Great Video. This is the first "do it myself" repair job on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and I would not even have attempted it without this video. Two things I will say that may be obvious...wait until your vehicle is cool before you attempt to remove this!! AND...it comes out a whole lot easier than it goes back in. With some patience, determination, and 4 letter words of encouragment I managed to get this knocked out in a few hours.
Book says should only take 1.5 hours sooooo your mechanic...you, are overcharging yourself!! Hard to find good help these days! Lol I'm fixing to tackle this as well, good pointers! Thanks
Thank you for the no bs, clear and concise video. Just finished install on sister in laws 2014 and genuinely appreciate not having to sit through 20 minutes of Bs in a how to video. Thanks again from the end of 2024.
So great video. I consider myself to be fairly mechanically inclined. Took me about an hour and a half to get all bolts free. The reinstall was horrible trying to get the bottom screw. I'm 6ft 3in and long arms..trying to get the alternator at the angle I needed while hand screwing the bolt in to ensure no cross thread was horrible. I could not see the hole. I ended up putting a dab of finger nail polish on the block about dead center where the hole was hiding. I was the able to eventually get the bolt in after 3 days of trying. Great video thank you for all the socket size notes. Just don't get frustrated and rewatch video. I have a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 127,000 miles on first alternator. O'REILLY'S had best price 389 with core and military discount and 4:53 lifetime warranty .
Very great diy Thank you!. The 13mm ratchet was a charm did it in 40-45min. My 2011 GC made the humming noise I drove it for 2 days after and then the battery light came on. Swapping the Alternator was the solution. the swap was easy!
Maybe cuz he made it look 3x easier than "the easy" that this repair is? 😂 I'm a pretty great technician but 2011 is the newest vehicle I've worked on. The job is easy but it's never easy getting bolts lined up when your arms are done & switched to noodle mode.
See that ground strap at 1:10 beneath the alternator. I would suggest removing it from the chassis side. That way in case you drop the alternator because you lose your grip it won't tear that strap. Ask me how I know...
Great video and walkthrough! Factory recall is coming for these and I am submitting for reimbursement today with Jeep. 1100 was the quote from jeep...instead I opted out for the 5 bolts and clip. Thanks again!
Wouldn’t it have been easier if u connected the electrical clip right after that bottom bolt in the front bottom where u could still see where u will connect it in the back ?
Hi got an Jeep Disel V6 2014 brand. with a dead generator, at least i think so.. Generator hot when connected and wont start, (remove the plus from generator and it starts (charge with ctek) But any guide to remove generator from the disel, lots of stuff between the generator and to exit it.
Hey can anyone tell me at 0.39 in the video it shows 3 ground wire connection, the one at the top broke off when I was changing my alternator and I can’t seem to find what it was connected to
I found that doing the top bolts first was easier than the bottom one. I had to do it twice (faulty alternator) and the second time I did it in less than an hour!
Hello i have jeep grand cherokee 2017 lately been having voltage fluctuate between 12.5 and 14.3 when driving and when idle 13.9 to 14.3 never happen before changed the alternator but stil same problem any advice
I'm having the same issue right now. I just changed out both the main battery and the Aux battery as well because on the dash readout it kept saying start/stop not ready battery charging. I did find a forum on Car Gurus about this. If you want the link send me a message. It won't let me post it here. Did you find anything out?
Hey buddy. I did not see any alternator bracket. I have 2011 jeep grand cherokee 3.6l alternator bracket but i cant seem to find it anywhere (dealers, junkyards...). Help please
My 2013 is whining guess it’s time just was wondering how much tension on belt as in the old days it was push down 1/2 inch movement was ok what about this one ?
On today’s cars I tend to be a little bit tighter. It’s not uncommon for the tensioners to loosen up or wear out. If you suspect yours is bad they do sell them as a kit Gates Belt Company makes a good one.
For the 2016 JGC how did you access the alternator. Did you have to undo all those hoses that are sitting on top of the alternator? I have a 2016 and need to do this job?
Can you make a video of a regular Cherokee year range of 2014 to current 3.2L Serpentine belt change and or Alternator Change? Its Prob going to be the Harder of the two, but this is the one that I can not find a single Video of!!! And the fact that it is going to be harder, is exactly why I would like a video!
Can anyone help me real quick. Got a 11' JGC, almost for 2 years now. Just this last week, we turned it on in the mornin to get it warmed up ( Mn winters) and turned it off about 30 mins later. Later that day I was gonna do an errand and all of a sudden, it would not turn on and made a clack clack sound from the engine bay. We gave it a quick jump too see if it just uncharged or something, took the charge and I ran it around the neighborhood, as I come back in to my driveway, all the lights on the dash turn on, and its shaking like it wants to turn off. It turns off right as I get in the driveway. Day later, we tow it to our local mechanic place, and I inform them about what happened. Get a call today saying the engine is done for, and will need a new engine and other misc parts. What do you more experienced guys say I should do? Any help is greatly appreciated 🙏
I think it’s the alternator it started whining and windows go up slowly I found that there’s no voltage indicator light or warning light for low voltage you can take belt off run engine and no lights come on or any warning crazy
rascal7298 The positive side goes through the alternator and into the access port. So if you just disconnected at the access port you will still have power at the alternator. Kind of hard to explain.
Interesting video! If I was about to replace my alternator, I would not be able to put the belt as it was before. It would be too lose or too tight hahah. I will leave it to my car mechanic instead.
Hmm. Looks like my car battery is under the seat. I have no power to move the seat forward cause to reach battery to disconnect cable. Terminals under hood will not let me jump start for some power, car dead. Had it towed to shop, otherwise I would have changed alternator myself, poor me. Great video.
Actually this just happened to my ‘13. Had a smell, heard a whine and the next day, it was completely dead. Had it towed to the dealer. Due to the recall and it possibly being the issue, they replaced the alternator. They also had to replace the Power Train Control Module (PCM). Luckily, it was still within the 5 year power train warranty. So the PCM was replaced under the warranty. I asked the same question...Could the faulty alternator have back fed to the PCM and cause that issue. They said it was possible, but they weren’t sure...
Thank you brother awesome break down the dealer wanted to charge my wife over $900 to do this I was wondering what the big deal was cause I've changed alternators on every car I've owned
My gc 2014 3.6 alternator suddenly dead. And Was covered by a jeep recall that affected a several 3.6 stellantis models from 2011 to 2015. So i'm now waiting for my dealer call me to do the labour. The Best part is for free but I have waiting just 1 month to arrive the New alternator .... thats is the shitty part damn (im from Chile) greetings.
STEEVE DAVID Nicolas on this it was a bearing that went bad. It's hard to say they manufacture these parts now now days in different locations sometimes you get a good one and sometimes you don't.

2020 this video saved my life ,did a swap on the side of the HW!
Kripto_krazy_kali glad you’re out of that situation. Thank you for watching!
Great video! Took 1 hour total with this video. Thanks for saving me money!

What's that tape you touching at 1:18? I've got it broken. Where is it attached to on the other side?
As far as I can tell from what you’re talking about it’s tape covering the wiring harness
I have the same question at 1:18 you touch a ground ribbon mine is broken and I don’t know what it’s to did we ever find out what part this is
Ty for this video it helped me tremendously something they were going charge me 800-1000$ to change took me a quarter of the price good video mate
How someone could dislike this I'm not sure ..maybe he works at Jeep 😂😂

Installing a 370 amp with a .5 inch shorter belt 🥶🥶 just had to watch to make sure I knew what I was doing lol great job!
With this also work for a 5.7 v8?

Nick Alejandro glad to help. Thank you for watching!!
Nick Alejandro there is going to be a recall for the alternator?
Quick question... is replacing the alternator on the 5.7l similar?
Did you ever find out this ? Going to be doing this today
How do you know how tight to put the belt?
Wouldn’t it have been easier if u connected the electrical clip right after that bottom bolt in the front bottom where u could still see where u will connect it in the back ?
Changed the alternative starter and computer and it is throwing codes service 4 wd cruise control and the lift is not working
That green ground wire is lose. Where does that connect to?
Thanks a lot did it in 30 mins just how you showed us!! Good job

You're a lifesaver - My jeep started acting up and i replaced the 6 year old battery. Now moving to the altenator. Which one did you replaced it with?
Great video… straight to the point 💯

Why not access the battery cable at the access port in the engine compartment? Good video though!
rascal7298 The positive side goes through the alternator and into the access port. So if you just disconnected at the access port you will still have power at the alternator. Kind of hard to explain.
I smoked some meth and then changed the alternator and spark plugs in my jeep in under 2 hours 👍
rafael ruiz I would double check your work if I was you. Lol
I have a 2019 same engine but there's no way i can reach it like that. Its like the motor is further back.
Very well done video!
Thank you for your video

That sucks that you had to go through all that. Sometimes you can charge batter through the terminals under the hood. But it can take a while.
Great video!!
I was told that I burned out my computer on the Jeep and that happens when your alternator lets go
Is that true

QuikBrdr83 this happened to me yesterday on my ‘12. Guess we will be towing to it the dealership tomorrow.
@@FireSneaks83 is there any recall for the alternator on grand cherokee 2011? Help please
Mexiway Not sure. Call a dealer or go to the NHTSA website, where you can put your VIN # in to see if your vehicle has any pending recalls
Thanks for the info love the video Lotta good information
Thanks, very informative,
Just got off the phone with the Jeep dealership. They want to charge me $1100 for this😅
