@CharlieC1331 Bob Knight said he told a GM of a team in the NBA that after coaching Jordan in the Olympics he knew Jordan was the best player in draft and he should draft him because he was very special. The GM said, "we already have a @ guard we need a center" , then Knight said "then play him at center". Now Knight didn't specify which team's GM he was talking about, but I think it was pretty obvious it was Portland. With such a strong recommendation from Knight they should have drafted him.
Saw an interview with Coach Knight back then where he said Jordan was the best basketball player he'd ever seen.......and he wasnt even in the NBA yet.
Isaiah talked about these games in NBA Open Court. First was about the great Bob Knight telling him about Jordan saying: "Look out now, this one's different" 🤣 And next was when Isaiah was playing against Jordan and said: "Whoa, whoa, holy shit!"
its a fact in the 80's that every team is in a drastic search for a center to build around a team thats why the 1st and 2nd pick went to get there own centers such as olajuwon and sam bowie respectively, thats why jordan came in as a third pick overall regardless of bobby knight's high recommendation. knight knew and was spot on.... JORDAN RULED!
Magic, Isaiah “hatin ass”, Bird, in their prime knew who MJ was before entering league. They know what storm was coming into the league. ..and have the to mention LBJ next MJ. Talking about beating a super team, MJ did that! They actually played 9 games, 84 USA team beat them 9, 9-0. Oscar Robinson coached the team featuring Magic, Bird, Isaiah in their prime. So you know MJ face extreme jealousy coming into league, a la “freeze out” all star game.
Man I wish they would put up the interviews with the NBA Allstars about these games. Sure would have loved to hear what Magic and Bird had to say about Michael and Patrick
Yep. They were among the last cuts on that team. In fact, they almost remind me of the 1960 team that had Jerry West, Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas. The last guy cut from that team was John Havlicek. I think at least eight guys from that team went on to play in the NBA. The only thing that keeps me from ranking the '84 team above that '60 team is the fact that they didn't play the Soviets.
After coaching the '84 Olympics, Bob Knight declared MJ the greatest basketball player he'd ever been associated with. Supposedly this infuriated Isiah, who played for Knight at Indiana, and this fueled an immediate rivalry that led to Isiah orchestrating the Eastern Conference freeze-out of MJ in the 1985 NBA All-Star Game in his rookie season. MJ rarely got any touches and scored 6 points. The Bulls played the Pistons two days later, and rookie MJ dropped 49 points on Isiah and company.
No, but Lebron can shoot and dribble like an off guard, rebound and block shots like a center and dunk and play physical like a power forward. These arguments are dumb. It's like arguing over which swimsuit model is the hottest.
I think the draft already had taken place. However, I remember a few years ago ESPN had a show called the Top Five Reasons Why... and the subject was why you can't blame Portland for picking Bowie over Jordan and one of those reasons was that they already had Clyde Drexler and their games were too similar. Also, Dean Smith pretty much kept Jordan under wraps at North Carolina and when he got to the NBA he finally showed how talented he was.
Bobby Knight imposed a pretty rigid structure on those olympic teams. It was obviously a good thing for the young players, Jordan credits him for teaching him a lot about defense, but you get the feeling that if he had just let Jordan create, maybe some pick and roll with Ewing, that Jordan would have completely taken over. I heard a story that Bobby Knight called Portland after the olympic trials and BEGGED them to draft Jordan. Told them it would a huge mistake to let him pass.
How would the game turn out now if college all-stars played NBA all stars? The game sure was better back then when you couldn't just drive with the ball and slam into the defender and get a blocking call every time. Now everyone just puts their head down and plays like football. Sorry Dr Naismith.
Not a big fan of MJ but @6:35 even David Thompson made an "O" face!!! MJ one of the GOATS This is the game imho opinion as a UNC fan that MJ knew he would be great in the NBA
I didnt notice that they were playing at the vet memorial coliseum. Cool. I remember watching games there as a kid. The madhouse on mcdowell. That was an awesome place.
@blaq7427 yes u hav a point there however jordan admitted himself that they did the right thing in not selecting him, the blazers simply had too many guards like their rookie guard clyde drexler. jordan just would not be able to work together with drexler
@blaq7427 yes you have a point there however jordan said himself that it was for the best. the blazers already had clyde drexler as a 2guard, jordan and drexler wouldnt have been able to work together. but i do agree with you partly.
well, they should have taken anybody except Bowie, but they definitely should have drafted MJ. I mean to think that you shouldn't draft the greatest player of all time because you already have another guy that's 6'6"-6'7" and can shoot, run, jump, and play defense is ridiculous. Oh well, I'm just glad MJ got his six titles and that Drexler got his one title with the Rockets.
Did not know about Portland having the rights to Moses, probably went down before I was old enough to really follow sports. Thanks for the trivia, that's quite interesting to note. Moses was an animal, I rate him ahead of many talented 7' softies like David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, and maybe even Kareem (Moses dominated the older version of Kareem).
This is awesome, great basketball from a better era. High intensity, inspired defense and fluid ball movement - everything looks just right, the way it should be. Save the and 1 crap for the playgrounds. I'd rather see a team with 3-4 guys which are good for 15-20 points on any given night than the usual "superstar" wing man who shoots 44% along with 10 free throws to get his 30 something while everyone else is standing around watching.
Zone is irrelevant if you can't put pressure on your opponent and aren't allowed to stay in the paint. Due to the hand-check rule, offensive players now have more space to operate. Even if they double or triple team you, they are not allowed to play physical defense. The three-second rule prevents big men from camping in the paint, which basically renders zone defense ineffective. The whole idea of zone is to force the other team into taking perimeter shots.
With all the rule changes however it's easier than ever to drive to the hoop because it's an automatic foul if they touch you on the way to the rim. Defenders often give the slashing player more room so that they don't get whistled for a foul. That's not basketball anymore. The defender is already at a disadvantage because he has to react to the offensive player's move. The Death of defense, read it: hoopshype(DOT)com/articles/defense_lazenby(DOT)htm
was it 84?if yes then mj was a rookie there. look how mature his game was at that time.and you watch this so called mvp now, still do excessive dribbling..sigh.
This video is absolutely mesmerizing to watch! You have to remember that the college (Olympic) players were on a mission, if the pro's had the same motivation and incentive it may have been different. That being said I still would of had a hard time betting against this group of college kids with Michael Jordan leading the way against anyone. And I have to agree with the other poster, how could any NBA scout watch this game and think Sam Bowie would make a better NBA player?!?!
@blaq7427 yes if u they could go back in time the blazers would have drafted Michael Jordan but there have been plenty of guys who were drafted 1st, 2nd or 3rd who arent known at all nowadays. and then there have been players like kobe who was drafted 13th...now look at him
@CharlieC1331 @CharlieC1331 clyde would have been an all star as a small forward. only reason he played big guard was because jerome kersey had developed so well. but great rebounder, passer, and floor runner. he'd have complimented mj well.
yes he was a good pick, he actually was the reason they passed on Jordan, thinking they had their scorer - they went to finals twice but could not beat the bulls with MJ - clyde did win a title though, with Houston!
I would love to have the whole game. Just a gem. One comment. That was a limited NBA all star team. There were no centers (Nance, by that time, was even playing small forward, and he is playing center in that game). Nevertheless they had Magic, Thomas, English, Davis, Aguirre and Nance. Pretty good team. Had they had Moses, Bird, Sampson and Bernard King, it would have been a differnet story.
The real reason they won so easily, outside the fact that Olympic team was stacked even for a pre-92 US Olympic team, was because they had a lot more experience playing as a team and playing together.
Portland must've been cursed - Sam Bowie!? Moses the original High School to NBA guy; he was famous amoung players for his tiny hands - he was a huge guy, however if you look at highlights, he had little girly hands - they say if he had mitts more fitting for a 6'10, 250 pounder, he'd have been the greatest ever - of course the Blazers missed out when two years after letting him go he was MVP for the Rockets...
This is such a cool video...I love when the announcer was saying he thinks MJ will be one of the greatest ever. He knows what he was talking about.
@CharlieC1331 Bob Knight said he told a GM of a team in the NBA that after coaching Jordan in the Olympics he knew Jordan was the best player in draft and he should draft him because he was very special. Coach Bobby Knight + Michael Jordan=Invincible.
Walter Davis, who actually had a pretty spectacular NBA career.
Yes he did. I grew up in Phoenix & got to see him play many times @ the Madhouse on McDowell. Including this 1.
one the best olympic teams of all time
Man I wish they would put up the interviews with the NBA Allstars about these games. Sure would have loved to hear what Magic and Bird had to say about Michael and Patrick
The Commentator predicted that Michael will become a Legend and it was. GOAT
Yep. They were among the last cuts on that team. In fact, they almost remind me of the 1960 team that had Jerry West, Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas. The last guy cut from that team was John Havlicek. I think at least eight guys from that team went on to play in the NBA. Man Jordan and Ewing really stood out for Team USA. I tell you one thing man the NBA All Stars looked over matched on that day.
If Ewing didn't blow his knees as a rookie I believe he would've dominated the league way more. Sucks! But great to see him and MJ play well!
Blow his knees?
Min 3:57 nostradamus predict the future🔥🔥🔥🔥

Ewing was going in!!! But Jordan is the greatest!!! Damn I miss him!!!
This was in 1984 before pro basketball players were allowed on The Team USA. In 1992 they put together the Dream Team, which Magic Johnson was on.
I agree. Look at early in his NBA career how quick he was. He had a HOF career, but who knows how good he would've been before his knees went bad.
@kthomas62 That's definitely not Hubie Brown. I think it's Billy Packer.
and no, Lebron can't pass like Magic
Yes he can
No, but Lebron can shoot and dribble like an off guard, rebound and block shots like a center and dunk and play physical like a power forward. These arguments are dumb. It's like arguing over which swimsuit model is the hottest.
***** Where were you in Lebron's first four years? Go watch some video of Lebron's passing skills.
I think the draft already had taken place. However, I remember a few years ago ESPN had a show called the Top Five Reasons Why... and the subject was why you can't blame Portland for picking Bowie over Jordan and one of those reasons was that they already had Clyde Drexler and their games were too similar. 83' Pan Am Games, Pre-Olympic Trials, exhibition against NBA-All Stars, and Olympics served as MJ's coming out party.
Hubie Brooks called it! 100%
correct about jordan. Game knows game.
That was Billy Packer doing Color. He’s the one who predicted Jordan would be an all time great.
"Jordan is gonna be the next Davis"
LOL
How would the game turn out now if college all-stars played NBA all stars? The game sure was better back then when you couldn't just drive with the ball and slam into the defender and get a blocking call every time. Now everyone just puts their head down and plays like football. Sorry Dr Naismith.
jordan and ewing was already NBA top players standart as college players.and michael changed he is shooting style after
Not a big fan of MJ but @6:35 even David Thompson made an "O" face!!! MJ one of the GOATS This is the game imho opinion as a UNC fan that MJ knew he would be great in the NBA
Rest in Peace Wayman Tisdale !!!
When you think that the comentator had no idea that michael jordan is going to be the GOAT.
It seems like he did have some idea.
I totally agree. I was a Bulls fan all the way but Ewing was a fucking beast!
Crazy how Hubby Brown said Jordan Could Be an All-Time great before he played one NBA game. WOW
billy packer
I didnt notice that they were playing at the vet memorial coliseum. Cool. I remember watching games there as a kid. The madhouse on mcdowell. That was an awesome place.
That was Billy Packard.
damn mike was killing them
MJ was already better than everyone else on the floor!
Another great vid, thanks.
Holy shit at that dunk by Jordan.
Old NBA vesus Future NBA Legends should be the title of this game.
@blaq7427 yes u hav a point there however jordan admitted himself that they did the right thing in not selecting him, the blazers simply had too many guards like their rookie guard clyde drexler. jordan just would not be able to work together with drexler
They all have freakishly long arms!
I disagree that the All-Star team was the weakest so far - they just played the greatest US amateur team so far!
@blaq7427 yes you have a point there however jordan said himself that it was for the best. the blazers already had clyde drexler as a 2guard, jordan and drexler wouldnt have been able to work together. but i do agree with you partly.

@kthomas62 u hear that too, so amazing, They now jordn's destiny before his irst nba game
3:10
UNREAL
wow i wish i lived back then this is so awesome how jordan flew :)!!!!!! and the referees look funny lol
Did not know about Portland having the rights to Moses, probably went down before I was old enough to really follow sports. Thanks for the trivia, that's quite interesting to note. Man,Usa blew out Nba team
Mj is best ever never human player. He is just God of Basketball
I believe that is Alex English, not Walter Davis 0:52
Pretty sure Jordan was the best player in the world before he even played an NBA game
HMMMMMM, if so I wonder why it took him like 7 years to win his first championship?
Zone is irrelevant if you can't put pressure on your opponent and aren't allowed to stay in the paint. Due to the hand-check rule, offensive players now have more space to operate. This is basketball my friends. This is how my people play ball.I'm 41 and all of my boys play like this.
Do you have the whole game?
I forgot all about Walter Davis.
Amazing video. Do you also have the highlights from the game between the 92 dream team and the college team, which the Dream Team lost?
i know about the dream team. i didn't know that 1992 was the time when nba players were finally able to play in the Olympics lol
Jordan is more than a legend its simply Mister Air Jordan!
Can't believe Barkley got cut
@CharlieC1331 When you have a player like Jordan you draft him and make room on your roster
2:07 the speaker said:people say jordan is going to be the next davis
who the heck is davis?
Jordan was drafted in 1984, not 1985. Ewing was first pick in 1985.
"Some say Jordan is going to be the next (Walter) Davis."
@YesIRap patrick ewing is on that team dude

Proves how Michael Jordan IS the best of the best
was it 84?if yes then mj was a rookie there. look how mature his game was at that time.and you watch this so called mvp now, still do excessive dribbling..sigh.
mother of prophecy...
mj flies in the air. hes a freak
how come they don't do this anymore?
They stopped thiswhen they Finally allowed NBA players to play in the Olympics.

FYI...it was 9-0. For the college kids.
2:09
Wow. Forgot how big Nance's hands were. That's sick.
@seinffeld that was billy packer.
@kthomas62 that was billy packer.
what the hecks going on? i cant belive they played nba players. whos is on the rosters?
3:54 That comment aged well #NBA75th
@blaq7427 yes if u they could go back in time the blazers would have drafted Michael Jordan but there have been plenty of guys who were drafted 1st, 2nd or 3rd who arent known at all nowadays. and then there have been players like kobe who was drafted 13th...now look at him
2 12, HA HA HA I wonder if the Jordan guy became the next Davis
Walter Davis
Hubie is the man! This video is called foreshadowing.
@cyber6sapien it was a good choice for them not to draft jordan because they had too many guards.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THAT JORDAN KID FROM NORTH CAROLINA
I agree. Remember Kobe had the three point line (Wilt and Gervin didn't). Also you could handcheck Gervin. It's a foul if you handcheck Kobe.
Wish I had seen some Alford playing in there.
Olajuwon is a Hall of Famer and no offense to Sam Bowie, but how did the scouts from the Rockets and Blazers watch this game and pass on Jon Koncack?
@CharlieC1331 @CharlieC1331 clyde would have been an all star as a small forward. only reason he played big guard was because jerome kersey had developed so well. but great rebounder, passer, and floor runner. he'd have complimented mj well.
2 bad they dont have events like this today

David Robinson and Hakeem were pretty fast from end to end.
Clyde Drexler WAS a good draft pick. 14th overall in 1983.
Magic is not on Team USA??
Team USA was college kids in 1984. Magic was on the NBA team.
hey that micheal jordan guy is pretty good.lol.
I remember these exhibition games the olympic team always beat the pros. The olympic team took it more seriously the the NBA team.
@CharlieC1331 Why wouldn't they work ??? Jordan could play SF or PG . They would have been a great duo
