And just coming across this cover by Madison....sheesh...give me a box of tissues and let the tears flow. I’ve never been more proud of, or worked harder on, any musical endeavor I’ve ever been a part of. I met Madi some 6-odd years ago, in a window of life where I was really struggling to keep making the music I wanted to make, and not get dragged down into doing something I didn’t believe in just to make a living. In that sense, meeting 16-year-Old Madi was like meeting a prophet. All the realness and truth bundled into this quiet, precocious kid who seemed born lacking the self-conscious need to make music like anyone else does. Just pure curiosity and truth and unbridled optimism about harmony and tone and songwriting. Her songs and her guitar playing back then were like a young sun, pouring out too much beautiful light to be contained. My task from then on was to help her learn to harness that endless light and point it in the right direction. We’ve made 4 records since then. She’s never shined so marvelously as here. What a gift, to watch my friend become who she is today. We made this record live to tape (with a few choice but limited overdubs) almost all at Sonic Ranch near El Paso, with David Boucher engineering and mixing. Abe Rounds and Alan Hampton brilliantly held it down on drums and bass. I played a mishmash of keyboards and even braved a few 2nd guitar parts. ‘Song in my Head’ we did back in LA at Barefoot, with Ted Poor and I as the rhythm section. Robbie Jeffers flew out and took all these lovely, dreamy photos. Tejas Leier Heyden was my right hand man, and I wouldn’t have made it without him. Mike Viola, Madi’s Verve a&r, guided is with a clear vision and steady hand. There’s certainly never been an a&r guy who really understands music and songwriting the way that Mike does. So, take a listen. As one of Madi’s earliest believers, I feel the same way about her now as I did then- that she’s the truth, and her voice will be with us for the remainder.
@@michaelrubin2976 The guitar has a rubber bridge, I believe. Madison is known to tune down from standard, so I'd guess it's strung heavier than normal. No direct knowledge here. She did an IG lesson for her song "Pin It Down". In that she said that she strung an electric tuned to C standard with flatwounds (013 - 056 I think she said) Correction: She said she used 11's
YES! Wonderful tone all the way around! And brilliant interpretations on these Wednesday covers! Just brilliant! One suggestion, a different camera angle that does not mask your face with the microphone.
I almost think she forgot to turn on the reverb on the guitar... But man this dry, slightly dull guitar sound fits the mood in a pretty interesting way. Triggers teenager emotions in me ;) Great work!
