The timing of your videos are perfect. I just started getting my unRaid server setup about a month ago. Struggled for 2 weeks and then found your channel. You go over everything so well and don't do the common "skip over a bunch of important steps because it's obvious to some expert" or "I did this setup in my other video so you should go check it out". Thank you so much for all of the work you have done. Plus my goal for the weekend was to get a proper backup setup. Good luck on the goal to 10k!
Thank Alien! I needed this after pulling my cache drive and swapping it without realizing all my containers data was stored there... oops. Anyway probably for the better as I redid everything in a cleaner way. Love your videos man, super helpful 🙏
Thanks, I've been using this plugin for a while but never needed to use it until recently. The restore process worried me because I only need to restore one particular container but wasn't sure if there were any confirmations before processing the restore after "Step 1," and your video showed exactly what I needed to know before I clicked "Next!"
Video Idea: "How to Set Up a Collaborative Development Environment for Multiple Developers." I'd love to see a guide on the best ways to set up a shared, secured dev environment, possibly using a virtual machine or other methods, to allow multiple developers to collaborate effectively on projects. I'm currently working on this myself and would really appreciate some insights!
Video idea (might be a very niche use case) Docker network between 2 Unraid servers with a dedicated nic to the docker network. I want to offload some of the 24/7 dockers to a more power efficient server that is already running pfSense and Unify controller (thanks for that guide btw.) so I can put my main server to sleep during the night. Thank you for your amazing contribution to the Unraid community
It's in the queue. I currently have 50+ video ideas lined up, Immich will be sooner rather than later, but I don't have a date set as of yet. I am working to get ahead so that I can focus on getting more content out. Not only that, but I may set up a Patreon account and give early access there... Nothing set in stone yet.
Thank you for the video. I still had the old deprecated backup I was doing manually and updated. This helped, thank you. As far as suggestions for new videos, I have two one would be a Nextcloud video. I've tried to set it up in the past and just could never get it right. Also, could you do a video on upgrading PMM (Plex Media Manager)) to Kometa. I really can't find an updated video on this and I wondered why PMM wasn't working on Plex and just saw they changed to Kometa.
You're welcome! I am glad it was able to help you. Thanks for the suggestions. I run Nextcloud on my production server, and yeah, it's a beast. Love it though. I have added Nextcoudl and Kometa to the list...
i use zfs cache pool for appdata and Domains and system shares., then via user scripts script create a snapshot and backup that to cloud/remote server. no downtime and very quick. using custom schedules and user scripts plugins. takes a little tinkering, but works... and yes. cleanup of older snapshots aswell :-)
Thank you for the video, it was tremendously helpful, since I’m a noob in Unraid. So that being said, I have a question, all containers backed up good from appdata, accept for Binhex-Jellyfin. According to the appdata log, ‘binhex-shared’ does not exist! Please check mappings binhex-jellyfin does not have any volume to backup. How do I reconfigure the mappings for this? I would like thank you in advance for any help you might have.
If you don't mind me asking, what is the difference between this backup method vs the EasyBackup tutorial you made December last year? Literally all I have on my unraid right now is a Plex docker container, and I'm unsure if this method or the Easybackup method is preferable.
There were some reports that EasyBackup had some issues, so I looked around and found Appdata Backup. I created this video so that if you had an issue with EasyBackup you would have another option. If EasyBackup is working for you, then there is no sense in changing anything.
@@AlienTech42 I was just following along, and at the start when creating the backups share, once I hit add share and done when I return to the shares tab the backups share isn't shown. Any ideas why it wouldn't show? Edit: I figured it out. Both my drives are over 90% full, and apparently it defaults to 10% minimum free space, so I had to manually input a value of space I had free.
well, if you're feeling balsy, I recently bought off used parts for a backup server I will host offisite in a friend's house, I am wondering if you can come up with an idea for synching the data with that other server, I only know I will be using tailscale on both unraid servers so we don't have to mess with opening ports on my friend's router, the the synching part eludes me a little, my rudimentary idea currently works rsync scripts I created with mouting points on the main server pointing to the tailscale ip adress of the backup server and synching this way but I have too many scripts and I Was looking for a more "elegant"solution....and yes I tried synchthing and it sux! the speeds are awful even when not in relaying mode
Thanks for the video, but I'm confused. Unless I did something I'm not aware of, there is a BACKUP / RESTORE under my Settings -> Community Applications that appears to be contained within default UNRAID already. I've looked at it and it appears to be very similar (but maybe not identical) to APPDATA BACKUP. Why not just use that, rather than install something that seems gratuitous (i.e. APPDATA BACKUP)?
I looked in a couple of different installations of Unraid and didn't find any backup/restore options within Settings -> Community Applications... If you are talking about the CA backup plugin, it was deprecated a year ago and the Appdata Backup plugin is the replacement, as it is compatible with the 6.12 and newer versions of Unraid.
@@AlienTech42 That is weird. I typically try to keep things pretty clean, but I must have installed something here at one time. I'll just follow your well-described steps and leverage the plugin you recommended. Thanks again. With a five-year old cache drive I think it is only a matter of time until I'll need this. Unraid has made me ridiculously lazy. I never have to touch it and I'm not sure I remember how I even setup my dockers. This will probably save me at some point.
I don’t suppose you could do a NFS shares video could you? I have an Unraid server (where my plex files are kept) and I want to host my PMServer on another Ubuntu machine that has quick sync - but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do the NFS stuff to get it to connect.. I can’t find anything online that doesn’t make my brain bleed trying to sort it out… anyways if not, thankyou so much for all you’re doing :) Mick
On your Unraid Dashboard tab, under PROCESSOR, you will see the CPU 0, CPU 1, CPU 2, etc. If you see more than one CPU #, then you have a multicore system. (Most everything is, nowadays) Each percentage bar listed is basically one core. Count the bars and you have your number of cores. My server has 24. As for how many to use, I run the backup at night, so I have it use all the cores. If you wanted to run it during the day, while in use, I would say to use half of the cores.
@@AlienTech42 good to know! I know that was a silly question, and I was pretty sure most processors are multicore these days, but I'm pretty much a computer novice and just wanted to make sure. So I appreciate the clarification! Love your videos.
I just recorded this month's videos, catching up with other requests. PMM / Kometa is coming. I am working on getting the video release dates on my Discord server so that people can see what's in the pipeline. discord.gg/kst8fMPx4t

Love the video. I've had to restore a few containers already so this will make it nice and easy now. Do you prefer this over easybackup?
Thank you! Yes, I do prefer Appdata Backup over Easybackup now, but they both work.
can you do a video on syncthing or rsync for remote/ offsite backups
Rsync would be great
Thanks!
No problem, enjoy that extra peace of mind!
thanks! great video
