Here in the US we have laws in place to protect businesses from lawsuits when donating food products in good faith. Once a product is donated it is up to whoever takes the donation to maintain food safety standards. I've worked in several grocery stores over the years and we have always had local food banks pick up out of date products. Out of date does not equate to unsafe for consumption. Food 'sell by' dates are mostly rough estimates of how long before the product has a noticeable drop in flavor or texture quality. There are exceptions of course in the case of things like sushi or other highly perishable foods. Still even with systems in place like those being fairly common the US throws roughly 30% of all food produced into the trash. It is rather disheartening when so many people (even in the US) live with food insecurity.
