House passes GOP bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote

- The House on Wednesday passed a proof-of-citizenship requirement for voter registration, a proposal Republicans have prioritized as an election-year talking point even as research shows noncitizens illegally registering and casting ballots in federal elections is exceptionally rare.
The legislation, approved largely along partisan lines but with five Democrats voting in favor, is unlikely to advance through the Democratic-led Senate. The Biden administration also says it’s strongly opposed because there already are safeguards to enforce the law against noncitizen voting.

Because your vote doesn't count unless you are registered to vote first. That is how it works. You can filled 20 ballots and none will count unless there is a previous entry in the voting database validating that you are a register voter and only counts for 1 vote, all other 19 will be ignored and later you will be contacted by state officials. What makes your vote count is the registration record, not just filling and submitting a ballot whether in person, mailed, or drop box.
You must be a U.S. citizen to register to vote. No one walks into a polling location and votes unless their name/address appears on the official voting rolls.
They are talking about registration to vote. You cannot even follow the idea, and it's already in place. I live in NY and it's the first requirement to register to vote. Same in PA and CT. Useless, waste of time and money.

I am a native born US citizen who also holds Italian citizenship. Voting is one of the privileges of citizenship ! I could not vote in Italian elections( Italian citizens residing outside of Italy can only vote through the local Italian consulate,) until I presented my Italian passport to the consulate and registered there as an Italian citizen. Proof of citizenship is required in every country everywhere in the world in order to vote. This is not rocket science! The Democratic Party is obviously trying to have non-citizens vote for their own political agenda.

There are multiple interviews, multiple reports, and multiple proofs of people who don't have a citizenship that are voting. Its not redundant when the bill-of-rights and the constitution are literally being ignored. So to safeguard it more, they are passing another law for it. As a French citizen I was baffled to learn that you don't need to show your ID to vote in the US, now I am baffled to learrn you don't even need it to register ... This is insane.
Because to even register, you need to be a US citizen, all of which is proven when you register. For your vote to count, you need to appear in a previous list of voters unless you register at the poll. This is why in-person voter fraud is rare and not widespread. The bill is redundant and a waste of time and money. It's a clear Republican attack on voting rights and aims to make voting more difficult and to disenfranchise voters.
Of course you need to show some ID when you show up at the voter poll. What state are you talking about?

They may asked for the address to verify in case there are multiple people with the same name and last name in the county. After that you go vote.

Legal permanent residents should be able to vote. If they have to pay taxes like the rest of us and have all their rights this country offers why should voting be any different? I would vote against this bill

Same here in Colorado, you need a license to fish, and you need to have an ID to get the license
It is different at all locations. I do not need ID to cast a vote at my center. My wife does at hers. Everyone’s arguing over this and both sides are right. You absolutely HAVE to show proof of citizenship to register but not to vote. Illegals or even legal citizens could find voting centers like mine and just choose a name that’s not crossed off. Could even go in over and over and do this till you’re recognized if you wanted. I was a ND citizen for three years and the place I cast my ballot just west of Minot was as home. So I’ve been one of them people screaming for 20 years you should be required to show ID when voting. This cleared up alooooot of voting fraud cases over the years for me.
I forgot to add my wife and I are register voters in the same county here in Pennsylvania. But because we own multiple houses we go to different townships. My drivers license is to a house by my mother’s. Never changed it because I got her to start voting 20 years ago and it became a tradition. My wife is registered to a house we have up north.

Isn't the point to create longer lines and, delays at the voting booths to limit how many people can cast a vote at polling locations? Why would dems want that. Republicans already use rules like "only one voting location per district" to make it so cities can only count a portion of their voters while rural areas can count everyone who wants to vote. Requiring higher standards like proof of address would prevent many homeless people from voting. That would also be bad for Dems. I don't see any reason why the Dems should support a bad faith bill that is exclusively based around using unfounded fears to allow voter suppression of their constituency from their political opponents.

Once you register you do not need to re-register each voting cycle unless you move. Less than 5% of voters register on election day and you don't need to wait until election day to register.
With respect to election fraud there is no crime if there is no evidence of crime. We all know less than 5% of other crimes are ever prosecuted. You don't support this legislation because the ease of voting fraud would be dramatically reduced and/or exposed.

You can get those without being a citizen. The Law forces the DMV,DOL,DOS, and Districts to check BCs or PPs for citizenship status. Before registering someone to Vote .

No, if you are working, you must have a Social Security card. If you own a car and drive, you must have a valid driver's license. To vote, you must be a citizen. Is it NOT a constitutional mandare. Then you must show proof if citizenship. Naturalization Card or birth certificate. At the DMV, I had to bring a certified copy of birth with a press seal to receive a license to five. But alas, it does not show I am a citizen on my license to drive. Get busy.

No it isn't. There is a Federal law meant to protect Native Americans which says States cannot ask for ID or proof of citizenship for a Federal election. They can for State or local elections though. So currently it is 100% possible for illegals to vote in any Federal election. This bill would stop that. They had to do this because there’s a few states that have told their drivers license and welfare offices to give out voter identification cards with the drivers license and ebt cards rather they are us citizens or not and most of these states don’t actually require proof it’s just a honor system and when the illegals get the voter registration card they mistakenly think they are eligible to vote. Unless the poll workers catches it illegals will be voting, that’s why we need this law.
California is one of those states, not sure if New York is one, but both of those states are important in an election.

As a non-American, I find it baffling that there has been any debate over this in America for so long.
Facts: Obtaining a drivers license does not require this proof, and all the proof required to vote is valid state id. So yeah this needed to happen.
In some states when you fill out forms to get a driver's license, something that even non-citizens are allowed to do, there is a little box that asks if you want to register to vote. It requires no proof of citizenship to fill this out. In fact the employees are forbidden to ask an applicant where they're from because they say it is racist. The result is that a non-citizen can now register to vote. This was not an oversight it was done on purpose. So yes this law was needed badly.
