Took the team 3 years (over the span of 14 months) to create this gem. It never gets old. Brilliant. His "Fallen Art" was spectacular as well. "Ark" (not by Tom Baginski) is a fantastic animation, however, sad and rather depressing. Tread carefully on your journey into [the] Ark. Might leave you scarred.

The music, the shot design, the animation, the dark and gothic-ness.
THIS AT 05:25 to the end IS SO AHEAD OF ITS TIME, damn.
    It's 2024, and I just found this.
This was uploaded 12 years ago,
    and made 22 years ago.
    I'm 32 this year.

This guy knew exactly what was going to happen. He was sent there on a journey as his ancestors were sent before him to continue to construct the catherdral, a catherdral which would contain the thoughts and memories and history of his people.

I recommend short book which inspirated this animation. It was planetoid far away from Earth. Priest was sent there to check if in the catedral miracle could happend. It was last weeks, they will loose planetoid forever. That priest was infected by catedral and he couldn't leave it. When he went on space ship he start dying. So he stayed there. He found out he has this material in him after infection (same with catedral). The animation show last scene od this sfi story :)

I remember when I watched this for the first time in 2002 (and it blowed my mind). Impressive work !!! which should be awarded straight away !!
Unfortunately, this is not the first time when Oscar committee ignored hard work and gave shit about it. In my humble opinion, after so many years this is still one of the greatest animations ever made. I always recognized this scenery ....The halls looks familiar to the mine of Moria from Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. It might be just my bad observation but I'll bet that T.Bagiński could be first.

How nice to take a coffe, open internet in the morning and find people exchanging ideas and information in peace. You all are kind of right just because some periods of time share estetics.
Imho the idea, but not the look, is a bit like Sagrada Familia and the Moria view is recalled just because of light. Which is natural, both work try to imagine a great hall seen in a single source of light. What is different from Moria is that Moria is geometric and this is a biological structure, which was Gaudi's goal btw to make architecture look like biological forms

this is one of my favourite short films from my youth [along with The Pier (Bennett) (2004)], and i always found my way back to it, sometimes having the immediate urge to re-watch it out of the blue, years after i thought about it last. i just now (after linking to it in a reddit thread) saw that it even got an Oscar nomination - well deserved, very well indeed.
the animation still holds up, twenty fuckin' years after creation! the same can not be said about many animated movies from that era. not to mention the atmosphere, the haunting reverence of the emphemeral, the devotion of sacrifice (however intentional)...

Unikajcie katedr:)

The body IS a temple. The truth is there to all that seek and the light is not only guidance but provides life. At the end of time, a barren wasteland, the brightness of the sun still can't be looked upon. He picks up the dust of the ground and to it he returns, rooted to the church. It will forever be within you and a part of you, even if you look away, it is there.

SPOILER ! Dukaj is a great writer. A metaphore how each person (at least in nowadays European culture)6 thinks of themselves as an independent traveller but in the end just follows the same paths of thoughts and decision as everyone. Just building the culture (a catherdral has been an often symbol of culture but is is 7 pm and my coffee didn't kick in and my studying days were 20 years ago. So I sadly can't put the names/titles here... I hope you'll find it yourself if you don't believe me)
But as Dukaj is a master it is just one lousy interpretation.

(cont) He sees the road ending and he is nowhere near to the answers promised by God. His faith (the light) flickers and he seems to be doubting. He then returns to the earth as symbolised by him picking up the dust. Then, when all seemed to be in darkness God showed him the light. It bathes the cathedral in glory and he finally sees the way and becomes PART of the journey into enlightenment. The cloud in the end looks like a figure bending over to oversee the cathedral. Thoughts?

    • @amobile7150

Sinew is the last part of the strength that holds faith together, if that means the church is made up by that and is required to be present for faith to persist.
I find it strange that the remnants turn away from the light and the wanderer has a panicked look about him as the end is coming, as if the light is something to be feared, even if it is our life's journey.
If the building that stands alone, held aloft by follwers own sinew, only to be shrouded in eternal darkness except for a lone wanders brave undertaking, what good is the church? Alone on a cliffs edge... 6:09

I did answer to an old comment about this but I wanna elaborate on this actually. I WILL warn you that I'm theorizing a lot in here without specific proof in this movie. I do allow myself to do that though since this is mostly me procrastinating a review of this film.
Many people are relating this to OUR actual religion and stuff, which makes sense, considering the original source is also (to my knowledge) related to these themes. I did not read the original source though, and want to speculate on this video independently.
I don't think this cathedral is in any way good in this world. I think it's something evil, like a thing that spreads across the world only to cause more suffering. It's also not genuiely holy, but it makes itself out to be.
I think actual normal cathedrals do exist in this world (where else would THIS one get its name from otherwise?) but this thing might be only building itself up in this shape to take some kind of form. A form that in its original version is a sign of some kind of otherworldly power, too.
I think it either just showed up like a parasite or it was man-made.
But anyway, my main question was, "did these people plan for this to happen to them, or was it accidental", and what the protagonist was doing here.
The synopsis of this says that he "wants to find answers, [but instead] finds tranquility". This makes me think that he may not have planned to be turned into a part of the cathedral, but KNEW it was possible. He could have well enough went there to find out what the cathedral actually was, and didn't realize the star was about to shine on the cathedral this fast.
However, the film itself suggests that these people were aware that they should let it happen. It's kind of implied both by the fact this pilgrim didn't try to hide or anything, and by the fact every other person was put in a specific place. If they'd all be random accidents, the cathedral would most likely have much more of a chaotic layout, since they'd be caught anywhere in it by surprise.
The transformation(?) is very painful to them though, and it seems like the pain comes right back to some extend when the light makes them alive again. This leads me to thinking they must have been some form of sacrifice for a bigger cause, because come on, no one would do this without a very important motivation.
This brings me back to the fact it's called the cathedral and shapes itself - or more likely is shaped by the people who sacrifice themselves - into looking like one. No matter if it's man-made or if it just appeared, something like this could gather a religion. A cult, even. I think a cult would be more likely to regularly send a sacrifice to feed...whatever they believe is happening here.
TL;DR: My theory is that the cathedral is some kind of parasite that feeds on human lives in order to grow, and due to its nature and looks it developed a cult around itself. The cult regularly (most likely during the time where the star shines light on the cathedral) sends a sacrifice to it in order for it to continue its growth. The protagonist is one of the sacrifices.

Okay here goes. To me, what I saw was a man seeking an answer to life's mystery. He started off as a non-believer, then he saw the 'face of god' on top of the Katedra. He made the decision to enter. Inside, his faith (represented by the light on his sceptre) flickered and those who were already on the path sensed his light and knew he was also on his way. He reaches the end and seems to ask 'is this it? Where does it lead? Where are the answers?'

To wszystko, o czym myślę. Trochę źle to zinterpretowałam, ale mam nadzieję, że zrozumiesz. :)

Furthermore you can interpret the Catherdral, like built in the past when the main doctrine was the Religion and its Church and the science is the start of the bridge ... and if you look at the bridge you will see that we are just in the beginning, but at least we know the starting point and we have the base and its a matter of time ... The main character is rover which is the common characteristic of all geniuses, no-matter whether they wander in their minds or in unexplored lands.

Actually it's based on a short story by Jacek Dukaj, a polish writer. Style of the building is obviously influenced by Zdzisław Beksiński artwork, and paintings.

@KsukiAizawa there is a scripture in the bible that says some of the faithful followers of Christ will become pillars in the temple of God never to be removed. This reminded me of that almost to a tee.

if u would be interested in my opinion: it seems like the man believed in gods, he found shelter in them but then the boarders of the unknown started to shrink as man discovered science and science shuttered man's faith in gods. It amputated him making the man the last perfect being, depriving him of a supreme creator (as science today acknowledges human species as the most complicated structure in nature ). Through the lens of science, man is the last god.

+oneplusonetwo it's on this particular tenet (I believe)
"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."
      John 12:24
So the man dies and then blooms, becoming a part supporting and then extending the life of the cathedral.
