Many have asked how to start this blanket and about the clamp. If you watch the shoulder bag weaving tutorial this is how in most working projects you start and finish the blanket. There is also a tutorial on how I made my clamp on my channel.
Alison Russell's Craft Channel : hi Alison, thank u for the wonderful information and loads of wonderful ideas ! Where is Bathgate? I am in Oregon, 🇺🇸 USA! If I were to send my scraps to you I will need to send it internationally I am assuming. Thank you again for the awesome ideas! XoXo form beautiful Pacific Northwest USofA
It is in Scotland in the United Kingdom Yes it would have to be international but apparently if you check the part where it says its a gift it is much cheaper to send. I appreciate it but don't go out of your way thank you xx
What a wonderful idea! I received weaving sticks for Christmas, but seeing this video makes me want to go find pens so I can try this. Thank you for being so encouraging and relatable!
I'm so glad I came across this... I've been wanting to have a go at a peg loom, but was sure I would never be able to afford the equipment. Now I will definitely be able to give this a go.
Wow what a brilliant idea using the felt tips, would never have imagined something so lovely as your blanket could have been made with them, thank you for the inspiration
This was really interesting. I had never thought of weaving with just sticks or pens. Your accent is really fun to listen to too. I enjoyed your video.
Maria this has taken me by surprise by the many many views it has had. I didn't think it would be quite so popular. I think it is because it is so simple an idea and cheap but has amazing results. The clamp I made is fantastic to hold all these pens then I put the clamp into the stand. In total it cost me £4.95 £1.95 for the pens and £3 for the embroidery stand from the charity shop. The rest I already had the scraps of wood for the vice and the bolts. You don't even need that you can weave with quite a few make strips of weaving and sew them all together. xx
Hey Alison, it's genius just because it is so simple! - About a year ago, my husband made some round pins for weaving, and also a holder for them (holes according) but we found the wood a bit rough. So we haven't made much more than one scarf. But now that I found your channel, we are looking for felt pens and will surely transfer some of them into weaving sticks once we find a set! Thank you again. :)
your welcome did you try sanding your wooden sticks then give it a rub with some wax paper? this helps to smooth them down. I had a few wooden ones and some were rough I used very fine grade sand paper.
You rock Alison. Thank you so much for showing how to use the felt pens as a weaving tool and how to weave and in the process you have saved me money as well.
Wow! Love your videos! Just learned how to do this today and I have already decided to add this to my available crafting skills. Thanks so much for the effort you've made to school us!
Thank you. I am planning to make a big square of these around a big canvas frame I have so I can do other weaving. I will use the pens like doweling sticks. Dowling is expensive and these pens are a quarter of the price. I won't need to put holes in the pens though just glue them into the holes I will get drilled all around the wooden frame.
You could make a square frame drill holes and glue them into place and make a pom pom blanket loom frame from them instead of nails I am gong to try that too.
Thank you so many love the accent. One lady turns them on so her toddler can fall asleep. I don't know if I should be happy about that hahahahah I know it's for the accent it is very soothing.
Haha someone else who gets excited waiting for wool to arrive! Brilliant video, wonderful reuse of used up and dried out pen cartridges. Keep 'em coming! Going to check out John too!
Four months ago I found a random video of an old celtic woman weaving on a giant loom. I watch carefully at her actions, learning quickly. It changed my life forever
That is great to hear. Have a look at my other videos on my channel. Try the blankets I show you how to make on the looms I have. They are good to sell too.
Thank you, I don't have a large income and my channel pays little towards new supplies so I have to be very cost effective. I love to pass the ideas on to others.
And the best thing is, you can use the felt tip insides to make ink for painting or dyeing ! Just use ¼ pint of boiling water poured into the individual stick (or use 3 or 4 of the same type e.g. reds, yellows, blues, greens, browns etc). The more sticks you have the more concentrated it will be. It's great for using to paint - use like watercolours or acrylic inks. Or you can do batik tye dye, or add to mod podge type stuff for colouring craft makes like Papier mache finger puppets or sour dough bread crafting. Hope this helps everyone and it will make your crafting money go further.
There is a bag tutorial she might love to try this can be done with the pens. I know I use wooden sticks in the tutorial but that was before I made the pens.
How great. I was just thinking about making weaving sticks out of old cheap felt markers. I thought that since people use straws, I could use markers too. I'm glad you are showing how to clean them and thread them. Thanks for sharing.
A Lady after my own heart. Most of my life I have had the attitude of I could make that cheaper or do it cheaper myself. I am all for companies making money but crafting prices are a joke, some are just way too expensive. There is a cheaper alternative to most things I just try to find them and pass it on. If you have any tips feel free to post in my craft group on Facebook Craftytwunts
Brilliant! I’ve been interested in weaving for some time now but can’t justify spending money on a regular loom just to try it. Thank you for a great alternative. This is similar to the straw weaving we use to make yarn leis.
So glad my idea helped you this is so much cheaper. If you don't have pens buy the cheapest ones you can find. In the USA try the dollar store or a similar cheap department store. You can make the clamp and just rest it on the edge of a table ( I have a tutorial on how I made my clamp from 2 off cuts oof wood)
Alison Russell's Craft Channel - Thank you. We don’t have a Dollar Store where I am but we have a Walmart. I’m sure I can find pens there that are inexpensive especially with school supplies starting to show up for the new term. I just watched your tutorial on your clamp system. That is very ingenious! I really can’t wait to get started.
Hi! Thank you. This peg weaving trick with the markers is great. There is an easy weaving tool trick used in loom knitting that also uses a marker or ball point pen hull: you just thread the weaving wool that you are using from the wide through to the narrow end of the marker. Keeping the marker in your hand, weave the thread as you would along the weaving pegs. It’s a blessing for your hands and wrists. Thought I’d share that with you. Have fun weaving!
You're welcome Sue, When I get home (i'm on holiday in Clarwater Florida) I will do a quick tutorial on a blanket from start to finish. I realize too there is a need for one. xx
I only discovered your channel yesterday and am already way behind with the housework, meals etc. but I couldn't care less. Fabulous channel and so inspiring. I could listen to you all day! (actually, that's what I'm doing) lol. x
Thank you for watching. Thank you very much. I have to promote my channel and tutorials it a lot harder as someone uploaded all my tutorials and tried to pass them off as theirs. That channel has been banned but not before it severely damaged all my ratings. So I have to try and boost my tutorial watch time, likes and subscribers.
Thanks so much for sharing this. It will be a great craft to use with my craft groups and youth club. I was trying to find your tutorial for the wooden sticks that you mentioned. I love the feelof wood.
th-cam.com/play/PLrDyWXz56tb5RS7oguIiXJXfNu81AxQ1Y.html Also these book folding tutorials are very popular in craft groups as all you need is a book you no longer want.
I'm glad I found this video! My cousin's baby shower is coming up soon and this would be the perfect gift for her baby. Thank you for sharing this hack!
So do I Terese, my mind never switches off. Horrible if it is the middle of the night. I have a writing pad by my bed where I scribble down ideas. Sometimes I get up and think what does it say !!! ha ha ha
You can weave with anything that beds enough hahaha. Try a rug for you bathroom use old bath towels cut into strips or make a big frame and make small throws from torn sheets this is great for recycling old sheets and the like.
Great video and excellent ingenuity :). I still have a huge blanket/carpet in a suitcase waiting to be finished from 20+ years ago lol. I made my sticks from 6mm doweling rods, sawed to length (with a cheap hacksaw), pointed/rounded (top & bottom to soften edge )via pencil sharpener, sanded (fine sandpaper) then waxed with a candle and buffed with a soft cloth till smooth... screwed in little brass eye-hooks at the bottom (if stick does happen to break, leave work in eye-hook & screw eye-hook into new stick) I found working on 5 sticks at a time very comfortable in the hand and portable. Join strips by placing one against the other & pick up a few loops at a time from each strip alternatively from start to end. A wool needle will suffice but my weapon of choice was a long loop turner with a small latch-hook on the end (a sewing tool for turning tubes of fabric the right-way-out)...... (also handy for threading long crocheted chains into tartan throw rugs) I used a bench vice (just because it was handy) to hold one end of my finished strip so I could make sure my core threads were even but tying core threads to anything secure would work. It isn't an essential step but it helps make really large projects sit nice and flat without any warping. Thank you so much for the video I absolutely love your working frame and for reminding me of all the joy these little sticks can bring. I hope there's a handy gem in my blurb that you can keep and use on weaving adventures too :)
well done on making your sticks yourself it sounds fab. I don't have a steady hand for that ha ha ha I never thought of eye hooks either that's a great idea. Oh yes, and I know many watchers of this tutorial will value your tips too.
I love your channel it is very helpful on knitting and in this video I loved your idea of colouring pens for weaving sticks in this video it is a great way to save money.also when I knit I give some of my work to charity xx
This is the best idea ! I paid $16 for 6 weaving sticks when I first started ,I decided I wanted a peg loom after trying the sticks but wasn't willing to pay $100 or more so I used dowel rods and a 2x4 and ended up with a 48 inch peg loom and more weaving sticks than I needed for under $15 .
It is rediculous how much they expect us to pay for craft items, isn't it? some don't even cost that much. I know there are overheads but some prices are just a joke and I refuse to pay it unless it is something I know I could never make myself.
Hi, I built the holder and got everything all set up. Love the ease. When I pulled the first time pegs out, something happened real wrong, i had 2 of the rows on the top and bottom, separated, they are hanging alone, ( over and under over and under) 6 inches away, and extra yarn on the sides of those. I'm wondering if its because the yarn is so fine. I'd like to blame it on that, because I did everything meticulously. the yarn is very very fine (thin). Thinnest I've seen, I've had it for years. Thought I'd use it up. If you can say its because of this yarn, I would feel like I'm not a failure. I would like to send a picture, but don't want to bother you...Thank you again for all your work, you bring joy...That's quite a gift. and your laughter is addicting.
Join my craft group and yes send me a pic you wont be a bother at all. I do think its because your yarn is so thin try using 2 or even 3 balls at the same time. Read my other comment too. Once it is off the weaving sticks and you smooth it all nice and even. Then tie it into place top and bottom it will all come out right but I do think your yarn is too thin by the sound of it.
6:00 threading the yarn through the holes at the end of the tube - you could use DENTAL FLOSS (or strong sewing yarn) to strengthen the yarn. (like twist the yarn with the floss, so it becomes one thread - hardly thicker but sturdier).
Susan, have you joined my facebook group? you should so you can show off any crafts you do. I would love to see any work you have made no matter what the craft is.
Steal away I don't mind. I post all my tutorials to share and I am so happy you like the idea enough to try it. This is why I do them. xx Thank you for your support I appreciate it.
so I came on TH-cam to look for something (a craft I'm doing) however I forgot what it was because I seen your video and was pulled in this is the first of the rest of your videos I'll be watching and I subscribed lol I so love listening to you I'm adhd but I just watched your entire video without blinking your voice is not just calming it's also beautiful. Thank you for sharing your budget friendly idea I'm so gonna try to make a rug. 💛
I will add it to my list Greg if you watch the shoulder bag with weaving sticks I show how to do that but unfortunately not on this one. I will do it but my list of requests is growing xx
so glad I found your channel! one, I love your accent and could listen to it all day! and two, I actually like sewing and crocheting and crafts of the like. have a good rest of your summer!!!- Amanda
I have big box with pencils 90 of them, so I made holes in and put tread ,like you did, I toke one wood stick abt 3 inches wide and drilled holes 0.5 inches apart ( half ) so total I have 90 holes with pencils inside ,Thanks you so much.
Excellent idea. My craft group friends secretly had a money collection. They sent me flowers a card and the remainder of the money as they know I am retired ( i don't make much from youtube) So I could buy crafting supplies. I Got a stand to hold my drill so I can now drill straight to make a holder like yours and so much more. hahahah I have a very big picture canvas frame I bought for £1 at a rummage sale. I will strip the canvas off. and drill holes all around it 1 inch apart. I have 100 very cheap felt pens to go all around it to make myself a weaving rug frame. wooo hoooo
Opps just seen your video ,shown hubby sent him off to garage to make me a peg loom 😂😂😊,now can use up all my t shirt yarn on bathroom mat , thanks for this 👍🏻🌺🌹💐😞😊😊😊
I really like this. If you use ball-point pens instead, it will cost a bit more, but there's less messing around with liquid ink or messy felt. You don't need to drill holes in the body of the pen, but pay attention to which way the ribbon /string will pull when you're advancing your work. I like to run my strings through the full length of the pen, so that the tension will tighten the grip of the pen's end-cap on the strings.
ha ha ha I hate my voice but then I only hear it the way others hear it if I watch a tutorial I have made. Believe me you soon get sick of it hearing it over and over when I edit the videos ha ha ha
I am going to make this for my mother. It will make it easier on her hands and she will love it to make her great grand-babies blankets. Thanks so much. do you have a video on how to make the holder?
Yes, Seanna I do here is the link. th-cam.com/video/aWY_SAKJnuE/w-d-xo.html It is very easy and you can make it whatever length you want. or just use 1 piece and drill holes to hold the pens in a line.
Very interesting video and the blanket looks pretty.. Amazon sells Bernat Blanket yarn. It feels like chenille and comes in a variety of solids and variegated colours. I've spent the last year and a half knitting 6 Afghans and three baby blankets with this blanket yarn. One grandson uses it as his primary blanket on his bed. I've never seen this done before and it's an interesting idea. I'm going to subscribe now and watch your other videos. This is the first time I've chanced upon your video. A very happy happen chance.
Thank you so much, Here in the UK we have an Aldi I'm sure they are beginning to spring up in the USA just as Lidle has ( both shops are owned by two brothers) Aldi has what is called a craft event every 8 weeks or so. When they do I stock up. Their last one was 2 weeks ago I got this type of yarn in lemon mint green white and a pink mix and a blue mix, so I now have a good few different colors. sadly they did not do this baby mix. Oh and they are £3.49 for 400g OH also I found Mariners yarn online from £1 per 100g ball wonderfully soft DK and free delivery if you spend over £25
And so cheap too. You can make them as long as you like. You can also use plastic bin bag strips to make ground protectors for the homeless with this method.
Thank you for watching. Thank you very much. I have to promote my channel and tutorials it a lot harder as someone uploaded all my tutorials and tried to pass them off as theirs. That channel has been banned but not before it severely damaged all my ratings. So I have to try and boost my tutorial watch time, likes and subscribers.
this is the second video of yours I have just watched, just found you LOL you are amazing, and I love listing to your accent, but you are so calm and detailed explaining what you are doing wow, so of course I had to subscribe and now going to watch some more. Thank you very much
Many have asked how to start this blanket and about the clamp.
It is in Scotland in the United Kingdom Yes it would have to be international but apparently if you check the part where it says its a gift it is much cheaper to send. I appreciate it but don't go out of your way thank you xx

In the US, it would make no difference in the cost of postage if it is marked as a gift. Any difference could be in customs charges to you.
Weaving a blanket
What a wonderful idea! I received weaving sticks for Christmas, but seeing this video makes me want to go find pens so I can try this. Thank you for being so encouraging and relatable!
Omg you never cease to amaze me on your video's and recicle to help with the cost of crafting thanks Allison
You are so welcome!

Great Thea, It is so cheap to do too.
Me too!
Wow what a brilliant idea using the felt tips, would never have imagined something so lovely as your blanket could have been made with them, thank you for the inspiration

Maria Olsdotter o
I don't understand why you need the loop of yarn through the tip of the pen. Are you selling the wooden stand or directions for them?
You rock Alison. Thank you so much for showing how to use the felt pens as a weaving tool and how to weave and in the process you have saved me money as well.
Glad to help have a look at the weaving bag tutorials it shows you how to tie it all off.
Wow! Love your videos! Just learned how to do this today and I have already decided to add this to my available crafting skills. Thanks so much for the effort you've made to school us!
Thank you so much for watching my channel I appreciate it a lot thank you.
another amazing idea for those of us who are on a tight budget and want to stick weave! you are just the best! thank you.
OK , that I will be excited to watch.
What a brilliant and innovative crafter you are Alison, not everyone can spend £££s on equipment or wool, you are just so clever.
You could make a square frame drill holes and glue them into place and make a pom pom blanket loom frame from them instead of nails I am gong to try that too.
I'm not all that excited about weaving but I've watched this multiple times just for the lovely accented voice!
Going to check out John too!
tell him I sent you hahaah
I love your channel and what you do Lady, together with your accent. It's absolutely lovely. You should never be quiet. It would be a crime.

terese lapree I use the inserts in my afterschool group to tint glue for art projects
my sister took them to make alcohol inks.
Alison Russell's Craft Channel are you scottish? I just love your accent!!
Nice... what a great idea !!! really well done... and recycle old color pens too...
Thank you
Well explained, so simple to do. I will do this with my 10 year old niece. Thank you so much.
There is a bag tutorial she might love to try this can be done with the pens. I know I use wooden sticks in the tutorial but that was before I made the pens.
luv luv luv this weaving sticks technique. can't wait to put my stuff together & get started. love your tutorial 's. thanx for sharing your talent.
I will try and do a quick video of the clamp I made to hold them all together
I have done this sort of weaving while watching tv, because it is so easy.
i love it

Thank you, there is a quick tutorial to put holes in chunky ones if you buy them without a hole already in the tip of the pen.
Very nice lesson! Excellent. Going to buy pens NOW!
Your welcome xx
Beautiful weaving work
Thank you.
Awesome thanks for the share. I love your videos and have learnt a lot from them.

I used a bench vice (just because it was handy) to hold one end of my finished strip so I could make sure my core threads were even but tying core threads to anything secure would work.
When watching your video reminds of a peg loom without the holder for the pegs.
my God that is so brilliant love the blanket you r so cleverer x
Thank you.
First time seeing your videos and I have to say this is genius. And I absolutely love your voice.
Thank you very much I hope you watch more as I have shared lots of great crafting ideas xx
I love your channel it is very helpful on knitting and in this video I loved your idea of colouring pens for weaving sticks in this video it is a great way to save money.also when I knit I give some of my work to charity xx
Thank you very much xx
Alison Russell's Craft Channel it's no problem I just wanted to let you know I watch your videos over again and follow along xx
Your work is very neat and beautiful
Thank you so much, I do hope you subscribe I appreciate it.
Great idea thank you xx I will pass it on to others. Thank you for watching I appreciate the support.
I love watching this...lol..I've watched n commented a couple times now

Thank you for watching. Thank you very much. I have to promote my

tutorials and tried to pass them off as theirs. That channel has been
banned but not before it severely damaged all my ratings. So I have to
try and boost my tutorial watch time, likes and subscribers.

I have 100 very cheap felt pens to go all around it to make myself a weaving rug frame. wooo hoooo
Very interesting good explain each step
Opps just seen your video ,shown hubby sent him off to garage to make me a peg loom 😂😂😊,now can use up all my t shirt yarn on bathroom mat , thanks for this 👍🏻🌺🌹💐😞😊😊😊
Your welcome xx
these are great for the "straw"leis made with fun fur
Thank you for watching I appreciate it. xx
Love the idea something new for me to try and learn... Love it
I really like this.
How do you keep the string or yarn up through the pen? Do you put the end cap on and have some of the wool out the top?
Yes, then I tie a knot to prevent slipping.
felt-tips. great idea! amazing tutorial, lovely accent! thank you so much
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my channel. I appreciate it.

You are so welcome!

That's really good am going give it a go xxx
Thank you. xx
Oh and they are £3.49 for 400g OH also I found Mariners yarn online from £1 per 100g ball wonderfully soft DK and free delivery if you spend over £25
WOW!! So clever .
This has become such a big hit. I am so glad I showed how to make these as it has helped so many crafters on a tight budget.
Wow very creative!
And so cheap too. You can make them as long as you like. You can also use plastic bin bag strips to make ground protectors for the homeless with this method.
Gorgeous beautiful blanket ...can you share how tie the wool to form the pom pom flowers ..I did not see you tying the wool ..thanks
great idea!!! thanks for sharing!
