Even thou i been around for over 20 years in the animation industry, Im really rather new to game engines. How exactly do people go about creatingthe narrative cinematics used in the cut scenes in games like The Last Of Us, GTA, Farcry etc? It seem like no matter where i looks i cant seem to be able to find any samples of people making actual narrative based cinematics. All the demos i see, just seem to show how to trigger a cinematic, or how to manipulate the camera, or how to move a round a character with pre-built walk cycles from asset store. and so on. So what do i do if i want to do a story. "Bob goes to the kitchen, grabs a knife, argues with wife and threatens to stab her. She cryes out Nooooo think of the childrenz and crap like that. Actual story driven narratives? Are there animation tools inside the engine that would allow me to add a character, add the voice, move them around etc? How are people doing this? Is this something only the big games do from the big studios cause it requires so much effort and tools or crazy pipeline or can regular animators do stuff like this on their own?
Ibis Fernandez I would think just to cut some audios together to the right length and make long animations for each character that are triggered during the cutscene
@@nameheregaming1106 for my application im using rendered video of my characters. I have found that video doesn't conform to the main FPS and it starts to lag. this makes it fall out of sync with the animation.
I know it's called Matinee, I know it is. Every time I remind myself "It's called Matinee, it's called matinee." But every single time, without fail, the next time I read "Matinee" without preparing myself for the word I read "Manatee." I think I'm just going to call it Manatee all the time now, it'll be easier.
On the level scripting content example map, they did a short animation that sort of blended with the character's location to create a smooth transition between gameplay and the animation. Any ideas on how they did that?
Thanks, this was exactly what i needed! But for some reason my HUD doesn't go away in the cutscene, even though I checked that option (UE 4.9.2). Would you know why?
How would you make it where you put points in the scene where you want the camera to fly through and you can press space bar to scroll through those points
I created a frame and moved the camera a bit, rotated it for about 45 degrees, but when I play back the animation, the camera makes TWO full rotations around its axis in the opposite direction to arrive at the destination. How do I fix this? Also, how do you edit the curves like in max? tnx EDIT: Never mind, it works fine with quaternion interpolation
Sir Tesla.. how to export out Cutscene scene with camera like u do in this video to a watchable video, like AVI or MP4 somethin like that.. so we can call it "Trailer"
hello, like the tutorial... I am making a horror game with a spotlight attached to my character to represent a flashlight. The rooms are unlit for the atmosphere. So how can I create cutscene where things are visible?
+KnightOfNostalgia That may require some animation on your part. After you animate (say an airplane), put the animation in your level normally. Then create the matinee actor and the camera cutscene, and there you go. Just put the camera in position so that it can view the airplane.
Hey guys, so i got UE4 now it's "Free" and i've been playing with it for a couple of days now and i'm starting to get a good idea of everything in the engine, and i've made a fully functional game, but i only have basic cinematic's, now i know im not going to be the best at day one. But i do not know how the AAA's do their cutscenes, so if anyone has any knowledge on proper cutscenes rather than a moving camera at a static object, that would be awesome, as this is going to really help with my own game and help the development of it
hey Tesla , I'm trying to learn making video games. so I have some questions that I would like you to answer :D First : when making a cutscene , is it possible to add dialogues to it? Sec : Can you make your character move however you want him to ( move fingers , head , mouth , toes...) third: can I make a cutscene on Blender and put it on Unreal Engine? Thank you
You probably figured this out already but there are record and video buttons on the right-most side of the Matinee toolbar. You have to set up your matinee in the level blueprint but it's easy to do and there are lots of tutorials floating around for it.
can I save my matinee cut scene and load it into another map or has everything have to happen inside the level I make my matinee actor in? I cant have like a sketch Level separate from the pretty graphics Level?
the way ive done it is to put the camera in the persons head and try to keep up with the persons animations youre trying to do its a bit hard for when youre moving but if youre standing still and just doing animations its easy
Is it just me, or is the audio complete screwy in this video? The left audio channel (meaning the left speaker of a computer or headset) is outputting a really high pitched sound. Sort of like a really annoying fly. And the right channel has the posters voice, but I am getting some static when he talks. I have tried both speakers and a brand new headset and nothing changed. Anyone else experiencing this too?
I'm very sorry about this, it's very frustrating for me. It's not in the original video and it only happens when it is uploaded to youtube. So i don't know if its messing with the audio channels in the processing as it seems to boost the audio in comparison to the original video. I'm working on sorting it out in my latest vids
Tesla Dev Ok cool. No problem. I just thought you might want to know about it. To help improve your videos and such. Also, i noticed that when I turned down the volume on the video, it seemed to fix the broken single audio channel. So I guess if anyone else has this issue, they can just turn down the video volume until TH-cam can fix the video uploading system. Thanks for the tutorial by the way. I was finally able to hear what you were saying after a while of frustration and accidentally messing with the volume. Can't wait to see what tutorial you upload next!
Whoever you are, wherever you're from, thank you. You've just made me pass my first year of uni!

Ibis Fernandez by animations I meant the things you use to move your 3d characters in game engines to do things like walking or jumping
@@nameheregaming1106 i don't understand your response, did you accidentally respond to my comment while attempting to answer someone else's comment?
This makes me so nostalgic because I'm using Unreal Engine 4 to make my new game and just seeing how easy it is is so *awesome*!
that's not what nostalgia is lmao
Nice tutorial. Its great to see the engine getting more TH-cam coverage!

uzimonkey wow.
Thank you so much! This video just helped me finish my final project for school. :))))
CONGRADULATION GOOD LUCK TO YOUR SCHOO PROJECT.
This is a great look at how to use matinee.
your very basic tutorial is helpful
PERFECT. Thanks so much for this-- it's exactly what I need.
is there a way to translate the players camera to the cutscenes camera, so there is no cutting?
thx so much dude! :D made a first cutscene for a video game ever...
great tutorial men, kudos for you.
On the level scripting content example map, they did a short animation that sort of blended with the character's location to create a smooth transition between gameplay and the animation. Any ideas on how they did that?
thx for this i'm new to unreal 4.
Wow, just amazing. Thank you!

Great tutorial! Just one thing, how do I make it so that the player cannot move/shoot ONLY while the cutscene is playing?
Select the matinee actor in your map, and you should be able to "disable player input" in the properties on the right.
Tesla Dev Thanks :) I will subscribe for your help
Sir Tesla, I'm using Ureal 4.8, why couldnt I find the "disable player input" button in matinee properties?
+Tesla Dev Wow, That sounded too simple, Game engines don't try to make things simple lol
where are the properties?!
how do i seeing the character while it playing the cut scene? (im noob at this!)
This is very useful, thank you so much :) !
I was wondering if you could tell me how I disable cinematic mode once the sequence has finished playing? i.imgur.com/n98McUr.png
add a destroy actor and destroy the matinee, that works for me
Awesome tutorial, Thanks Tesla!!!!
Thank you so much for the great tip!

cpuld you make a tutorial on how to fade in and out using matinee?
I created a frame and moved the camera a bit, rotated it for about 45 degrees, but when I play back the animation, the camera makes TWO full rotations around its axis in the opposite direction to arrive at the destination. How do I fix this? Also, how do you edit the curves like in max? tnx

Hello is there a way to make it so when you press a button on widget it plays the matinee
Sir Tesla.. how to export out Cutscene scene with camera like u do in this video to a watchable video, like AVI or MP4 somethin like that..
so we can call it "Trailer"

your voice sounds like fitz from agents of shield man
I don't understand. I make the keyframe at 2 seconds, I move the camera, but when I hit play after moving the camera the camera doesn't move at all?
How would I make it so when they first start the game it plays the cutscene?
Is it possible to display the matinee to the entire server at the same time? I really need help and I already tried the AnswerHub and nobody answered!
Can this be used to make Machinima?
Thank you so much, i love you TT

Fantastic. Just what I needed. Thanks. Actually I just sent you a private message asking for advise on this :-)
Once completed... does Unreal have a way of exporting the cutscene?
Curious about this as well, I need the video footage for something outside the game.
You probably figured this out already but there are record and video buttons on the right-most side of the Matinee toolbar. You have to set up your matinee in the level blueprint but it's easy to do and there are lots of tutorials floating around for it.
Oh cool... I will check that out. Thanks!
I use OBS to record part of the screen?
can u use this method ot render out a scene for a showreel?
Just use some kind of screen capture.
can I save my matinee cut scene and load it into another map or has everything have to happen inside the level I make my matinee actor in?
I cant have like a sketch Level separate from the pretty graphics Level?
also, great tut, I'll sub :)
great one!
how do i create a new blueprint ??? i cant open one.
you go to blue print then it should say level blueprint open that
good job!
Awesome!!!
what are your pc's specs?
IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Tesla Dev does not work for me give some thing that might help please
How can I make the cutscene First Person.
the way ive done it is to put the camera in the persons head and try to keep up with the persons animations youre trying to do its a bit hard for when youre moving but if youre standing still and just doing animations its easy

Next thing you know, someone is trying to make movies off from this. That'll be cool
Awesome. Thanks for sharing; Jesus Christ Bless : )
can't get over Mati(knee) when it's pronounced mati(nay) hahah
The player is still moving!
someone asked this in the top f the section the answer is there.
For 4.25 users matinee is no longer a thing
Use the level sequencer
I dont get camera 1
when I click add key.
did anyone tell you your voice is awesome?
thanks
nvm got it.
doesnt work
can someone help me please
Huh... The unreal engine 4 seems to not require much knowledge in programming because of the blueprint system and the movement system.
well every tutorial that I watch, none of them show real programming actually, more like drag and drop.
Are there any drawbacks? It seems to me to work just fine, finding a bug is probably a nightmare if you blueprint everything on a big game.
Good lord, dude , you are way too quiet
