I've been rewatching a lot of Scooby Doo lately, as an adult, and also as an artist, and I just keep having to pause to admire the background art. I remember thinking as a kid that these cartoons always looked like they started out with Great Plans then got watered down by studios & that the backgrounds were the proof of this. It would cost them $ to change them so they kept them after some bonehead made the rest of it all insipid. I could never remember the plot of any episode of any H-B cartoon because it always felt like every outcome was predetermined. That made the point of the show's very existence pointless.

And that’s probably the exact sentiment behind, “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”. Yeah they were probably paid a decent wage, but I’m sure they weren’t getting rich (with the time period here being LATE 60s and then into the 70s, for this show specifically) still said “fuck it, lets spend a week or so on this extremely brief scene, or still shot that’ll only be seen for seconds”

The focus is on background artists for an old kids cartoon but we’re still seeing artists being exploited and undercredited for work that may not even be made available or stay available to the public. • @Riceball01

This is because you're mistaking studio heads for creatives and studio for being art houses. In both cases, they're only interested in one thing, making money and cartoons/art just happens to be the way the make their money. As a result, they're going to do whatever they can to save money in order to maximize their profits. If you want pretty much just ofr art's sake then you have to look at the small indie studios, but you're not likely to get rich and famous by working at an indie studio. Well, you're not likely to get rich and famous at a major studio as a creative either but you'll likely have better pay, a more stable job, and better benefits.

There's distinctly one moment in an episode where like a black suit of armor comes to life that scares the shit out of me as a kid and gave me nightmares as like a 4-5y/o.
Then, I believe it was a movie. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets mentioned in this video but I haven't finished it yet.
Anyway, the plot has to do with zombies. Zombie pirates specifically maybe? The scene where they become animated and come to life fucked me up at maybe 7 or so years old. Like seared into my little mind how horrifying the imagery was for my underdeveloped mind.
It was right up there with the original Resident Evil game when the first zombie you encounter turns around. Particularly on PS.
The gray skin on the face is just so uncanny and unsettling. I mean, a lot of little details are, but that's the most overwhelming and apparent one. And I experienced even both back to back around the same time/age.
Which, even when I see the zombie in question in RE1, even as an adult, my first thought is always "Oh, I totally see how that fucking horrified me as a kid."
Can't speak on the Scooby Doo stuff as I haven't seen it since. Maybe I'd think it's silly now.
Granted, however, as someone else mentioned, I myself was also something of a more sensitive kid than others. I got diagnosed as autistic not long ago and that helps explain why I've always been the sort of lonely creative sensitive kid. So my experience definitely may not be universal.
Then again, on the other hand, my friend growing up was scared of Mickey Mouse. Come to think of it, so was my sister for some reason.. I could never figure out what's even remotely fear inducing about that, but different people are different I guess.

The long-awaited Scoob background art episode! I'm glad you were able to finish this, I know how long you've been working on it and I've been looking forward to it since you first mentioned it.
I want to note that it is never 'silly' to get heavy while talking about children's cartoons- Art is art, regardless of it's medium, and it all has a story to tell. Sometimes that story is light and fun, and often that story is not just deep but heavy, painful, and heart wrenching. It's just as important to look into both of those sides of the coin, regardless of its intended audience, when it was released or created, or whether it's considered 'background' or not.
These artists, who created and carried so much of the atmosphere of a cartoon that shaped and changed millions of childhoods, deserve to have their names spoken, and remembered. Thank you, for doing so, so that we may hold space, at least for a moment, for their legacy, lives, and passion.

GenXer here. Loved Scooby-Doo so much growing up. I even had Scooby-Doo bed sheets. It might have something to do with my fascination with the paranormal and spooky even now. I recall, vividly, getting up early on a Saturday morning, pouring a bowl of cereal with too much sugar and plopping down in front of the tube (on the floor, of course) to watch Scooby-Doo like a worship service. Daphne was so hot! And, as the video relates, the background art was seminal to my concept of spooky. Purples, water-colored clouds, no straight lines, a flash of yellow or orange in the dark. I was never scared. But I was immersed. Still love me some scary stories to this day.

Pockets of light equal pockets of life. Someone is home. As someone who spent many years on patrol in loss prevention for a gated community, if lights were on and we were concerned that someone was doing something we'd need to address, it meant we needed to be ready. It's a subtle reminder. You're not going to find an empty place.

What? I remember watching this at 4 and didn't find it scary.
I always just laughed at Shaggy and Scooby anticts, and it was always some dork in a mask.

1:26 hearing the name Jack Ruby opposed to Joe Ruby made me remember as a history fan an actual Jack Ruby. JFK was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald but before he could testify in court he was shot by a man named Jack Ruby and there's actually a famous photo of it. This was part of the fuel that lead people to believe there was some sort of cover up by the C.I.A. in JFK's assassination; personally I don't think any of the conspiracies are true, but people can believe whatever they want, who cares. Anyway thanks to anyone who actually read this, I know it's pretty random to write under a Scooby-Doo video.

Dude, you did AMAZING on this video. A fun, engaging watch with good notes, and even better points.
I've always loved when folks make a note to point out some more easily missed details... Especially ones like these that are so briefly seen, and more and more lost to time every single year.
Preserving art, visual or otherwise, is important. Preserving the memory of the people who worked on them is even moreso, in my opinion. So, from an overly-sentimental world builder? Thank you for ensuring that some artists are much more likely to be remembered. Nobody deserves to be forgotten.
Kind of gives me the same feeling of melancholy that I get when I read through old fairy tales... Yeah, we have a written record of stories that were passed around only verbally for years beforehand.
That's a wonderful thing, and I'm glad that we have them! Many of them are staples in animation, funny enough...
But honestly... It leaves me feeling a bit sad that the origins of these stories are lost to time. I mean honestly, they are likely DRASTICALLY different from the originals... And we never knew, and will never know, who made the stories first.
(Btw, if you DID happen to read this far? give The Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was a read, if you can tolerate the very VERY wordy phrases and nonsensical story beats... Shockingly engaging, and honestly the ending got me to ACTUALLY laugh)

Scooby-Doo Where Are You will always be a part of my childhood, this show entertained me, scared me, and as I grow up I really did begin to notice the general spooky atmosphere of the show, as a kid I was always watching Shaggy and Scooby’s antics, and getting spooked by the monsters, but as I get older I always watch for the mystery itself, watching the gang unravel the villains motives, and as mentioned the way the art melts into the spooky tone, I remember whenever the opening of Mine You’re Own Business would play I would turn off the TV because of how scary it was. But nostalgia tangent aside, Scott I appreciate how much credit, and passion you’ve given to these aspiring artists, who literally brought mine, and many kids childhood to life ( I’m 17 btw)

I miss the animation from the 90's-00's so much! Literal kids cartoons back then respected our intelligence more than most media we see nowadays. I swear Hollywood is Physically incapable of making nice movies & cartoons anymore. I miss the Era of creativity, of animation, when things made us utilize our intelligence. Kids cartoons used to respect our intelligence more than Hollywood does now. They used to be able to create animated Artistic depictions that showed the Human condition and that can connect us on a deeper level. It didn't matter what kind of character they were or creature or species they were. I don't understand who can enjoy these modern live action movies. Filled with so much disconnected CGI. Cheap cop out writing, acting, storytelling that is treating our entire audience like they are 2 yr olds that just need a pair of shiney keys waved in front of them for entertainment... it's a very bland & soulless way to entertain...
I can't stand what has happened to American media... It's an absolute shame that our entertainment industry & our creativity as a whole is now a complete shell of what it once was during the 90's & 00's.
It's pathetic that all of this has become the norm now. We are seeing Hollywood destroying everything we once loved (How about Hollywood actually listens to feedback?) I wish this wasn't real. I am ashamed and disappointed with how psychotic the entertainment industry has become... It really is such a shame
