Hello…I am a certified surgical technologist. The instrument is pronounced Deeee-bakey. It’s actually used a lot. Always have on your mayo stand. I remember the program I was in. It was ALOT! I was overwhelmed too! I went to school, worked full time and went to clinical. I didn’t get much sleep. But I did it and so can you!
How was the school schedule from the beginning to the end? I’m Just starting out. I have an appt at Concorde career college. I’m 48 and I have to keep my full time job. How was that for you?
I’m in my first few months of the surgical tech program too! It’s definitely a lot of work in a short amount of time. I start my clinicals in September!
Interesting video! The school I work at has A&P one and two as pre reps. I took A&P and thought it was hard but you can do it. If you can find models of different parts labeling helps and for Medical Terminology I recommend flash cards. Good luck and so exciting!
Love your video!...I just started my Surg Tech program in April of this year. I saw one of your textbooks in the video..we are using that book also.....for Principles and Practice...the Fuller book....but we have quite a few books we are using. ..Yes...its alot of work...I agree...I study something everyday...we just started clinicals 1 day a week and class the other 4 days......everyone in my class...we all work for the same hospital that we will be a CST at...so we have jobs waiting for us...our hospital did a collab with the local college
@@Byqlowry Its been great!...Its alot though....the hospital we work at is a Level 1 Trauma Center...so we have 3 Main towers each with different specialties...we are starting out with 5wk rotations in each tower...Im in the HVN (Heart, Vascular, and Neuro) tower..my 2nd day...I saw 2 craniotomies...4th day..I saw an open Heart bypass...got to touch the Aorta...it was humbling....after this semester.. we rotate thru all towers...we will be placed in the specialty we like and Feel that we fit... I will say this...we only had about 6wks of Lab....learning the basics...like gloving/gowning, opening, set up...minor tray...THEN we started clinicals...So I will say ...pay attention in Lab..becuz when u get to the hospital EVERYONE in the OR room will expect you to know MORE than you do...IF/WHEN u make a mistake..NO ONE will know or care that it was your FIRST DAY IN THE OR....because ANY mistake could put the patient at risk...so BE READY...PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING IN THE OR...BECUZ IT IS THE SURG TECH THAT IS THE EXPERT IN ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE...and EVERYONE KNOWS IT...AND EXPECT YOU TO KNOW IT.!..SO THAT IF SOMEONE BREAKS STERILITY U SEE IT AND KNOW IT.... I FOUND OUT REAL QUICK...THAT IT REALLY IS THE SURG TECH THAT RUNS THE SHOW...ITS ALL ON YOU..YOU ARE THE LEAD....THE SURG CANT GO ON WITHOUT U. STAY FOCUSED, STAY CALM, DONT LET ANXIETY HIJACK YOU AND YOU FORGET WHAT U HAVE LEARNED..STAY LEVEL HEADED...AND TAKE YOUR TIME...SOMETHING LIKE DROPPING AND INSTRUMENT CAN COST U TIME..EITHER TO REPLACE OR FLASH IT IF POSSIBLE. GET PLENTY OF REST AND HYDRATE THE NIGHT BEFORE....JUST MY CENTS!...SORRY LONG POST
@@irenejohnson9728 thank you for responding! Clinicals definitely sounds overwhelming and humbling. We have started labs already and learned how to load a blade, scrub, gown and glove. We start learning cases in a few weeks, so I’ll be paying EXTRA attention! Thank you for the tips ☺️
Everything went well! I found a job within 2 weeks of graduating and started working 2 weeks after that! Been at the same hospital for a little over 2 years now
It’s going pretty well so far. I plan on doing a detailed video since I’m half through the program now. But time management is so important and studying must be a priority!
FYI Surgical tech school is a surgical tech student not a medical student. That is specific for medical school aka becoming a Physician/Surgeon. There's reasons why ppl say "Im a Nursing Student/PA student/Medical student/Rad Tech student". Youre not a medical student youre a Surgical Tech student. Learning medical stuff is not the same as being a med student
Thanks for that, Amanda! I’m aware that I’m not a med student, however I have some med student subscribers and friends who enjoy watching all content in the medical field. Regardless if they are a tech student, nursing student, or med student.

What’s the math classes you take in the program? :)
For my program, I didn’t have to take any math. If you go to a 2 year program, you will have to though!
I didn’t have to take math either
