One of the biggest tips I learned was to try to keep your fader motion technique the same regardless of the scratch. It helped me understand combos a lot better

Hey man excellent video! Wow I really needed to hear this. Almost an identical story here, I've always been very strong and confident with closed fader scratches and I have had the similar hang ups. I've gotten a lot better in the past few years forcing myself to do open fader drills, but this explanation was excellent for me personally. It's so weird how you can fundamentally understand the mechanics of a scratch but it really takes an ah-ha moment to find the right focus and muscle memory to make the training efficient for you personally. Your cuts are incredibly clean for someone who recently learned this. I'm jealous of your chirp orbit combo and I'd love to see more videos of how you approach thinking about your combos. I'm gonna be practicing cleaning up my two clicks using this. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you! I started turntables at 11 years old and self taught. I stopped after 20 years and then discovered that I was trying to recreate this scratch the closed fader way! Like you, I was doing it wrong for decades much to the detriment of my wrist and frustrated brain - trying to push my hands beyond physics. 😂

Interesting enough I discovered how to 2 click flare earlier this week for over roughly the same amount of years. Though to be fair I haven't touched my decks for over 12 years now. Only recently did I fix both tables to teach my younger cousin how to scratch. Thank you for sharing what you've learned as I'm sure there are others who have hit and will hit that wall on the scratch journey.

wow, good explanation, i didnt realize that what you discovered is exactly the same way i learned how to 2/3 click flare as well. instead of trying to as you put it “roll” your clicks, you basically are doing fast transforms, to 2 click orbit is just a double transform forward and backwards pacing your record hand with your fader hand and not some kind of special double clicker trying to click as fast as possible while catching up with your record hand. 👍 nice explanation.

Those type of combo scratches are dope, can you make videos on how to do small combos of scratches that sound good together? (like multiple tutorials of was that go from amatur, beginner, advanced, Pro, and then to you expertise. Lol
Really enjoying the scratch tutorials, I used to be able to do some kind of basic stuff on vinyl and now that I switched to midi/standalone I've had to go back and pretty much just start over. Five years of not spinning at all, plus jog wheels being half the size of most records and lacking the tension and feed back of turntables throws me off. It does force me to go back and unlearn bad habits though.

It's funny you post this video, I have the opposite problem with doing closed fader, but I kind of think simular to you with the chirp motions.... A 1 click flare is like a full chirp movement on the fader, but 1/2 the record movement... (you gotta start slow and get the motion) - then after that a 2 click is like a flare with a stab or 1 click transform in between the "chirp" motions of the 1 click flare... You should know your 1 click before your 2 click, cos its funky!

I started my scratch journey 2-3 years ago using my right hand on the vinyl and my left hand on the crossfader. I've been struggling with double time 2 click flares for months, but I switched over to my left hand on the vinyl to mess around one night and did it within minutes because (as it turns out) my right hand was so much smoother on the crossfader and my left hand was mad stiff. Now I have to start over and recondition my left hand muscle control for all of the other scratches... Hopefully I'll come out of it ambidextrous, but I'm starting to enjoy being a lefty on vinyl because my scratches sound alot funkier with my right hand on the cross fader... Can anybody relate?
Hi, I'm Claudio from Italy, congratulations for your videos which are always very clear and inspiring, I wanted to ask you if you tried scratching on the pioneer flx10 and if you were happy with the jogwheels? because I bought it recently and the jogwheels have a sensitivity problem for scratching, in practice I am forced to apply more pressure than is needed to prevent the jogwheels from continuing to move forward and therefore making me lose the right point of the sample which I use for scratching. If I keep the pressure on the jogwheel too light, it doesn't stop when I would like to stop it or simply bring the sample back to the right point. I'll start by saying that I have always used pioneer without any problems and the last controller I used was the flx6 with which I was able to scratch perfectly without any problem... do you know if there are any tips or utilities that allow you to set the pressure on the jogwheels correctly? @@priyonjoni I understand, but I see you moving the fader to the center(ish?) a lot while scratching, when it seems like you'd barely need to move it even a centimeter away from the side, since it's instantly on/off....I wouldn't call it wasted motion...but that's what it looks like. Just wondered if you liked having a long throw for some scratches or if there's some other reason why you move it really wide sometimes (when you barely need to move it to stop the sound). Unless it's my imagination?

Hello. My dominant hand is essentially in a pinch-link position on the crossfader. I’m using my thump like a spring with my index finger doing the “tapping”. On the jog wheel, my hand’s home is at the 9’oclock position. That’s the left center of the wheel. And it moves between 7 and 12 o clock when scratching.

That’s the thing. You don’t have the break any habits. If you can chirp and transform, you can do an orbit.

It is also important to know the movemrnt of the hand, not just the fingers, cause it would be impossible to be fast enough with just clicking
-What camera are you using for over-head?
-Do you put your camera on the ceiling? Or are you using some kind of stand or grip?
I know you have your crossfader cut set really sharp. Is there a reason why you take the fader all the way back over to the center?
I never set it back to shallow curve. Even when I'm not scratching. I mix with the channel faders.
