The boy’s refusal of a tip may be part of a streetwise strategy. He is small and youthful in appearance for his age of 18 and I didn’t see an elder in the video. He may feel that accepting good tips from well-meaning tourists may make him a “mark” for street gangs. He’s also a handsome boy, and if he’s been doing this in Mexico City since he was 13, I suspect his refusal of tip money helps ensure that tourists understand that the service he provides is shining shoes, and nothing else. I hate to sound gossipy, but that is a reality of urban life, even in the U.S.
