My Garden Highlights - JULY

  • Bunny undertakes a revamp of the entrance courtyard, giving one of her topiary chickens a Very special perch. She explains why she loves the use of tree seats and how she uses a variety of designs in her gardens, using a range of materials from inexpensive plywood and woven hazel to bespoke metal like the one she uses here.
    Although Bunny plans to use bound Breedon Gravel here, in her inner courtyard she shows how loose gravel can soften a hard paving design and guides us through her Top 5 favourite plants for gravel. All are easy to grow and will tolerate sun or shade.
    Bunny then shows us her ongoing project to create a Growing Arbour, formed from two existing box balls and two bay standards that she has allowed to merge. Having re-utilised a redundant 20 year old arbour, she shows how to train the hedging so that it will form around the framework, allowing enough space for a small seat for two underneath.
    Finally Bunny shows what a difference two months has made to the box hedge that she heavily chopped back in her May Highlights video. Regeneration pruning at its best!

    Your garden is lovely and inspiring. I find your videos to be the most informative of many of the garden videos on TH-cam. My husband and I are so happy we have found you. My children would like to create some bird/duck topiaries for our little "duckling garden." I live in New England and hope to visit one of you lovely garden design when we are once again able to travel.

    Why did the Chelsea judges say tree seats weren't convivial? I think they are brilliant and work well in a smaller garden (where they are the focal point). This is because they can turn the focal point into a vantage point also, where you can enjoy your garden from a different perspective. When my mum had eye surgery and had to be careful to avoid direct sunlight, our tree seat was brilliant because she could sit in the tree seat on a fine summer's day, partly shaded by the tree, and move around the seat, following the shade, as the day went on.

    This is a beautiful setting & landscaping. Awesome buildings too. However, it saddens me greatly that it is yet another old farm taken over by non-farmers for their own pleasures. Farms should remain farms. It is the most important industry, & character.

    • @bunnyguinness
      @bunnyguinness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting point. We have the large old stone barns but the big working farm next-door has modern farm buildings. The problem is traditional stone barns are not great for livestock due to the lack of ventilation, they are too small for modern huge agricultural kit - the farmer who had them before us converted one barn into office storage because of this. We do keep some animal feed and hay etc in a bit of one though for our pigs, cows, chickens and sheep. There are few traditional barns left - many are converted into housing, but I think they are fabulous buildings when just preserved but it is a shame they can no longer be used for what they were intended for originally but life moves on. 🐂🐖🐑🐓🐇

    A lovely video again, I had a similar plant/weed grow last year between some slabs in gravel, at the time I thought it looked lovely and left it in bloom. Needless to say it seeded and covered my entire gravel slab area, weeds were popping up everywhere, I not sure what it was but I'm calling it a weed because its went everywhere I didn't want it too. I think I've finally got it under control again now. Be careful what you wish for lovely flowers can soon turn into a lot of hard work.

    Your Cephalaria gigantea looks much better in gravel than mine did in a richly manured bed (far too many leaves flopping over everything else in the bed!). Even though the bees adored it, I dug mine out this Spring. I wish I'd seen this video before, because I might have planted one of its many seedlings into a large pot of gravelly soil as an experiment.

    Lovely Video! Check out for Chaerophyllum temulum maybe? Take pictures from the plant, flower, stem, leaves. There are plant identification sides. Europen umbelliferae are hard to identify - some are tastefull some are deadly poisonous. I bought some in a very good nursery as unknown Beauty - cause no one could identify. Hope you will get the Name soon - I‘m curious. 🧐

    wait. Not convivial???!!! WTH is not convivial about encouraging people to gather 'round a tree and enjoy the company of one another and the tree, or to take a rest and observe the parks or gardens around them? I really admire British garden design but anecdotes like that make Chelsea sound incredibly stuffy and totally irrelevant. Hmmmmm. I chafe at all types of "man made rules" and judgements. LOL. I love tree seats.
