  • Here are the basics of Bagua seen through the lens of the Cheng style. Though all styles are, ultimately, Bagua each branch has its special skills and requirements. In this DVD Sun himself shows basic hand positions, leg positions, locomotion and each, in the final section basics of the Bagua sword. The basics are, of course, essential but the bonus here is to listen to those little details informed by a lifetime of Bagua experience. These are the questions that you would ask an instructor over and over for exactness and structure. Of particular interest is the Cheng style of movement with a gliding steps and, in some instances, a very low to the ground leg position..

    Many of his students are very famous and high level teachers and competitors. I have meet Master Sun and his insights into Ba Gua Zhang are phenomenal. He is recognized by the Chinese Government as a cultural treasure due to his ability, lineage, and dedication to the art. His skill level at 80 is still very high. In this video is his student Master Lily Li who is currently in Singapore teaching Ba Gua Zhang.

      Anybody "recognized" by the CCP can't possibly be allowed to provide complete transmission nor applications. Not after so many boxing masters were murdered or humiliated during the cultural revolution purges

    I really disagree - you should never drop your palm strike when hitting. You will break fingers attempting it this way. A strong open palm strike speed is based on stance - coming from your right heel and turning your hips. The arm is an after thought.

    Wrong. Sorry. I like some of the ideas about the movements he's explaining but the structure is completely nonexistent. The proof lies in the walk. Where he describes mud-wading or mud walking, particularly in Cheng style, the rear heel is never raised, creating a cross-linked connection felt at the opposite shoulder as the foot is being picked up. The feeling of walking the circle is somewhat like riding a bicycle but being pulled along the whole time in complete control of your position and stability which is a feeling that cannot be achieved by lifting the rear heel and falling into your front foot. Classic Wushu. Real Cheng Bagua has ultimate depth and maintains contact points to ensure stability and advantageous positions in a wrestling match as Cheng Ting Hua was a champion of Shuaijiao and could not afford to compromise balance or structure even momentarily due to the foreword weight commitment of the average walker based on falling foreword into the heels, trusting that the ground will be there instead of a leg sweep or reep. Good Bagua has total root in the sense of constant connection, great Bagua has magic in the sense of independently connected bodily alignments leading or lagging perceivable connections while spiralling up/down, foreword/backward and constantly changing one step or two before the next move of the fight, thus creating the illusion to the opponent of fighting smoke and jumping into the rapids of a river simultaneously without knowing how to swim.

    • @lokanoda
      @lokanoda 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How would you know? Who's to say that the heel couldn't be raised? Maybe within the Cheng style there are different lineages as well..

    • @leonpse
      @leonpse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree, but your explanation is very complicated. You can't do it and think about everything you stated. Qi movement will be broken. Need a more simple explanation using just one example of a similar movement done in daily life.

      He was taught by two Chengs , a disciple of Cheng ting Hua and he is from the Cheng Village . This is lower basin stepping which very few people can do well. This is to develop the body and athleticism. It is a misconception that Cheng Style is about wrestling because Cheng was a wrestler it has lots of striking. I met Master Sun and discussed several points with him as well as his student. When doing Cheng style combatively the step is shorter faster and higher. Cheng footwork has a moving root.
