  • Time to talk about BOLTS! How to cut aluminum bolts to size, and what to expect when you start slinging broadheads instead of field tips. If you can't tell already, I like my arrows and bolts to be on the heavy side for hunting.

    Good video. Educated and well informed. Shows that you don't need to spend hundreds or even thousands on a bow that will work in the field and will respectfully bring down game.

    One thing I’d suggest is to “clock” your broadheads to your vanes, consistency is the key. If you mentioned I missed it

    I have same crossbow I use 18 inch allen carbon arrows with 125 grain 3 blade broadhead the jaguar seems to like them as I get good groups out to 45 yards also great video thank you.

      These crossbows tend to like the lighter broadheads, if I ever get a chance I'll test out some different arrow lengths and tip weights. I've got a really heavy set up now and it hits like a freight train up close, but runs out of steam once you get past 20 yards. Plenty of momentum, but the trajectory leaves a little to be desired.

      So since I have the tyro recurve wich calls for 420 grain. I can cut a 20"in 2219 down or just use the 20" as is and be fine? I'm just worried about not being at the minimum 420 grains.

    Wiggy, you mentioned that there is no elevation adjustment. In fact, there is. The knob on the right side under the rail is the elevation adjustment. You may need to move the rear sight backward or frontward to effect the desired change. If it is behind the knob, it will elevate it. If it is in front of the knob, it will depress it. The entire rail tilts due to a cam on that knob. I'm not sure how precise it is, but it may be enough that you don't have to do much Kentucky sight adjustment. I have a 3 dot red dot sight on mine and single red dot sight on my daughter's. I may try the open sights with her as we just got hers and she has never shot with a red dot.
    Good luck this fall on that nice buck!!

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      By golly you're right! I forgot all about the rail adjustment knob because I never used it, lol. Like you said, they're not the best as they don't "track" very well due to their design, but they're better than nothing.

      It seems like most people go with the plastic vanes, and they do well in bad weather, but I like the actual feathered fletching as it tends to be a little more forgiving and easier to work with when it gets old and beat up. At some point I should really get a fletching jig and put together some stuff I really like.

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty easy to do. I know a lot of people who shoot 20" bolts with this crossbow without any problems, but they're also using 100gr broadheads, many using mechanical broadheads so they don't have to rezero when shooting both field tips and broadheads. However, since I shoot a broadhead that's over twice as heavy, it cases a spine issue with the longer bolts. Also, I don't like my bolts to extend beyond the foot stirrup when loaded. Less chance of it getting caught on brush when I'm hunting. Thanks for watching!

  • @NinjaHempKnight

    I have the same crossbow that I bought from a friend. Do you have a video on how to sight in the Jaguar? I don't understand what the radial is on the side marked from 2 through 8 that tilts the red dot scope. Does the 2 stand for 20 yards, 3 for 30, etc? Do you sight it in on 0? I need help !

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't currently have a video on how to sight it in, but that dial on the side tilts the optics rail as a type of elevation adjustment but it doesn't work very well and i rarely ever use it. In a perfect world the 0 would be where you zero the sights in and have minimal drop on your trajectory, the 2 would be for 20 yards and 3 for 30 yards and so on, but that doesn't really seem to hold true. I have mine set to 0 and my elevation is just about right at 20 yards and I just aim a little higher if I need to shoot further, or aim a little lower for closer shots. Are you using the open sights or do you have a scope installed on yours? If you have any kind of optics like a scope or red dot, all your adjustments for zeroing will be made on the optics and not on the bow. There should be two covers on the scope, one on the top and one on the right side, that's where you can make adjustments to the optics. The elevation will be on the top and the windage on the right side. If your shots are hitting to the left, you move the adjustment to the right, if you hit low, you move the adjustment up and so on. It's basically the opposite of zeroing in open sights.

    • @WiggysWilderness

      It would be fine. The 16" aluminum bolts are about 10 grains heavier than the 20" carbon bolts. Either works just as good. My current set up with this bow is the 16" aluminum bolt with 100 grain muzzy three blade broadheads. I believe mine weighed in at 388 grains total.

    • @WiggysWilderness

      Carbon arrows require a high speed cutting wheel. That's one of the reasons why I stick with aluminum when I can. You generally don't have to cut down bolts if you don't mind the extra length, unless you find some that are just ridiculously long, or shoot really heavy broadheads like I do.

    great video, i have a question, I bought a man kung crossbow off amazon. (if u run a search u will see it). Shoots really high, I would aim almost to the ground and still it would hit the top of the target. Came with 14" 2 aluminum bolts, I was wondering if I bought 16" bolts or even 20" bolts, would it shoot lower (heavier). Also some people on the Internet was saying to use a flat nock instead of the moon one. Any Advise.

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's difficult to say for sure. Heavier bolts will drop faster than the lighter ones, but if you're shooting fairly close you may not see a real difference. I can't really see from the picture on Amazon, but it may have the same rail adjustment/tilt system that the jaguar does, if that's the case, there should be a knob on the right ride of the crossbow just under the optics rail. You may have to slide your rear sight to the front of the rail, then turn the knob a few clicks to tilt the front of the rail down. If you've already done that and you're still shooting high, you would either have to figure out some way to modify the front sight to raise it up higher than it is, or look into getting a scope or other optics to give you more adjustment. I had a standard rifle scope on my last crossbow for years with no trouble (I would just stay away from the cheap red dot scopes). With that being said, I would definitely look into getting some longer bolts, 14" seems really short. You could easily run up to a 20" bolt with that bow as long as you're not using much over a 125 grain tip (heavier tips than that may cause a spine issue with longer bolts, which is why I kept mine around 16"). Aluminum bolts will be heavier than carbon bolts too.

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, on the nock issue, you're not likely to see a big difference between flat nocks and half moon. Some bows require one or the other, I always go with what the manufacturer recommends. People are gravitating to the flat nocks these days because they can be indexed in any way when you load them as opposed to the half moon nocks that have to be loaded the same way every time. Also the flat nocks can be aluminum which cuts down on how much they'll wear out, whereas half moon nocks are plastic. I've never had an issue with forgetting to load the bolt with the index feather facing down and I've never had a plastic nock wear out... So I just go with what the manufacturer says.

    • @oldcutler100

      Wiggy's Wilderness Thanks alot , On your video, u have the rear sight almost in the middle of the scope mount. I was trying to move the rear sight closer to the middle and it wouldn't budge. I am going to take a second look. thanks man

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      When mine came, the rear sight was separate and it just slid into place. I've since moved it to the rear of the optics rail so I could adjust it at little. I was hitting a little low and wanted to zero the sights a little further out. The problem is that now it's a little too close to my eye and it's very hard to see, so I may give a thought to putting a scope on mine just for ease of use.

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't attempted to use the scope that came with the crossbow because all the cheap red dot scopes I've tried before didn't last through an entire deer season. One or two people on here have told me that the scope that came with the jaguar was junk. Just about any scope you buy should be better. With that being said, if you're not planning on hunting with the bow, there's no problem starting out with the red dot that comes with the jaguar until you can get something better. I definitely wouldn't hunt with it though because you run the risk of wounding a deer.

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since I use very heavy 225gr broadheads, the spine (how stiff the bolt is) would be too weak and could lead to damage if I didn't shorten the bolts. With average weight broadheads it wouldn't be an issue.

      I don't think there are replacement pieces available for the scopes. I checked the Man Kung web page (man kung is the actual company that makes these crossbows, even though they're marketed and distributed under "southland archery supply" here in the US) and I found the factory replacement red dot scope, but there was no price listed and the product description was wrong and said it was a 6 arrow quiver... These scopes have a pretty bad reputation so most people change them out with pretty much anything else. I use the pin sight, but any other red dot would be better than the one that comes with the crossbow.

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally you don't have to cut the bolts, but I do since I shoot an unusually heavy broadhead and if I didn't it would cause a spine issue with the longer ones (too much flex). Also, cutting the bolts just makes it easier to carry through the woods by keeping everything more compact.

      Wiggy's Wilderness One of the reasons, I bought the Man Kung, is because they use to make crossbows for Barnett. Instead of paying 250 for a Barnett crossbow u will paying under 100 for a Man Kung, and u r getting the same thing. Not all models of course.

    Why do you feel you have to cut your bolts down to 16" bro? A 22" bolt will fly and perform so much better I find. Nice vid tho 👍

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I cut mine down because the broadheads I'm using are pretty long, and very heavy (3" long and 225gr). Leaving the bolts full length could cause them to be under-spined, which could be a potential safety problem, and long bolts with long broadheads are just one more thing to snag on something. For most people using broadheads that are normal length and weight, cutting the bolts would just be a matter of preference.

      Ah I didn't think of that, I have a decent stash of carbon bolts so don't normally have to consider that issue

    Little more length equals more weight equals more kinetic energy which equals more penetration. Just my two cents.

      I got mine from a store called Rural King for about seventy dollars, I checked their website and it looks like they're on backorder at the moment. I found them on Amazon and Sportsman's Guide and a few other places too, but the price has been raised to well over 100 bucks! It's a cool crossbow and all, but I'm not sure I would pay some of the prices these places are listing right now.

      Yes it's the same bow. Made in the same factory with a different name slapped on it.

    what can you hunt with this bow?

    • @WiggysWilderness
      @WiggysWilderness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on what's legal to hunt with crossbows in your state, anything smaller than grizzly bears. It would be well suited for deer and wild hogs, anything you're likely to get an archery range shot at.

    20 inch bolts are fine and prob shoot better due to longer arrow less swinging in the rear of the bolt

    in the state of Ohio you cannot hunt with bolts under 18 inches....check your game laws before you get started.

  • @boots_4_me
    @boots_4_me 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok. I thought this was an archery video. Not many bolts that they sell now are aluminum. Most of the bolts I’ve used is made of carbon fiber! That little bow is not going to kill anything. I wouldn’t even consider that a real crossbow. How can you use that to ethically kill a deer with one shot? You’re literally using iron sights. Who does that? Just saying.

  • @levislack9151

    I do not recommend hunting with this crossbow I used it for about 2 years and threw it in the trash it does not have enough to kill a deer do not wing that big buck with that bow buy a real crossbow.

      If you can't kill a deer with this bow you have issues.

      @@johnnywishbone932 yeah that's what I was thinking. Took all kinds with old white tail 2 compound. At 55#-60# draw weight. I know it not crossbow but it doesn't shoot nearly as hard as this jaguar 175#. I just pick up. Got two slightly used no bolts arrows for 117$.
