Savage Reign is a 1995 futuristic-themed competitive fighting game released by SNK for their Neo Geo arcade and home platform. It was ported to the Neo Geo CD, as well as for the PlayStation 2 along with its sequel Kizuna Encounter in Japan only (as part of the Fūun Super Combo). This compilation was re-released in the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 4 in December 2016.

Current fighting game focus only on combo, it is nice to see one with innovation on stage (such as two layers).

Until Super Smash Bros. established platform fighters as a genre.
This game was one I really enjoyed playing on the Neo Geo CD when I opened one. The stage backgrounds tell such rich storytelling in this game world. While the AI beats you constantly down, there is just something so exciting to keep playing in this world.

Love the character design and special moves
It was surprising when this game actually got a sequel as it wasn’t altogether that successful. I think it had more to do with the controls being difficult to adjust to from other games at the time and they just sometimes don’t feel responsive for no reason. It’s also difficult to accurately and consistently attack your opponents with line changing attacks: a worry mitigated because Carol’s hits on both sides. The AI as you can tell was an issue as well (he played on the average setting level 8 is much worse) most special moves were safe on block and the AI NEVER falls for any mind game tricks, tick throw setups that are off by 2-3 frames, or most pressure sequences. This makes Carol look like a low tier character when she isn’t. Also the AI loves to spam line changing and line change attacks which are usually safe as well.
So, why do Carol and Nicola never appear playable again? It’s easy. They were the least popular. I played this in an arcade that had the cabinet for over 1 year, and I was the only Carol main. No one used Nicola and there were 4 Gordon mains. Apparently, Carol and Nicola were the least used and that’s why they never appeared a playable again. For anyone looking to check this out: the controls take FOREVER to get used to and still can feel clunky, and the AI will always be on your ass. That’s what you have to deal with and get used to.
Pretty frank assessment. I thought it looked good and the plane-switching would be a change of pace if they could get the handling right.
Yeah Kizuna Encounter is a significantly better game and it's not even close. They got rid of the plane switching but improved the controls, the AI, and the pacing, plus the tag team fighting is a cooler concept. I kind of wish they kept Carol as I liked her even with her dorky weapon, but Rosa (and Kim) is a vastly superior character so.

ah yes, the legendary boomerang karate style of fighting. i couldn't help but laugh at the description in the trailer. that said, some cool move sets in this game. different planes are always a mixed bag, but overall, pretty cool game.
Well, this is a different use of the environment. An interesting attempt by SNK. And those legs tho...
The sound fx from this generation were the most memorable element of all to me. You hear it and it takes you back

I have the ACA version on Switch and I went through the movelist and one of her moves is literally called "Swan Dive Dumper". Gives me a laugh everytime.
Savage Reign sounds pretty close to its Japanese name Fūun Mokushiroku. Full title in Japanese will be localized as Savage Reign: Genesis Fight.

Chung's design used to annoy me back in the day. but in hindsight. It makes sense. this game takes place in the future, so of course the old guy is going to dress like how he did in his youth. Assuming he was born in either the 80's or 90's.

I will love, to see this concept again, but with a different company, it doesn't have to be, Street fighter, but what weapons, I love the whole concept of a fight game, being a platformer, that doesn't go the super smash Brothers root, another thing about it, I've just described, power Stone, that tells me, this game, is basically, more or less, predated power Stone.
