I was still surprised when I first watched this movie and saw Jack Sparrow in it. Still hard to believe Johnny hated the later clout he got from 21 Jump Street.
Amazing how his career catapulted thanks to Tim Burton and Pirates of the Caribbean Yet he had so much difficulty going through all that abuse from Amber heard
The LittleRock Clydesdale I love old special effects , the thing I dont like about CGI is they use it for stuff they could use practically like CG buildings , my thought is if your going to use CGI go nuts with it & CG stuff we have never seen (avatar) not like the avengers where they CG background building when I'm sure they could just paint the background like old movie CGI is just a fake way of making your movie have "scope" which is complete bullshit , example , Laurence of Arabia has scope , westerns have scope because they are in real places
The LittleRock Clydesdale The arms scared the crap out of me, too. I lived right on an alley, and every time I'd come out my back door when it was dark outside, I'd look down at the end of the alley and imagine Freddy there, running like that...yikes.
Fun fact: Glenn's bedtime puree was actually achieved by flipping a set and camera upside down and pouring the gore through a hole. Not sure if it was done via miniature or full-scale. But either way, it's another one of those effects that sounds like it's cheaper and better looking than CGI.
Definitely full scale. The entire room was built to be rotated, which even included nailing all the furniture to the floor, and having everything on the shelves glued down. It definitely makes the final product feel more real than just tossing an actor on a green screen.

Come to think of it, the twist ending makes sense. Nancy has never woken up! Everything from "getting Krueger into the realworld" onwards was an extended elaborate dream. This is why there's clearly supernatural stuff with her mother and the bed.
Unfortunately, licensing issues make it nearly impossible to do it in film form. Thankfully we have comic books such as Freddy VS Jason VS Ash and Jason VS Leatherface, or video games such Mortal Kombat X or Terrordrome: Rise of the Boogeymen

The commentary is so good I barely noticed I'm watching a 25min review of a movie I've literally seen probably more than any movie ever. No exaggeration, this is my favorite movie of all time.
Decker, I'd just like to say that I respect and find you an entertaining and awesome film reviewer. The fact that you're finally reviewing some of Horror's biggest classics (At least, the first few, I'd rather not get into some of the.. in depth "sequels.") is honestly something that's probably going to keep me waking up in the morning. You deserve each and every subscription you get for just being an overall cool guy.
Saw a pretty good explanation, don't remember where, that she never actually woke up. The whole end of the movie was her nightmare which explains setting up the booby traps so fast, the scene in the mother's bedroom, and the jumping to the next morning with the car. Her showing up in part 3 shows that she somehow survived and escaped "off camera".
I always saw the ending as a regular, run-of-the-mill nightmare that Nancy had. She beat Kruger, but she'd probably be traumatized for life, which explains why she takes medication to prevent dreaming in part 3. She doesn't take it to keep Freddy away because she thought she already beat him (hence her surprise when she heard Kristen reciting the rhyme and when she saw Freddy in Kristen's dream). She takes it to stop her own PTSD induced nightmares. But that was just my take.
I always had the theory that Nancy didn't actually wake up from that last dream where Glenn was supposed to be looking out. This would explain the mother's apparent osmosis into the bed. Then freddy fakes her out. He jump cuts to morning when she opens the door. Even Nancy was looking around like WTF is this? Ignoring the obvious "There is no spoon" moment and accepting this as the real world. She gets in the car with what appears to be her friends. She does indeed escape from Freddy though hence her return in Dream Warriors. So really it's unknown how she finally got away.
Great show man as usual. I believe in an interview Wes Craven actually said the ending where Nancy walked outside was intended to imply that yes the entire movie had been a dream, but prophetic dream and now she would have to watch them all die again. Soooooo not technically "happy". But yes the sequel baiting is the much better idea I think. Fair warning these were two of my favorite series as a kid and I watched them all at least 50 times so I'm ready to call you on any bullshit. lol :P
Its my head-canon that Nancy's teacher dealt with so much paranormal shit in this series that she left the town and became a paranormal investigator in the insidious series. I can't tell why I think this, just works I guess.

Ah, A Nightmare on Elm Street. I find a lot of the ambience still holds up really well, and of course the Freddy character himself. The rest of the cast's acting? Maybe not so much. Still a classic in the genre though, all things considered.
Even further proof that it was all just a dream. None of the channels they could've gotten on those crappy old t.v.s would've been that cool. Plus, Glenn's mom's response to his plan to watch Miss Nude America was unrealistic.
Hey Decker interesting fact the scene where Nancy's mom showed Nancy Freddy's glove is actually the shortened version of the scene. The longer one explained that Nancy and her friends had older siblings that were murdered by Krueger. Siblings they didn't know about and weren't brought up, but it certainly bring a new level of depth for character motivations
Is seriously nobody going to point out Freddy's voice change half way through this movie? How he goes from sounding like a heavy smoking pirate to..You know?
Speaking of Freddy Krueger I have a way to make his glove by hand . Get a leather glove and cut the iconic holes and of course the wrist on the plan side cut right down the middle and fastened with a safety pin . Draw your patterns . Trace them on a copper cookie sheet . Cut them out . Drill holes . Bend them into shape . Connect the metal pieces using brass fasteners . Cut a pattern out of 4 plastic lettuce knives . Paint the blades silver . Super glue them onto the fingertips . Rivet the metal to the glove There you go

Great review as always, Decker. To be honest, I've been waiting for a Summer of Freddy Kruger, but the fact that you're combining it with a Friday the 13th makes it even more awesome! 😀
As you tend to have a knack for, another fun and entertaining review. One thing that always was creepy to me anyway was not just the vile Krueger is going to kill someone aspect but the unsettling sense you get from the people who are supposed to protect you. Like the parents and townspeople saying take this sleeping pill, there isn't any murderer in your dreams. Still Springwood, OH. circa 1984 it's not like anything else worthwhile happened other than sleeping or pill popping.

I was genuinely surprised at how good it was, especially compared to Friday 13th and Halloween. Effects are better, acting is better... I think the story is a lot more real, despite its paranormal angle. Vigilante justice is common where I come from, especially when kids are involved. Petrol-soaked tyre round the neck, a lit match... the community deals with it, there and then. So it makes sense that the parents would kill Freddy to protect their kids, and hide it from their kids. Really is a good horror film. Torrenting part 2 now. Excited!
Ironically there was a draft of the script where Freddy was innocent and he was killing the kids as revenge for being murdered for something he didn't do. Honestly I wish they had kept that part. I love this film. It’s my second favorite in the whole series but it’s still a classic. Side note - The ending in this film was ripped off from the first Phantasm (1979).
Yeeeeeeeeees finally you tackle my favorite horror movie villain of all time!!!!!!!! But it goes down hill from here I'll tell you right now. But to see you review the sequels would be just fine
Saw this in the theater. What was scary about the movie was NOT Freddy, but rather that your dreams could kill you. Imagine trying to stay awake, knowing that you will eventually succumb to sleep. THAT is what is scary. Too bad the sequels didn't realize this, and Freddy got turned into a joke anyway.
Did anyone else notice that John Saxon’s name was first in the credits, heather was 3rd, and I believe England or Johnny Depp was last. England being last could make sense as the most important character is either first or last, but Saxon first? He probably could’ve been last for the star power and big name factor but shouldn’t heather or Robert have been first?!?! LOL
The original Nightmare on Elm Street is 40 years old! Odd it was released in November but it avoided the crowded competition of the Halloween season Made $25.5 million on a $1.8 million budget It stinks about Wes Craven's passing in 2015 but his original creation left a huge impact on pop culture and the horror landscape thanks to word of mouth and popular home video sales I remember renting it a lot at blockbuster Paved the way for Craven’s career to take shape and help a small little studio called New Line Cinema The film has an amazing original concept, plenty of decent scares, an eerie and memorable score by Charles Bernstein, lots of iconic lines, horrific kills, and a legendary performance by Robert Englund He’s both menacing and has a goofy sense of humor but not to the point of self parody which would become a later thing in future movies for better or worse, he lingers in the conscience as well as wreaking havoc in the mind Heather Langenkamp proved to be a great scream queen as well as a final girl, she’s one of the most progressive representations of women in teen horror She was a teenage girl dealing with an epidemic of absent working fathers and alcoholic mothers, being a generation of children shouldering their parents’ catastrophes yet remains earnest as well as resourceful The film also has many cool ways of filming how abstract dreams are even making the culture and science of it fascinating thanks to some clever special effects The movie studio was deemed ‘The House That Freddy Built’, it started out as a small office on a street corner that didn’t have much money or employees But the movie’s success both financial and critical helped get New Line Cinema in the limelight greenlighting more projects It established the slasher genre of the 80s making way for other horror franchises Craven also explored themes like trauma, vengeance, and the blurring line between dreams and reality There’s also an adage of the children paying for the sins of their fathers What are dreams really?, are they mysteries we have yet to uncover?, are they gateways to another plane of existence?, maybe they are windows to the soul leaving our bodies, perhaps having nightmares are signs or omens to bad things in real life Probably the only setbacks are this is very short, some of the acting is subpar, there’s logical leaps, and Craven admitted it was heavily edited by the MPAA which hurt him a bit The ending is also confusing at best which can lead to many theories about what’s actually going on Although ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ would be the starting point for 6 more sequels making it one of the most successful enduring franchises, a remake, and ‘Freddy vs Jason’ Although most would argue the original, Part 3, and ‘New Nightmare’ would be the best installments Overall the first film was a masterpiece that left such an impact on horror it can’t be denied with its main villain’s compelling backstory, a fierce leading lady, and a good amount of terror being a vessel for larger themes next to thematic layers adding a visual punch

Fuck yeah!!! I've often imagined what that would be like! Maybe as Doctor wolfula or ghualash.
+Murfin Kids YESSSS
I agree completely and have thought this for some time. I'd also like to see him and Diamanda crossover.
+Winter Steele I think that would be a funny crossover as these two in terms of political views would be at each others throats.
All the deleted scenes literally show the parents all suspecting it's Krueger. Why did Craven erase them
There was also more to the scene where Nancy's mom shows her the glove. She explains her, glen, and Tina all had older siblings that were murdered by Freddy. It should have been left in. It explains why Kruger targets these particular kids.
Decker should review the Scream franchise!!!!!!!
"Gonna get me some Dominos"
*ceases eating Dominos while watching this review* "Uhhhhhh"
Elm street is near me
Every town has an Elm Street.
I love that the adverts in this are for 'Freddy's Flower'! :D
Happy Halloween Decker!
Freddy loves his fucking boiler room it's everywhere lol
I love this film. It’s my second favorite in the whole series but it’s still a classic.
Side note - The ending in this film was ripped off from the first Phantasm (1979).
I really like your reviews, keep up the good work
I believe Freddy Krueger is a weird change from traditional silent killer. Hes nothing more thana smart ass.
Since its a nightmare in the dreamscape I assume so I would just get a lightsaber
Rod Didn't Kill Himself.
You have the same voice and intonation as "Howard" from the Big Bang Theory.
At 10:43 Freddy’s like why did you knock over my trash can
The man, the legend...decker rises again!!
LOL
The only problem with this movie is that Krueger didn’t have an awesome dreamscape kung fu fight with John Saxon.
Someone recommended me to you so I checked out your review and it's great.
This is my favorite horror movie of all time by the way.
wonder what it would look like if Freddy went against The Joker?
Tie!
The original Nightmare on Elm Street is 40 years old!
Odd it was released in November but it avoided the crowded competition of the Halloween season
Made $25.5 million on a $1.8 million budget
It stinks about Wes Craven's passing in 2015 but his original creation left a huge impact on pop culture and the horror landscape thanks to word of mouth and popular home video sales
I remember renting it a lot at blockbuster
Paved the way for Craven’s career to take shape and help a small little studio called New Line Cinema
The film has an amazing original concept, plenty of decent scares, an eerie and memorable score by Charles Bernstein, lots of iconic lines, horrific kills, and a legendary performance by Robert Englund
He’s both menacing and has a goofy sense of humor but not to the point of self parody which would become a later thing in future movies for better or worse, he lingers in the conscience as well as wreaking havoc in the mind
Heather Langenkamp proved to be a great scream queen as well as a final girl, she’s one of the most progressive representations of women in teen horror
She was a teenage girl dealing with an epidemic of absent working fathers and alcoholic mothers, being a generation of children shouldering their parents’ catastrophes yet remains earnest as well as resourceful
The film also has many cool ways of filming how abstract dreams are even making the culture and science of it fascinating thanks to some clever special effects
The movie studio was deemed ‘The House That Freddy Built’, it started out as a small office on a street corner that didn’t have much money or employees
But the movie’s success both financial and critical helped get New Line Cinema in the limelight greenlighting more projects
It established the slasher genre of the 80s making way for other horror franchises
Craven also explored themes like trauma, vengeance, and the blurring line between dreams and reality
There’s also an adage of the children paying for the sins of their fathers
What are dreams really?, are they mysteries we have yet to uncover?, are they gateways to another plane of existence?, maybe they are windows to the soul leaving our bodies, perhaps having nightmares are signs or omens to bad things in real life
Probably the only setbacks are this is very short, some of the acting is subpar, there’s logical leaps, and Craven admitted it was heavily edited by the MPAA which hurt him a bit
The ending is also confusing at best which can lead to many theories about what’s actually going on
Although ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ would be the starting point for 6 more sequels making it one of the most successful enduring franchises, a remake, and ‘Freddy vs Jason’
Although most would argue the original, Part 3, and ‘New Nightmare’ would be the best installments
Overall the first film was a masterpiece that left such an impact on horror it can’t be denied with its main villain’s compelling backstory, a fierce leading lady, and a good amount of terror being a vessel for larger themes next to thematic layers adding a visual punch
Summer's off to a great start.... The Friday the 13th (1980) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) reviews you did are awesome and i believe it's about time for my cat nap... wish me luck :)
I enjoy these reviews so much! You are very talented :-)
oh yes rabbit England did a very good job playing Freddyand I like the original Nightmare on Elm Street that was good
oh and did u ever see the zombie classic children shouldent play with dead things, truly creepy flick full of atmosphere
that scene with the window in the end was frekin funny
Glenn to Freddy: Mr. Dream Demon... You will always remember today as the day you ALMOST killed Captain Jack Spa- *cut to blood volcano*
Favorite slasher movie EVER I binged watched all of them when I was like 6 years old
Hey, you changed your setup! I don't know how to explain it, but the way the movements are captured on camera are different than before. Also you're more brightly lit.
It all looks pretty good.
RIP John Saxon
I recall how scary I thought the wall stretching effect looked to me when I first saw this movie in the theater. Some (actually many) things would be best left to practical effects, although I wonder if you'd still find people creative enough to come with good practical effects these days.
