For those of us who grew up with the Carpenters, this is not just stunning but as Tori's real voice this has to be as close to an act of God as one can get. I have heard Tori sing covers, a Capella and one new song. This is all her real voice. There can be no other explanation to this very real magic we have witnessed.
I haven’t heard a voice like this in over 40 years. Tori Hulub has an amazing and beautiful voice just like Karen Carpenter. She’s also quite a beautiful young lady! Thank you for sharing.
I’m 67 and I felt the same way. I literally felt like I went down a time tunnel and I was 15 again. What an incredible thing this is, she gave us such a gift.
Exactly! I was always a Karen Carpenter fan, even back then when it wasn't considered cool by a lot of my teenaged peers. But listening to Tori sing this cover last March instantly transported me back to the first time I heard Karen's magical voice on the radio. It was a little freaky, to be honest! And, what was most surprising, was how much it moved me emotionally. You said it all - it's a gift!
Like you I first fell in love with Karen Carpenter's voice as a teenager, I'm 65, but watching this I don't feel like I've gone back, I feel like she's come back. It's the strangest feeling it really is.
I've heard Tori's version hundreds of times and still gives me goosebumps and a tear as soon as I hear the first sentence. Your reaction and facial expression to the first sentence was priceless! Thanks.
Maria! You almost cried? I cry every time I hear this, and that's already been two-dozen times at least. Tori's a big admirer of Karen and has incorporated nuances of Karen's singing into her own style. But that's not all. If you go to her site, she has myriad covers of not only the Carpenters, but many other artists. One that's really striking is her cover of an Olivia Newton-John song. Olivia had a soprano range, as opposed to Karen's contralto. Tori effects a breathier, lighter sound to her voice and pulls off a really good doppelganger of Olivia's voice. Know what else? Before she teamed with Jim to do this, she created, on her own, many of the covers at her site (which comprised overdubbed parts) on multitrack recording decks and pro-level sequencing software. But back to her voice, the thing that has me gobsmacked on her is her on-pitch singing and her seemingly endless vibrato. Most singers I've heard can't do that. She's incredible.
I am sitting here laughing and crying. I had the exact same reaction as you. It is unreal. Reincarnation? A miraculous glitch in the matrix? What a wonderful thing to happen! We are so blessed
Incredible ... music today can't touch this talent and quality of the song ... REAL MUSIC ... a song that actually was written with emotion ... goodness ...
Tori is 22 years old in 2024. And yes this is the Carpenters original arrangement. Richard was taken aback by her talent and invited her to his home and to a special event at the Carpenter's Presbyterian Church in Downey CA
Tori turned 21 in early September. It was Ksenia who visited Richard at home. Tori met Richard at the 55th last night, in the Embassy Suites Hotel, after his Q&A.
Oh my goodness. I want to see Tori in concert because she sounds so very much like the vocalist I have loved since the 70's and 80's: Karen Carpenter. The band that played in this video needs to get together and work on all of the Carpenter's songs and then along with Tori, go on tour throughout the U.S. rekindling the Carpenter's wonderful and timeless music. I honestly believe that they would perform to sold out concert halls with thousands and thousands of adoring Carpenter's fans like me. Just do it!
For those indicating that there will never be another Karen Carpenter and that is indeed true. That being fairly stated please keep in mind even at this early stage there will never ever be another Tori Holub.
When Tori started making TikTok videos she didn’t realize she could do these harmineys. The first time she sung these parts and recorded them she said it gave her chills. How awesome is that.
Tori’s voice is extremely similar. She’s a Carpenters super-fan and collector. Yet her first love was The Beatles. Then she moved to the 70’s in her learning.
I actually do tear up when I hear Tori. Karen was perhaps the most gentle, delicate and rich voice we've ever had. And Tori is dang near Karen-reincarnate, voice-wise. And as a 62-year-old, I can say Dang, I grew up with great music from people who had real talent.
Oh. My. God. I know whose Christmas album I'M getting!! I'm 64 and this IMMEDIATELY sent me back not only to this song but her Christmas music, in my top 5 favorites ever for that genre.
Tori has three Christmas songs on iTunes and the streamers. Merry Christmas, Darling (OMG!), My Christmas Dreams and her own original given to her by the writers Steve Eaton and Donnie Demers “Christmas Again.” Oh that Steve guy! He wrote “All You Get From Love Is A Love Song” for who?
I cried before you did. Tori's not a kid - 21 - and the weird thing is she only got into singing in the last few years, and as far as I know has only performed publicly twice... once was in a restaurant and once was in a church. She's a natural talent, with that resonant low register that is almost a male range, and a weightless high register that can decorate a song with runs and flourishes when she wants to. I don't know if she will be a star, but she could walk into any studio and get plenty of gigs as a backing singer. There's a good career in session work. Glenn Campbell - before he was a superstar - was a studio guitarist-singer. And Mariah Carey, Cher and Sheryl Crow were all backup vocalists to begin with. I guess we'll see what the future holds for Tori, but her laid-back style is probably not suited to being a chart-topping pop singer with today's hit music. I'm pretty sure she'll do very well one way or another.
I had the exact same reaction as you when I first heard this. It is her real voice -- no pitch correction or auto tune. It brought back so many memories for me when I was younger. This girl has brought back that wonderful feeling that Karen imparted to everyone when she sang.
Hi Maria, I was considering requesting this as I had discovered Tori about 4 months ago. But I'm glad Joe got to it quickly. Tori I think is a generational talent. The only way I can describe her voice is timeless. The Carpenters performances are impactful as you just witnessed, but she does cover other artists and even has an original on her TH-cam page. Her voice is outstanding and she claims that she will never replace Karen Carpenter and is not trying to. There are nuances of her voice that are different but if you weren't listening closely you may not notice. What you heard here was not an imitation but her natural voice and tone. This particular performance is the masterpiece it is because of collaboration with Jim wilkas, a genius audio engineer and producer. He coordinated all of the audio, video, instrumentation, and backup harmonies that created this work of art. As you can see, he is a master of authenticity. I really enjoyed your reaction to Tori and I agree with you. It was probably the most profound reaction from you I've ever seen and I loved it.
Hello Maria! This young woman impressed me so so much like I can realize on your face too.. She has a smooth voice like Karen and I ve got big eyes and ears whèn I first listened. Love always your reactions very much. Take care und God bless you...Greetings from 🇩🇪❤
I first cried for Karen Carpenter after just learning of her death at a young age when I'm well over 40. Now I cried for Karen after hearing Tori's cover ...
Ive must have watched people react to Tori singing this a gazillion times and I'm close to tears every time i see that initial reaction, Your was perfect 😄
My new favorite saying is now, “You have my attention.” That was a first after all these months. Thank you, Maria! It was perfect. I’ve seen it all and this is a first and just so from the heart. Steve, I know what you mean.
It is truly mindblowing! What makes is extra cool is to listen to Tori's cover on one device and Karen's original on another at the same time; listening to each device on opposite sides of your head like you're listening in stereo (or separate earbuds; one for each device). I DARE you to tell the difference! Tori is THAT close, it's so unreal. Definitely chill inducing...
David, I’m linking Eduard’s mashup video. There are 3 in total on two songs. It’s nuts. Joe th-cam.com/video/WrpiD6iPE0g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zm-oGaZMI9j9jLtz .
You have the absolute best reaction to this video. I did also tear up hearing her sing. Growing older I lament the talent, the once in a lifetime talent that we have lost to time or tragedy. Every now and then, though, we are blessed, yes blessed to get to hear a talent who has been gifted in a similar way to what was lost. For that, I am truly grateful.
Just discovered the video yesterday. The first line gives me chills that I have to check it several times to see that it was another person who was singing and not karen herself.
According to close friends of Karen, her mother, who was a perfectionist and made it obvious that Richard was her favorite child, took Karen to a weight loss doctor when she was just 17. Karen lost weight and liked the way she looked, but then the eating disorder kicked in. When asked about her later on in interviews,Richard and his mother would “circle the wagons”,shoot down any questions/concerns about her weight loss, and claim the family had it under control. Karen was literally starving for her mother’s love. Makes my heart hurt to think of how much emotional pain she must’ve been in.
Can't add much more to what those who have already commented, other than that I thoroughly enjoyed your genuine and heartfelt reaction to the wonderful gift that Tori is sharing. I would only emphasize that as much as she has similar vocal qualities with Karen, their voices are actually rather distinct. Tori herself has adamantly stated that there will never be anyone else like Karen, but as you and many others have observed, Tori herself is incredibly special in her own way. And I would wholeheartedly agree.
Yep, The first time I heard Tori I was convinced she was miming, it is uncanny and I like you got emotional, I was born mid 60's and grew up listening to the Carpenters.
There's no power nor smile in Tori's voice like there always was in Karen's legendary delivery. Every word was so crisp, so pure and bursting with emotion whereas Tori is bland though she mimics well, she doesn't sound exactly like anyone but herself! People hear what they want to hear when it comes to these vocal imitators. Some of the Korean women do a far better job at this than Tori. There's a woman in Thailand who sounds exactly like Karen but she is also boring and has no power like Karen did.
I love your reaction . Mom and dad had them playing in the house like ALL the time . A bit before my time but The Carpenters are as Americana as apple pie . What a flood of memories . Great reaction, best I luck from Texas !
I too was blown away of Tori's beautiful voice. I too was very moved by her rendition of the song. My question is this...does anybody out there know if Richard Carpenter has seen this video? He needs to see Tori sing! Does Richard have a social media account? A website?
Hi Vince, Richard met Tori in person at the Carpenters 55th in April. If you go back and see details of her cover of Georgia On My Mind, exact timing will become more clear. Look who produced it and what he wrote with whom 😉. We all hope something will happen. Until then “Suddenly” dropped today.
If you want more detailed analysis on Torrey Holub. Check out another Channel called Wings of Pegasus. They do a voice analysis. Tori did not use autotune or pitch correction. And to respond to the comment above. She did a performance at a jazz club in St Paul called Crooners a couple months ago. She's sang this song with piano accompaniment only. Apparently it was the first time she sang in front of anybody. It's also on TH-cam.
…and the second time was at the 55th. I was there for that one and recorded Tori with my iPhone. It’s on my channel. I also link all the official and unofficial recordings from the 55th in my pinned comment. It was magic! I estimate 80% had no idea who Tori was and what they were about to hear. ❤
There was a biopic that said Karen started her anorexia when a music critic called her "pudgy", but it is a very complicated psychological disorder that may or may not have a trigger. Tori has shorts, original "Carpenters" songs, and tributes to other great ladies on her website. She claims to not be a singer, but an audio engineer. Could have fooled me
She’s definitely a singer, her phrasing is “aspiring” audio engineer. As an example check out her recent “Something In Your Eyes (Studio Version)” with Drew’s piano, she did all that. To my knowledge, she gave herself the “Producer” credit, for the first time. Long overdue if you ask me. Joe
She also does with her voice, the background singers. Marvelous huuh? She is 21. She also sounds like Olivia Neton John. have been a Carpenters fan since their inception. Am 82. Enjoyed your analysis and video.
I can't blame you for crying It made me cry too I grew up with the Carpenters and it's amazing how she sounded exactly like Karen Carpenter This gave me chills
What a great reaction, probably the best to date from any reactor, to this phenomenal cover by twenty year old Tori. These musicians have collaborated to this masterpiece from all over the globe and put together by the genius Jim Wilkas. Tori has a lot of shorts on TH-cam but well worth a look. If I were being picky about Tori's voice in this video, she's taken away the sharpness that Karen's voice portrayed in the 1970's original and somehow smoothed out the pitch, which I find pleasing to the ear. If you didn't know, you would be forgiven for thinking this was actually the Carpenters.
Peter, I’m going to agree but amend it to a 3 way tie. Sarah Dengler and The Tenor are with Maria. I just commissioned “Eyes” (Studio Version) that honor is held by Tee Spicer and probably won’t be vanquished. I did warn Maria about this one, though. Joe
I would probably second or third that assessment depending on how it fits in with Joe's additions. Maria's reaction was spontaneous and ultra genuine. Love seeing people respond to Tori's precious gift. Doesn't get old.
@@SAnnun-hs1io Steve, you are correct. It doesn’t get old and Maria’s “you have my attention” is priceless ❤️ that was a first. The Tenor, never judge a book by its cover. I didn’t. I offered “Eyes” next, probably The Medley after unless someone steps in. 🤷🏻♂️
@@pedromancenithe3rd I originally had Tee react to my live at the church video. It was of course, nice. When Tori dropped the SV I told Tee to put that one on hold. She already did it in the live stream. I was right. The SV was the Gold. It took Tee about 15 minutes to compose herself after this. Impossible was strong, also. Yet to drop but SV reigns supreme. I also gave Tee, Harvey Stig’s remastered Superstar. Oh boy. Tee is sure I’m trying to kill her. 🤣
Tori and Jim do a great cover of the Burt Bacharach & Hal David medley - which The Carpenters did on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1970 outdoors at The Walter Reed Hospital. Dan Wesley posted a Tori video of the "It's Impossible" (Perry Como) about 2 weeks ago. Tori's channel has many short covers of The Carpenters songs. Checkout Tori's "Merry Christmas, Darling (audio only) and Georgia On My Mind (audio only).
I have heard a few covers by different ladies. Each were close to sounding like Karen, but Tori is the real deal. The first time I heard this great singer doing this hit, my eyes started sweating. I let my grandson listen to Karen, and then played Tori's cover, and he thought it was Karen again.
Remarkable resemblance to Karen Carpenter, who I am sure is smiling in heaven. 20 year old Tori Holub also has a couple originals. Thanks to Joe, I learned about Tori when she only had 3.4k subscribers to her channel. I encourage everyone to subscribe to Tori and also to Maria's channel. It is FREE to subscribe so please support your favorite content creators.
I am blown away by Tori Holub. I am a huge fan from the beginning of the Carpenters and cannot believe how she sounds like Karen on We've Only Just Begun.
TH-cam search Wings of Pegasus. There is a guy named Fil who has a reaction channel and he has this software where he feeds the song or just the vocal through it and it shows the singer's voice on a moving graph---sort of looks like the lines you see on an EKG but for the voice instead of for the heart. He ran Karen singing this song and then fed Tori singing it. It was nearly spot on...almost identical. I thought Tori sounded so close to Karen that she was lip-syncing, but she wasn't. It's really Tori. It's kind of eery.
Eery in the most wonderful way. I was the Patreon guy who requested this from Fil. I misunderstood what he meant by “cover” in the Patreon chat. It was my first live as a member and the day this dropped. Serendipity in action as he gave my comment with the link a ❤ and said it was great. The next week I made a different comment and he mentioned in the live stream that Sunday’s show was a bout a special cover. The comment on my comment was “It’s Sunday’s episode.” I started to shake. 1/2M views between the two episodes later 😃
I swear to God, I never stop having fun listening to You Drop Your drinking cup and Halt the Video., Just as Fun watching Tenor Listening to the same Video.
Yes ~ her reaction was a beauty ! I have rewatched this reaction a few times and can't stop myself 🙂 Who is the other person who's reaction was hilarious ? I know the first time TeaSpice heard Tori sing the Burt Bacharach-Hal David melody TeaSpice had me on the floor with her facial expressions and denial LOL !!! Cheers to you !
@@jbs256 Oh my lordamercy - Tenor's reaction was one of the top 3. That and this one and TeaSpice when she heard Tori the first time singing that Burt-Hal medley. TeaSpice's facials and her complete denial such a voice of purity could come from Tori vs. KC -- that one is my favorite. That and your Fudge Cake reply ! Cheers, Marcia
NEVER MIND - I subscribe to Tenor and yes his reaction is a killer as well as his reaction to "Close To You". So good !!! Do checkout TeaSpice re. above.
As soon as I saw this I knew you were going to be astonished. She sounds so much like Karen Carpenter. Her's is one of those voices that you can't forget, once you have heard it.
@@WNYretireeRochester is now the home again of Mike Cidoni Lennox. Coauthor of Carpenters: The Musical Legacy. With Chris May and Richard Carpenter. Chris interviewed Richard at the 55th in April and last December produced Tori’s cover of Georgia On My Mind. If you are good at puzzles you can figure out approximately when Richard found out about Tori. Not April when he met her in person.
@@jbs256 Hah! Nice to know. Also the home of Lou Gramm of Foreigner and the childhood home of Renee Fleming. It's a very musical city, probably in part because the Eastman School of Music, which is where Fleming got her musical education, is there. There is a jazz festival every summer here, that is gaining more and more international recognition every year.
As great as her Carpenters covers are, I think the recently released version of the old Perry Como song It's Impossible is even better. Absolutely stunning.
They met last April when she sang at the Carpenters 55th. They knew each other longer but was a secret. He’s slowing down, he had to cancel his UK tour. 🙏 Joe
Hi Maria, yes, I do my best not to give it away. At over 300k views it’s more difficult but not impossible. I was algorithm’d Tori back last October. It’s been an adventure. She is so much more than just a Karen “clone” she has a magical voice. Tori is 20 and that is synergy to Karen who was 20 for WOJB and the 2nd album. If I told you Tori can do supreme justice to Olivia songs, you’d be surprised, too. I’ll leave a link to her most recent short cover of “Sam” down below. She is also a multi-instrumentalist; guitar, piano and yes a little drums. But guitar is her main skill. She has a small library of full length videos and audios. The vast majority are the short vertical format. There’s a whole story surrounding WOJB and the amazing Jim Wilkas who put this all together. Maybe he will impart that, if not I’ll fill you in. I’ll also get you more caffeinated with a special song. In April, Tori was invited as one of 8 acts, to the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration. I was there too. Tori sang two songs on that night. It was a 4 night event in Downey, CA. Night 2 was The Acoustic Concert. The first song she sang and also the ONLY non-Carpenters song of the night, it was “Something In Your Eyes.” Richard C. and Cynthia Weil wrote it for Karen but she died before even hearing it. The concert was held in the church where Karen had her funeral and Richard married Mary. A very connected and historic church. But churches have weird acoustics and there was crowd noise, coughing etc. The official recording made by Chip for the 55th was dodgy at best, but Tori sounded fantastic. She wasn’t happy and when she got home to her studio, she re-recorded it with a clean piano track from Drew Jansen the piano for that night. She basically created the Carpenters song that never was. It was originally sung by Dusty Springfield w/Richard for his Time, solo album in 1987, a beautiful rendition but, not exactly what we all wanted. I will warn you on this one, have tissues at the ready, depending on your level of Carpenters love. It seems strong, this hits hard. I’m so glad you enjoyed this, it is to me also, the best cover of ANY song I’ve ever seen and as a Carpenters cover, insanely difficult to pull off. Hat’s off the Jim and the international crew and Tori ❤. There's more than just 2 iconic songs. Anything Karen sang was. Look up iconic in the dictionary and people like Karen should be there. Karen was also a hell of a jazz drummer. And yes I swear Tori is the reincarnation of Karen. I hope this isn't some kind of AI trick.
Karen Carpenter is my second favorite voice of all time (Lucy Thomas took top tier), but Tori is so close to Karen it's like a reincarnation has happened. I listened to everything Karen sang and my estimate is Tori overlaps Karen voicewise by about 90%.
Yes, she has said “I can keep a beat” so no Mr. Guder solo quite yet. Her strengths are guitars and piano. So she’s a multi-instrumentalist. Check her channel, especially on I, Crazy On You is a fave of mine. It’s longer on I. Any Beatles cover for Keyboards.
Because no one can. Just as no one will ever sound like Tori. Like a fingerprint, no two are alike. But if you zoom out, the fingers might look similar but not exact.
@@siciliansummer nope. Put any of those vocals through pitch monitoring software and they will not match the vocal they are mimicking. Just can’t happen. The ONLY vocal that will match is the same vocal that was recorded. This is fact, not opinion. Fil at Wings of Pegasus channel has demonstrated this countless times. Does it sound similar to your ear? That’s one thing. An exact match is a physical impossibility.
@@jbs256 They can easily mimic WEAK voices easily. Go listen to any of them on TH-cam. They can't parrot GREAT voices, but they can mimic weak voices easily.
@@siciliansummer you’re not getting what I’m saying. To the ear, you may think they sound “like” someone. Weak or strong, it doesn’t matter. They simply are close, no more. Like Tori is “close” to Karen. Not the same, at all. We have the technology to differentiate voices. That is all. That the sound similar is cool. There are tribute acts for many artists. They sound like but not exactly. Even you used the word “exactly” which is absolutely correct. That’s again because no one can. That Tori can do justice to the songs of an era is what’s special. Go listen to her and Dan’s cover of Suddenly. Maria reacted to it a few days ago. Same girl, different vocal range. She’s amazing that she can emote the style of who she’s covering. She covers The Beatles, yet she sounds nothing like John, Paul, George or even Ringo. Her covers have the feel of the time.
This is a good cover but don't sound just like her to me she can't get the low pitch like karen but some parts sound like her, but she is a very good singer though, but I've always been biased for the originals anyway very few ppl can do better than the original singers
Not the point. She’s not a mimic. That’s her voice. The closest natural voice. She can sing songs of a generation, not hers. Look at her covers of Something In Your Eyes (Studio Version), Karen never sang it and It’s Impossible, Karen sang one line.
@@Dannysssss many, but many are shorts. She’s on the big 3. Here, TT and IG. Add Music to her name on the other two. All the long form are here, though. On many of the shorts they are longer on IG and I assume TT but I’m not on that one. Here newest is “Sam” by Olivia and that’s here. She doesn’t sound like Karen on that one. She has a deep voice but here range is nuts as you’ll see on Sam. She basically sounds like she’s doing justice to what ever she sings from the 60’s to the 80’s. She also has q original both on TH-cam. Christmas Again, released last November and Something to Believe In, in the style of Bacharach/Carpenters.
Agreed! They're all just cheap imitations of a woman who brought the world one of the most unique female alto voices to ever be recorded! RIP Karen. Nobody can hold a candle to the raw emotional purity that filled every song you sang while here on earth.

It's pure joy to watch someone respond to perfection as you have!
The first time I heard Tori sing, I was so amazed that I thought she had to be lip-synching but it's all her, even the backing vocals.
This brings me to tears Every time I hear it.
Wings of Pegasus did a detailed technical analysis of her.
@@jbs256 I get quite excited waiting for the initial reaction 😀

It helps when all love Carpenters. ❤
It’s nuts.

Everytime I hear her sing anything carpenters I get chills.
Wow! 😮
Absolutely right these are big shoes to fill and she has definitely done it!!! 😊
I had the same reaction when I first heard her. Growing up listening to the Carpenters. This was like WOW!!.
The world has missed Karen's voice so yes, this is Reincarnation. God gave us Tori Holub
They have a new cover out 'Close to you' It had me in tears, please listen
SHE ALSO DID THE BACKGROUND SINGERS...JUST HER VOICE. PITCH PERFECT.
I can't blame you for crying It made me cry too I grew up with the Carpenters and it's amazing how she sounded exactly like Karen Carpenter This gave me chills
Technically, Karen died of heart complications that were due to her anorexia/bulimia.
very nice x
Tori Holub is an incredible artist! I definitly want to hear more. I'm tellung eryone I know to check her out!
perfect !!!!
And we get a chance to hear it live one day, i hope.
This song was originally a bank commercial.
My reaction was, "Karen Lives!"
What a great reaction to Tori’s cover! Thank you!
@@jbs256 Tee Spice's reaction to this video was priceless as she just looked completely dumbfounded and for once speechless, ha-ha.
Thank you Andy!❤
@jbs256 Thank you Joe for introducing me and many others to Tori.
I am blown away by Tori Holub. I am a huge fan from the beginning of the Carpenters and cannot believe how she sounds like Karen on We've Only Just Begun.
It's like Tori is the reincarnation of Karen. ❤
What a singer beautiful

I heard Karen is still alive in the Witness Protection Program along with other famous people😀 Stay tuned.
If I didn't know better, I'd swear it was The Carpenters.
Close, but not Karen's distinctive voice.
Tori's about as close to Karen as you can get.

Again, you couldn’t be more correct. Listen to her other songs that Maria is reacting to as a sample.
I honestly don't get it. Beautiful voice but I've never heard and still haven't anyone who sounds like Karen.
Same here.
She has a nice voice, but she doesn't sound 'exactly' like Karen Carpenter.
Because no one can. Just as no one will ever sound like Tori. Like a fingerprint, no two are alike. But if you zoom out, the fingers might look similar but not exact.
@@jbs256 Not necessarily true. Those weird Filipino karaoke singers mimic famous weak voice singers all the time.
