  • Did you know the Dance Dance Revolution (Dancing Stage) series was censored in many ways? Come and see these cuts uncensored!
    This video takes you on a history trip and presents a behind the scenes analysis highlighting the controversial differences of all DDR game versions!
    =================================
    Update:
    The lyricless After The Game actually pre-dates After The Game Of Love with it originally appearing in NBA In The Zone '98. Upon reflection, there's too much speculation, around the use of After The Game in all but one Western release, rather than After The Game Of Love, to call it censorship.

    This video doesn't even scratch the surface of all the censorship and changes that occurred during localization of DDR games over the years. DDR Extra Mix alone would have been butchered to all hell if it had been released in the US in those days...they'd have to essentially censor the entire game as well as remove several songs for it to be 'presentable' to the US audience. Also, the Dancemania album art in this game has a lot of booty showing right in your face, not to mention some lewd imagery of the nurse for passing nearly impossible challenges. I didn't start importing Japanese PS1 and PS2 DDR games until DDRMAX2 (US) was released...because by then, I was fed up with the huge disparity between the JP arcade machines and US ports; one of the worst cases, which I thankfully didn't have to experience, was the disappointment known as DDR EXTREME (US).
    In any case, thanks for making the video and pointing out a couple of things that were censored. It would probably take months to make a video assessing every bit of censorship that occurred between all versions of the DDR games.

    twilight zone's bg change actually stems from extreme ac which was a officially JP-only release that came out before the song's american debut, extreme had space issues so they cut out bg videos in favor of reusing more bg videos and sprites that take up less space, the max2 us cs bg is just reused from extreme ac as a way of making coding the bg script easier

      also injection of love using a instrumental mix can be considered censorship, as it's a song from IIDX and usually konami rarely makes radically different versions (imo hina mix feels alot more emptier and has a diff vibe without the vocals) when crossing over songs from other bemani games, and the original song has a problematic english verse (the infamous truck me line is a huge meme and source of debate in the bemani community too), and the (e) version also could've been made for extreme 2 as well but was held off

    Another point of censorship: the Xepher music video.
    Towards the end of the video as seen in its original beatmania IIDX environment, you see a person in red facing the screen and thrusting his blade down (probably to stab and kill someone, who isn't seen onscreen). This scene has been cut from the video in all DanceDanceRevolution versions where Xepher appears as a playable song, starting from DDR/Dancing Stage SuperNOVA, no matter the region (NTSC-J, NTSC-U or PAL) or support (arcade or console). The difference is only a split second, yet is fairly noticeable. (slo mo may help you spotting it)

    You've got it backwards with After The Game Of Love. It wasn't censored, "AFTER THE GAME" is the original version of the song, from a game called NBA Power Dunkers 3. Konami then took the song, added lyrics to it, and put it in DDR as "AFTER THE GAME OF LOVE".

    Here's an odd little censorship nugget -
    The japanese version of DDR 3rd Mix and the Asian version of DDR 3rd Mix had two different title background images for the song "Oh Nick Please Not So Quick". The japanese featured a guy turned to his side with a gun in his underwear and the Asian version featured the same guy in yellow pants. The censored image went on to be the background image for the same song in 4th mix.

    For reference at 6:25 the anime is Gurren Lagann (a modern anime classic). At the point in the story when that intro video for the anime (shown in DDR) occurs the red haired busty girl is Yoko Litner and is aged 14-16 (actual age is of dispute) later in the series she is in her 20s due to a time skip. Probably because shes under-aged the DDR video removed the cleavage. At 6:38 the character with the blood on his face is Kamina and in the episode he actually does have blood on his face.

    I'm honestly surprised you didn't mention the reason Dance Dance Revolution is called Dancing Stage in Europe, because the name change is very much related to censorship.
    It's because the acronym DDR gives off a very different image in Europe because East Germany (the thing that was behind the Berlin Wall) was called DDR, short for "Deutsche Demokratische Republik".

    Those games were censored seemingly at random. You'll see lots of stuff that got removed that are just as tame as, if not more than, other things that got through just fine. Either the censors just did a really half-assed job, or they didn't actually want to censor it but were forced to by their higher ups, and thus did the least amount of work neccesary. I'd guess the former, but only because I know so little about the actual censorship process that I don't know who those higher ups would be.

    Another censorship that wasn't mentioned. In DDR Supernova 2, they had another anime song called Baby Tears which is the opening song for Sky Girls (this is because it's a re-arrange of another Baby Tears they had in DDR). However, a notable thing is that even though DDR uses the same opening video from the anime, they changed the part where it shows the three main girls of the anime. For all three girls, the original opening shows them off from top to bottom. However, in the DDR bgvideo version, before it gets to the groin area, the video switches to a scene from the anime featuring the girl they were showcasing, most likely due to the anime OP version seeming a bit too "lewd" (and I would assume it's because their suits do kinda give a lining on their butts). This happens in all version the song appeared in the game.
    You can compare the two from the videos below

    Actually, all the Japanese versions of DDR definitely use the word "bitch" in the song "Blow My Whistle Bitch." The song itself was edited to sing "baby" instead of "bitch" for all American versions, but I lived in Japan during the DDR boom, and I distinctly recall all arcade versions of the game singing the word "bitch" there -- and I seem to recall the home port on PS2 doing the same thing.

    • @CensoredGaming
      @CensoredGaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wyrdwad Dude, I think you're misremembering. Here are a few Japanese versions, this is an arcade version th-cam.com/video/FPVtf-Sssmo/w-d-xo.html and then a console one th-cam.com/video/Qj5eet8sG8w/w-d-xo.html

    • @CensoredGaming
      @CensoredGaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wyrdwad Oh yeah, those two versions plus the US DDRMax 2 are actually the only versions where the song has appeared which means you are wrong sorry to say.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Censored Gaming
      I am 100% certain I'm not misremembering. My friends and I used to make fun of the song a lot. Maybe it got censored in later releases of the game, but I know for sure that the lyrics within the song were originally "Blow my whistle, bitch." The inflection on the word was even different, since "bitch" and "baby" have different syllable counts, so the word "bitch" was more drawn-out and sounded... actually really offensive.
      I'll see if I can track down the original for you.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the original version of the song, at least: ROxmvoiDsSg
      And this was DEFINITELY in both the arcade and home version of the game in Japan, at least at first. I probably still have my Japanese version of DDRMAX 2 PS2 somewhere, so I can double-check this, but I'm absolutely 100% certain it hadn't been changed to "baby" in the original Japanese releases of the game.

    • @CensoredGaming
      @CensoredGaming  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wyrdwad Well, I'm not sure what to think then. I've just shown you footage from all of the Japanese games. MAME and other sources don't list any revisions to the arcade game and you're the only person I've heard report this whilst, if you Google it, you'll see a lot of people saying the opposite.

    Once my friend, who's white, walked down a street in Japan and then a little kid ( maybe 10 years old ) walked up to him, called him "baby" and flipped him the finger. Apparently the kid saw his chance to act "foreign" and my friend became the test subject. How does this relate to anything you ask? I've heard people calling others "bichi" in Japan but it's not really common. I guess they just love throwing in some random foreign shit once in a while, especially English. So there's lots of songs MADE in Japan that use English words through out the song for no special reason really.

    after the game of love is way better with the lyrics and theres many kids i know in person and seen on tv that are facinated by guns when either its from a game like gta 3 or jak 2 or their parents collect guns and for proof just look up that one episode of supernanny on youtube in which a kid mimics shadow the hedgehog and carries a cap gun while riding his little tikes car and blood is only good if its an arcade like game like ddr, time crisis, mortal kombat house of the dead or sonic if its a realistic, modern or cute game like call of duty, freedom planet, spookies house of jumpscares or uncharted then its bad also you forgot one more sensorship there was a song in ddrmax called do it right which had the twin towers in the background in the japanese version but due to 9/11 they had to replace the song with the remixed version and then remove the world trade center from the song background in the some of the later american revisions/builds of the game other than that sexual scenes are only attractive if a girl is in a poofy petticoat pigtails and/or frilly bloomer panties like minnie mouse and demonic scenes are cool if they are done correctly and if no character that is cutsey, adorable, girly/childish or kawaii is turned evil, creepy masculine or scary unless its a movie like chucky but not a game like spookies series unless its the oppisite way around and like an ugly ducking story about a creepy skeleton who wants to be cute and inocent

    There's a little bit of misinformation in this video. You say DDR MAX came out in US and Japan and while games titled DDR MAX did come out in US and Japan, they are radically different games. You briefly mention that they contained largely different song lists (true) but honestly the song differences are so radically different you can't even call them the same games. The Japanese home console mixes (all of them) are much more arcade accurate whereas US mixes tended to feature entire different setlists. Still interesting stuff, I don't know if I'd call all these localization changes straight censorship but there's some good information here.
