Guide Numbers and Watt Seconds - Flash Photography Tutorial #3

  • In this Part 2 of the Speedlights vs. Monolights battle, we are going to compare Guide Number and Watt Seconds as a way of rating the power of your off camera flash. We are also going to discuss the recycle times of speedlights and monolights.
Monolights are routinely much more powerful than speedlights, because they are larger and able to generate and use more power. Unfortunately, it is VERY difficult to compare them accurately. The reason for that is that Speedlight manufacturers use a method of comparison called guide number which tells you very little about the actual power of your flash and monolight manufacturers use watt seconds for comparison.
Guide number measures the light that is reaching your subject. And watt seconds measures the power that the unit is able to deliver to the flash tube. Two completely different measurements.
But that’s just the beginning of the difficulty… Let’s start with Guide Numbers.
The way to calculate a flash's Guide Number is to multiply the distance x the f/stop. This of course is based on a manual setting at full power and an ISO of 100. Here is an example…. If your flash is 10 feet from your subject and you need an aperture of f/8 to get a properly exposed image - the flash's guide number is 80.
The problem with Guide numbers is that a lot manufacturers measure their guide number with the flash zoomed out to its tightest angle of view - which indeed does measure the most amount of light that the flash can create. But in practice - you probably won’t use your flash nearly as much zoomed in as you will zoomed out and since different strobes zoom to different lens equivalents you wind up comparing apples - to apples - to apples.
Monolight manufacturers don’t make it any easier to compare. Monolights and studio strobes are compared by a metric called watt seconds.
This number is even more unreliable because the measurement of watt seconds is simply how much energy the flash stores and makes available to the capacitor to power the flash tube. It is an unreliable number because different flash tubes have different energy efficiencies as do different reflectors.
In my opinion, the recycle time of a flash is the second most important factor for most people in deciding to go with a Speedlite or monolight.
In this video, I will use a Flashpoint320M Monolight and a LumoPro 180R Speedlight to show you the basic differences between the two types of flash units.

I spent a year planning out my camera upgrade based on the ability to have better high iso performance, better frame rate, and all the stuff other photographers I was following seemed to care about., What I really needed was better glass and a better lighting system. Found you a little too late .Glad to have this channel as a resource.

When I started photography back in the early 90s, the feature that most persuaded me to buy studio/mono lights was the modelling light where you could see where the light and shadows would fall. Those were the days where we still used 35mm film cameras and could not accurately check of how the photos would turn out before you had your film developed and printed unless you owned an expensive medium format camera with a Polaroid back. Today with digital cameras were you can instantly check your result does not make modelling light a necessity, in fact some reviewers of monolights don't seem to give this feature any importance anymore. In view of this I do think that for starting photographers, speedlights work just fine, they are inexpensive and relatively easy to use and a great way to experiment and understand how light and shadow work.

Most of the things explained in this tutorial are new to me. It's all so interesting. I always wondered what "GN" meant for my Yongnuo 565EX and I am sure that even if I had Googled it... I wouldn't have understood like I did with this tutorial. I will definitely try adjusting my exposure according to the GM and will try to learn how it is done. I do own a Yongnuo TTL flash and a set of radio triggers, but I find it so difficult to understand how "correct" flash exposure should be set and also...the "uselessness" of a direct bare flash makes it well...useless. I can't carry around soft boxes and umbrellas. All that is for pros. I am just a hobbyist and the science of current digital photography fascinates me.
Thank you so very much for another brilliant tutorial. I have learnt a lot from it.

Your stuff is great, Joe. I'm an older guy (43yo) and I'm trying to get serious about this and turn it into a business. The expense of some of the equipment is rather daunting, and I came to see if I really need to invest in monolights at this point. I've learned to accomplish quite a bit with speedlights. After your advice, I think I'll stick with them for the time being. I really appreciate your tutorials and all the information you share. I am a fan.

Thanks for this series it's been very informative and useful to me. Nearly 2 yrs ago I bought 4 cheap yongnuo 560-III speed lights along with the 560 TX trigger and I haven't looked back. I've not had a single misfire in over 1000 shots with one exception the operator (me) had the wrong group set. They're perfect for what I do and if I need more power I just mount 2 or 4 together to pick up an extra stop or two. I've added a couple of cheap battery packs and while I've never counted the shots I can get it has to be way up there since I seldom shoot at full power. I know I've never run out battery power.
Anyway thank you for sharing your expertise and knowledge of photography.

Thanks for this video, Joe! I have 1 Godox 300 ws strobe with Bowens Mount which I rarely use in my small studio. It is just too powerful even on the lowest setting. But the 2 Youngnou YN568 exII ETTL speedlights(Gn58) with 622c tx radiotriggers(ETTL/Manual) and the YN560(Gn58?) and YN460 (Gn30?) manual speedlights with the YN603c manual triggers are used all the time. The 2 first speedlights also follow me on travels. So I know for sure that it's very easy to buy too big and expensive for your needs if you are new to strobes.

Very much enjoy all your videos. Thank you for producing them, much to be learned from them.
FYI fun fact: The etymology of anxious is from the Latin word angere, anguere "choke, squeeze", thus the word anxious has a scary beginning. Also, Latin anxius refers to "uneasy, troubled in mind, anxiety, and the like". In addition, anxiety ultimately comes from the Latin angō, which means “I cause physical pain” or “I torment, trouble, vex, or distress. Thus anxious and eager are at polar opposites. Hope you enjoyed the anxious fun fact.
Oh, enjoyed your egg video as well, and I am looking forward to seeing your next video.

I'd say flash triggers are a must. I certainly feel as those my photography has improved greatly very recently because I took more control of my lighting (I've also been shooting much more regularly which helps too). If you're just starting out and can't afford flashes, triggers, soft boxes and the rest of it, you can still achieve great images just by being creative with natural lighting and something to reflect light like foil or white card.

Thanks for the awesome video Joe!
Just wanted to chime in that as an inexperienced photographer wanting to set up some studio lights for tabletop work, and maybe some portraits at some point, I decided to buy some Pocket Wizards and speedlights.
There are a whack of film camera speedlights that may not be TTL-able at all or with modern cameras for cheap. I bought 4 older flash units - identical, electronic - that let me adjust the power easily, and some older PW Plus II triggers - I think I paid an average of $50CDN for each. Soft umbrellas and stands from the world's internet marketplace, and I have a pretty respectable kit assembled over a period of time. Probably into it for $600 CDN or so now total. That's for 4 speedlights, the PW radio triggers, stands, boxes, umbrellas, brackets etc.... I paid the same for my one OEM dedicated speedlight. Just saying... It is an economical way to get started.

Thanks Joe for been so informative and entertaining , only recently discovered your Utube channel ,and was amazed at the real amount of useful content freely give compare to other utubers pushing there own products and image, I started using radio controlled yongnuo yn560 for a canon camera , as its my first step into lighting ,I love the freedom and effects I'm getting with my growing understanding of light. my friends are the same so it makes it easier and fun to try different effects and ideas , the only problem I would like to over come is to have my friends with Nikons join in , so my question is, if I get one of those little off camera hot shoes with the old style pc sink cord ,is it possible to use canon controller with Nikon just to fire the flashes and not damage anything. Thanks Henry

Ok. I've watched a bunch of your vids now and loving them and mentioned them rekindling my interest. Where are you getting your shirts, I love them, lol. You must have a hell of a wardrobe, nearly a new shirt in each video. Are they English Laundry or tailor made perhaps, they seem to be the same brand. Sorry to go off topic, still a compliment all the same.

That's why I went with Alien Bee's Digi Bee's cause Paul C Buff has always been very reserved in their power output. So for the money, yeah it's hard for me to justify a ProFoto B1 or D1 setup. Even though I know they are pretty powerful as well if you want the absolute best.

I love the video - very, very clear. Can you help me understand something about my Elinchrom monolight? I have a 400 w/s monolight, and it offers a "5-stop power variability" - on the back of the unit, I can dial in from as low as 2.0 up to 6.0. I'm assuming that's the number of stops of light it provides. But if I get their 100 w/s moonlight, it says it also offers a "5-stop power variability." I was under the impression that stops weren't relative. I understand that the 400 monolight is not necessarily producing a flash that is 4 times stronger than the 100 w/s, given what you've said here - plus there are some other factors, including recycling time. Ultimately, I just need to know, if I had both lights, and set the digital reading to 2.0 on the back, should I expect the same results from each monolight in terms of light output? Is there another factor that I'm missing? Also, if I have the light set to 2.0 and put two stops of diffusion material in front of it, does that neutralize the light? Thanks!!

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you Daniel Corey! The variability is within each strobe. So a setting of 2 on the 100ws is not the same as a setting of 2 on the 400ws. If you put a diffuser in front of the 400ws strobe - you could bring it down to the 100ws level or you could just turn down the power. My sincere advice - watch more of my videos - you are approaching lighting like an engineer, Forget the numbers - learn to SEE light and you will find success,

  • @alkohallick2901

Would you say the flash power of a speedlight is somewhat equal to the flash power of the Flashpoint 150w monolight? I've been using speedlights in softboxes for quite sometime with great results but I wanted to have modeling lights for a more professional appearance. I bought a pair of 400w monolights but they're just too bright for my needs even at their lowest power setting.

oh wow, you are super good in this. Question: I've using somewhat mediocre strobes like Jinbei HD600, I really curious what the real differences is to Profoto which is like 7 times more expensive, everybody says quality of light, but to be honest the times I shot with it, I don't see real differences. So why the heck are people paying those big brands when the differences are subtle.

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

LOL - it is because they are Zombie Photographers minh tang! Watch this video: th-cam.com/video/V6nuR20hyJU/w-d-xo.html Profoto delivers really pure light in a well built strobe that is grossly overpriced. With the color balancing abilities we have today - if you are not shooting something that requires precision color - there is no reason to use Profoto in my opinion.

As the track photographer for the local NASCAR short track, I"ve been using my Nikon D7000, 18-300 lens, SB910 and a pixel td-382 flash pack. the trouble I'm encountering is at night, even with the high end rechargeable batteries and flash pack, the 910 can't seem to keep up with even the 6fps of the D7000. I'm upgrading to the D500, and am curious as to whether or not you feel that a monolight might offer better performance in keeping up with the 10fps of the D500?
If a monolight might be better suited to my needs, is there one that you can recommend as a starting point? I'd prefer something more portable, as well as suitable for outdoor use.
