I can't tell you enough how well done this series is. It's fantastic, detailed, clear, and easy to understand. Hoping to make my first sets this coming winter.
I've been having trouble loading my steer cable for several years I was never instructed properly as you have done in this series I appreciate your knowledge and education you giving us
I love these snare school videos. I’m learning so much. As I don’t have to many trappers a round me
that can teach me these things first hand. Keep up the great work.
you have answered more questions in detail than any other channel. Always impressed and appreciative.
John River Thanks I appreciate that!
This is awesome. Just dropping a comment in now, I watched this a while ago, and have bookmarked it for when I can get the materials to make them!
A bunch of new ideas, thanks so much.
Thanks for sharing the tool you load with. I was taught to use a nail pounded into a stud and I can't tell you how many snares I overloaded. Just glad you can salvage the $ parts and reuse. Your way seem much more user friendly. Thanks!
Good instruction. Clear, concise and no BS.
2bonosc Thank you sir - I appreciate that!
Trapping is EVIL! Oh, wait....meat is delicious! Never mind. Great videos, I've been watching your instructional videos for about 4 days now and you have really opened my mind to the benefits of trapping for food. Keep up the great work.
Watched this even though I had made some last year. I had used the 7x7 and agree the 1x19 better. Used the drilled washers for a lock. Glad you said the first few you try to form you may mess up as I did. :) A mistake I picked up on watching this again is when I formed my loop used a screwdriver in a vice and formed the whole loop not just the last few inches like you did. I got carried away thinking if a little was good a lot was better and that was not the case. In the end caught 2 beavers that were avoiding the Conibear 330's that had been doing lots of damage around here. They did taste good too.
Thanks for posting these.
harleynuts No problem buddy - Glad it was useful. Funny how even a bad snare can outperform a professional steel trap, huh ? :) Good job!
The Meat Trapper Yeah I had 2 nice paths they were following to get into the water. Used the fence posts from Tractor supply in the tall grass right beside the path and got them after a week or more springing the 330'3 with sticks.
This is a great tutorial. Thank you sir!
The instruction was SUPERB! It was just what the doctor ordered. :-) Thank you for sharing.
imasurvivornthriver Thank you very much. Glad everything made sense and was clear. If something is not, let me know.
Need to see it more and more to learn and try
Nice job and again, thanks for sharing.
I appreciate the knowledge share that you provide to all of us. Looking forward to getting your "Okra Fed" butt out in the field, bringing home both the fur & the meat. ...LOL As always High Quality Vid, filled with High Quality Info! Thank, Bulldog
Luther Hitt lol - Definitely been eating the okra! Cant wait for cooler weather my friend. Take care!
Thanks for the great lesson. Much appreciated.
Larry342516 Thanks for watching!
Ok couple questions sir 1st where you cable terminates at the lock with the 180 bend, does that not weaken the cable at that area have you ever had a problem with cables breaking there? 2nd when your loading the cable your pointer finger is kind of the the side of the bar stock not pinching the cable and bar straight up and down? Hopefully that makes since. Loving this series sir thank you for the work that you put into your videos
great series and good tips
Wow great details
Ok, wasn't sure if u could get one that small. Very good video. Thanks
+John Mattson These are the ones I am currently using with very good results: www.fntpost.com/Products/Barrel+Swivels. I am using the #8 size swivel with these clips that fit perfectly www.fntpost.com/Products/Lap-Links,+Quick+Links+Other+Connectors/Spring+Hooks. Hope this helps explain.
great video look forward to #3
Wallace Vivian Thanks - looking forward to getting out in the woods!
i like that ,a very nice way too get started tks.
+david gillenwater No problem - glad it was useful!
That was excellent
Thanks for the info
Your videos are especially important now..
Tooth proof wire for fish makes the best traps
Awesome! Thanks!
Great informative video!
Efish3 Thanks!
Wont the paint give a odor to the cable that will scare off animals?
I googled the most popular cable for snares and it said 7x7 so I baught a thousand ft roll. Your saying 1x19 so I'll buy a roll of it. Where do you order yours from? Thanks
Excellent ! Thanks :)
darn good - liked!
Very useful Tks
Another A+
mrhuntinjunkie Thanks - glad it was worthwhile.
What size vinyl tubing.?
Very good video I am thinking about buying some c 5/64 1*19 cable for beaver and a micro lock
Christian Sullivan That would be a great combination!
awesome video Meat Trapper where can I get those barrel swivels?
FEBLessed Music they're generally in all fishing equipment areas of retail stores.
this may be a dumb question. But pennies count. If there is a loop remaining out of the double ferrrels after catches, then the second part is unnecessary, no? Wouldn't single ferrels be more cost efficient and technically just as effective?
John River Good question. Single ferrules are cheaper but a double ferrule has twice the surface area and holding power. With a hard fighting animal, that can make the difference between a catch and a loss.
Other than cost, why the Bbl swivel instead of the standard trap swivel?
The barrel swivel swivels at both ends and does not bind up as easy as a standard swivel. The standard snare swivel is designed to be an anchor point for the snare and a swivel. It simply not as effective under tangle conditions as the barrel swivel.
Question what size of barrel swivel do you use?
#6 for beaver, #12 for hogs. I get them from SouthernSnares.com. Call them and tell Brian I sent you - he will take care of you and only sells the best - no cheap junk.
Went looking for cable at F and T and could only find 7 by 7 . They had nothing in 1 by 19, where do you recommend I shop for snare /trapping products? Thank you.
I buy it in thousand foot rolls: www.fntpost.com/Products/Cable/1x19+Galvanized+Aircraft+Cable
+The Meat Trapper I have to look up if they ship to Canada...
You connect it then with an S hook?
You can use an s hook to replace the snare after a catch and use the same extension cable. I use a quick clip. It's easier and faster than an s hook.
you said you prefer a 5/64 1x19 cable. But most of the companies on line use 7x7 cable. Is that because you build all of your own snares?
+Jim Lytle I like the 1x19 cable because it holds a better loop and is stronger than 7x7, allowing me to use a smaller diameter cable which is harder for the animal to see. I build my snares because it is cheaper and I can build them longer or shorter as I need, and I can use the barrel swivels rather than snare swivels. Hope this helps - if you have more questions just let me know. Thanks!
The Meat Trapper 55
Do you think a #9 bbl swivel would hold a coyote?
+John Mattson I do not know as I have never used a barrel swivel on a yote. I do know that none of the guys that I know who snare them use barrel swivels. They use standard trap swivels (box swivels). Since beaver are in water they cannot pull nearly as hard as a yote. Sorry I cannot offer a definitive answer - but I'm mostly a water man.
I'm in Louisiana and the guy who puts on tutorials for our club uses #8 barrel swivels for coyote without any problems. He tried the #6 barrel swivels but they end up binding and locking up from the tension...
did I miss the part about how long the snare wires are??
He said 6ft at the beginning I believe.
hey meat trapper, you only use a snare one time?
Yes. It is too kinked up after a catch to reuse.
Thanks for teaching how to build a simple and effective meat gathering tool. Would a 1/0 fishing swivel be enough for Raccoon?
👍
Could you send me a drawing of wich way to thread a washer lock and the loprolock
+Timothy Schnaekel Check out this link and let me know if you have questions: www.trapperman.com/trapperman/Making_snare.html
10* ! More vids! Definitely pro trapping vids, versus some wannabe bushie and single garden wire traps.
John Lord Thank you very much. I appreciate the support!
