anyway, thanks again! Keep on train shopping, fixing locos, and running trains!
Yeah, something really unfortunate must have happened with that GG-1 given that postwar Lionel stuff has a well-deserved reputation of being built to the tankiest possible standards and able to run with just a light cleaning at most.
No way what are the odds. I bought a F7 set of ho scale trains it has baseball livery mine is a EMD F7S A&B set with the Houston Astros livery. I did the research mine was made by Bachmann but decorated by Hawthorne village models I bought mine from eBay but from Ron at Classic Model Trains, you and Ron are my go to repair channels. I built a new 4ftx8ft layout table and also Bachmann nickel silver ez track. and Atlas flex track, 24ft of cork roadbed, nails, and insulated joiner's. I want a round house on this but need to save for one.
Huh. I was given a full Super Chief train set (!) for Christmas in about 1963. IIRC it was a battery-powered locomotive and two cars - this was in the UK, BTW. I never forgot that diesel!
(Continued),train from Pittsburgh, would come into Harrisburg, two hours late, change to a GG-1,and arrive in New York[Penn Station],20 minutes late! All out speed! Thank you 😇 😊!
I got a question: I got a 1986-1987 G scale New bright Christmas Train with the track for $5, problem is that there is rust and corrosion problems on the tender where the C batteries go in. What should I do? I don't want to trash it. I just want to save it and have it run again.
Can I turn an old silver streak tyco into a dummy? I got it and it did not run. We tried to fix it but there was no hope. It is such a cool paint job so I thought I would make it a dummy. I can figure out how to take the motor apart so just wondering if that would even work. Thanks
Yes, that should be very easy. Just remove the two gears above the wheels and disconnect the wires going to the motor. You can leave the wiring intact for the light if you want to keep it lit while you run stuff.
Thank you so much big help! But sorry to bother u but it all worked but it’s really heavy for my loco to push and pull. Any suggestions. If not it’s ok. Thx!
Regarding the Lionel ZW transformer. you should get into the habit of using the little lever next to the power control arm to cycle the e unit. There is a carbon roller on the control arm that wears down and then the roller frame will scrape on the coil possibly damaging it. Pull the ZW cover removing the 4 screws and inspect the four carbon rollers. The ZW is an excellent old school transformer but should probably not be used with modern era locomotives since the circuit breaker is relatively slow to engage. A modern breaker can be installed or placed in the circuit.
Hey Harrison, I was wondering given your expertise if you’d be able to help diagnose what’s wrong with one of my trains, I have an old Lionel 2-4-2 scout that runs near flawlessly in reverse but it barely moves when going forward and I don’t know what’s wrong with it
I'm no expert on Lionel but I'm guessing you have an issue with your e-unit. There are metal contacts inside it which wear out over time and the one which delivers power going forward might be worn out. You can replace it or just do an E -unit bypass which will fix it however you will lose reverse.
Very nice finds. I myself would have picked up the Mantua diesel too lol. That type only had the dual brass flywheels and can motor not the power torque. The one store I like is in Palmer Mass. Depending on what you're looking at the price is can be high on some things but it's one dealer that has mostly train stuff from Lionel to HO scale and maybe some n scale. Those other various dealers there that have their stuff on display same way as that antique store you went to they just placed their items in their section put the price on it and that's it. However the one I go to in Jewett City Connecticut how far is that dealer there has everything from o gauge Lionel American flyer ho scale n scale G scale too. Plus the guys really nice and it gives you a deal on a lot of things. Most of my locomotives came from that dealer and every single one of them even though they need maybe a little bit of oil run beautiful. In fact that's one thing I should do this coming up Sunday is check out what he's got maybe I can find some track for my brother so he can run his trains.
4:28 it is a EMD f3 or f7 built from 1949 to 1953 not vapeur ..but electro-diesel engine EMD detroit 2 strokes 12 cylinders engines. Combined to electric engine EMD brand for" Electro motor diesel" owned by GM
SMT, I have a question regarding a repair, today I got a mahano 0-4-0 today, doesn't move, just the light works and the motor makes noise, how do I fix it, it's my first time.
I just got a classic Lionel set from 1973. It’s the golden state arrow set. I got it today at an antique store, and the condition of the cars looked very promising. Unfortunately, the engine did not work. The set was missing some track, its transformer, and one of its cars, but I was able to manage with a transformer I already have. As for the engine, the E unit engages and works well, so do the lights, but the motor does absolutely nothing. I checked and made sure everything was wired right, tested the conductivity of everything, cleaned the commutator (seems to work in your videos), and did some other cleaning, but still no motor movement. It doesn’t even try- no sparking, vibrating, or even humming. The entire engine needs cleaning, like the wheels could use a little cleaning but I decided to not put much work into it if it doesn’t run. Any suggestions?
Have you checked to make sure the brushes are seating correctly. If they aren't touching or have limited tension the model won't run. Otherwise it's probably the coils but that's rare.
@ I will check that. If that’s not the case, then it could either be the coils like you said, the E unit drum is dirty, or a connection in the E unit drum is bad.
@@SMTMainline Hey, checking in again. I was able to fix it! Turns out, two of the fingers that ride on the E-unit drum were bent out. After bending them in, it works! Only problem now is, it’s a *terrible* runner.
Christmas 1953: I come down and my grandpa has my new Lionel train set assembled and running around the base of the Christmas tree. One of my best memories!
Hi Harrison, there's nothing quite like a good rummage in an antique shop on a miserable day. short but sweet video. 👍
Thanks 👍
There you go Harrison, get a couple silver passenger cars with those Super chiefs, and you got a classic 1950s Christmas tree train set to run under your tree this year.
Was glad my friend stopped in and showed me this on his phone. Your purchases were Awesome.
I already have one, just four more to go.
Great video! Growing up I remember about 2002 or so receiving a Lionel passenger set with the same A-A set of locomotives in NYC livery. It also allows the locomotive to play through an engine "cooldown" cycle after the locomotive is stopped. Almost time for me to set the trains back up again for Christmas!
I got the Santa Fe version in 2004. Very first train. Yeah that particular sound unit is actually really decent.
For sure. I like opening something up, not knowing what the problem will be.
Harrison, those A units are FT's,and the B is a FB3,or a FB7,so you have to go by road number! That GG-1 brought back memories,in the 1960's,those engines dominated the main lines, and they rode like the wind! A train from Pittsburgh[diesel],
Awesome video! thanks for releasing on US Thanks giving day - look forward to your Christmas Eve show!
The green locomotive I think is the coolest that thing looks awesome
The small black locomotive at the end I had as a kid. What good times playing for hours!
My apologies, there was a copyright issue I had to get sorted out with my new Universal music licence so I had to re-upload it.

You hit a home run, the green PRR is a great find
I can't wait to work on it/
I’m looking forward to your GG1 repair video. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with the parts of the e-unit and how to service them.
Also, your Santa Fe set probably has a horn. Push the “whistle / direction” switch on your ZW toward whistle while the engine is running.
most times the old transformers like that wont run them without changing and modifying it to diodes. easily done and well documented online.
I think I need to rewire my controller to use the whistle, I haven't been able to get it working so far.
I haven't seen you for a while, and so it was great to see a good video for a change !!
Welcome back. Do you find the regular ones are bad? 😂
This was awesome you put so much effort into those videos keep up the great work!
Thanks, this one took a lot to make but I like the result. I appreciate hearing that.
Que chulada mi Harrison, encontraste trenes escala O, muy antiguos.
Me encantan las Santa Fe Super Chief.
Excelente visita a la tienda de antigüedades.
It is so much fun to got to antique stores and I see you have been aflicted by that same bug. Excelent vidro my friend
I can't get enough of them either.
Best thanksgining ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats on the win Jessica! enjoy the tinkering :)

Most of the stuff I find in the junk boxes at shows often just need a good cleaning of the shell, a replacement bulb and some cleaning of the brushes and they run like new.
Yeah, they're really built to last!
Another great find!
I'm glad you liked it!
I highly suggest holding that gg1 by the trucks
The stripes on that are in really good shape so I’d strongly encourage you to do everything you can to keep it that way
Nah, I'd give it a flat black CR makeover.
Hi, Harrison! Very nice video! I really liked how the Lionel O scale Santa Fe set looks gorgeous, and that's also stunning how you manage to find them soon after a set with the B unit only! You just never know what you will find at the antique store. This was a good purchase. Nice video. From Texas
That's the best part. I once found a large lot of stuff for only $28 bucks.
@@SMTMainline Very cool.
Great video…you seem to have the luck with used stuff and having them run off the bat…nothing like a good root-around in an antique store…never know what surprises might be there…like the giveaway too…sorry I missed the Husky switcher…cheers from Orleans…
Generally these things are pretty good about starting but given the GG1 failed to start it's still hit or miss
Still have my dads Santa Fe train just like this. Same exact transformer too. He bought it the 50s right after getting out of the army. Cost like 800 bucks in todays money.
Of course it still works.
Light bulb replaced once.
That's amazing, they have stood the tests of time so well.
We're going down to Kittery, ME from Ontario in the near future and will be checking our these two stores for sure.
Awesome, I hope you enjoy!
Those Santa Fe FTAs look good with the good with the postwar F3B. Sorta ironic that the F3 prototype is newer than the FTs, but the model F3 is at least four decades older than the FT models
Hey SMT looks like a good lot you got there keep up the good work
You are the Greatest.
I bet with a bit of oil and cleaning that GG1 will come right back to life.
I love old trains and I have a little collection of my own but I would love to have that gg-1
0:53 those Lionell engines are pre-war standard gauge so I wouldn’t recommend getting them because standard gauge is between G gauge and O gauge
Serenity, we have a runner! Cheers from eastern TN

Can't wait for the GG 1 repair video
It should be interesting.
I had the house you picked up at 1:29. I believe it’s a set made by Pola and it must be from the early eighties.
The GG1 should be pretty easy to fix. Clean the contacts on the E unit drum and fingers first, and that may very well solve the problem.
Oh wow, love seeing some lionel
These Lionel Scouts (with the plastic chassis) were notorious for teething troubles including fidgety E-units that randomly switched direction.
Now I'm really glad I didn't buy it.
Also the pickups for the dummy FT-A was for the lights, and Lionel did indeed reuse powered unit parts for the dummy units
Those are cool locomotives!
Thank you SMT you are the best
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed the video!
A Lionel shop dude told me to always oil all the old stuff when purchased off the dusty shelf. Car bearings and loco gears. Mechanical reversers probably need a check too.
That's some good advice.
I love the gopro camera at the end apart from the derail 😂
Nothing wrong with mixing rolling stock...I've seen some wild mixes in prototype situations. Nice purchases!
Harrison amazing finds I did like the Red Sox engine.
Very nice 2 Lionel locomotive hauls you got from the antique store!
Hello Harrison I like that orange boxcar and I especially like that o-4-0 steam engine

0:33 how beautiful they are bro ❤
I believe restoration decals are available for the gg1

I'm not sure if I have it wired correctly, the smaller arm doesn't seem to do anything.
Hey Harrison, I was wondering given your expertise if you’d be able to help diagnose what’s wrong with one of my trains, I have an old Lionel 2-4-2 scout that runs near flawlessly in reverse but it barely moves when going forward and I don’t know what’s wrong with it

Little bit of cleaning and that b unit will blend in nicely!
on your gg1 the reverse unit should atleast buzz on those even when in neutral IIRC So its probably seized and will need cleaned and loosened up.
Yeah, I think it's just been sitting too long to move. I bet a bit of work will get it going again.
Nice haul harrison
4:28 it is a EMD f3 or f7 built from 1949 to 1953

EMD brand for" Electro motor diesel" owned by GM
SMT, I have a question regarding a repair, today I got a mahano 0-4-0 today, doesn't move, just the light works and the motor makes noise, how do I fix it, it's my first time.
I do agree, I love O scale too
I just got a classic Lionel set from 1973.
Harrison I’m getting the Lionel nyc water level freight set
You need to get the Lionel app so you can do the bell and horn
I wonder if it would work with a set from the late 90s.
@ The engines would probably go boom💥 lol 😂
@@wyatttrainworld I think so, it's too modern lol.
My favorite train I own is a santa fe F-7 A unit with a matching B unit
It’s raining in NY today, the video felt perfect
Nice video smt 😊
Perfect timing SMT, you make my day with locomotives 🚂🚋🚋
Freight behind an ABA Super Chief lash-up?! HERESY!!
I only have one of the passenger cars so I though it would look worse.. .
I have a GG 1 in HO gauge and I'm trying to figure out if it had it's own rolling stock
I think it just used regular PRR and later Amtrak passenger cars.
Looks like you have the track that I can't seem to know enough about it To use it and I don't think it works with my logo
Are you having a contest this year for best village setup.
