My mom worked at Universal Studios from about 1963-72. On one occasion when I was with my mom, with my brothers, I was rolling around in Raymund Burr's wheelchair prop for his Ironside TV series. Darren McGavin just happened to be passing through, and saw us. He looked at me and said, "hello young man", shook my hand, and then proceeded on to where he was going to. He made me feel special, didn't know who he was at the time. I really liked Darren McGavin in the Night Stalker TV series that was on for just the 1974-75 TV season. My older brother told of the time when he was with my mom on the TV set of the Munsters. He operated the statue at the bottom of the staircase that made it rise where Spot, the Munster's pet dwelt. He then said that one of the prop men demonstrated how they shoot all of the spider webs for the Munster's house, using some sort of a conical device where they sprayed out from! I wish I had seen that!
You certainly have a very interesting background with show business. Entertaining to people like me who have nothing in common with this. Thanks for sharing !
I haven't had the pleasure of seeing this since it's original air date. This series should be restored and released on dvd. It would be a great addition to every McGavin fan's collection. Sincere thanks go to you for posting this.
@@FredFlix I remember Burt talking about that on Carson one night. But Robert Vaughn in his memoir talked about what an explosive temper Burt had, too.
I watched this series way back when. I never watched Kolchek, but am watching it now. I loved Darin McGavin. He was like the uncle I never had. I still think he was the nicest guy in the history of the planet.
Wow, Darren never disappoints. He's always great. Thanks for posting this. I only wish that they whole series was available. I'd buy a dvd set of this in a second. It is so much better than anything on tv these days.
Huge fan of Darren McGavin from "A Christmas Story". It's fun discovery his other work "Mike Hammer," "Kolchak-The Night Stalker",etc. Thanx for sharing💯
Enjoy everything with Darren, esp Night Stalker way back when, not so much on a modern rewatch though. Wish there were more eps of this, but glad to have had at least pilot and this one. Thx for the upload.
It was filmed in color by Universal TV and broadcast by NBC in color in 1968. This is (simply) a b&w print. So, "no, the color hasn't faded -- THAT MUCH." FYI, money ALWAYS being a consideration, color film is more expensive than monochrome, i.e., b&w. 35 mm B&W prints were used by the film editors to assemble the program from which the cutters of the color negative used the precise instructions -- to the frame (24 frames per second) -- to create the complete answer / 'air' print and 'back-up' 16 mm prints.. Duplicate b&w prints, usually in 16 mm [cheaper to mail / transport than the heavy 35 mm reels], were made by the dozens and sent gratis to U.S. military bases and installations, including ships, to entertain the servicemen and women -- WHEREVER they may be. This being the era of the Vietnam War, seeing familiar American entertainment programming provided a 'sense of home' feeling. This print is missing the main title; possibly to abide by U.S. copyright restrictions of the musical theme or the episode complete. Thank you, FredFlix.
James Edwards guest starring on an episode of The Nurses brought me here. Never heard of him previous, never heard of the Nurses and never head of this show. All terrific.
He refused to name names during the McCarthy hearings. Poor guy died of an apparent heart attack just a few years later (1970), at only 51 years old. This saddens me. I would’ve enjoyed seeing him in “elder” roles.
I love McGavin! I need to get the entire series of Mike Hammer with him. This was 1968?? I thought most things were in color by then? I wasn't born til 81 so I don't actually know, but it looks like it's after Mike Hammer. I'm glad it's black and white regardless. I am 37 and I rarely watch television or movies in color anymore. I only want the old stuff. Haven't got to watch this yet, but I can't wait to see it. Wasn't this a series too? Thanks for sharing!
I watched this series when I was a kid. His character lived in a house in the middle of a highway cloverleaf. I thought it was a good series! Unfortunately, this series was cancelled after a short run by the network.
Well, thank you so much for this episode, Fred. Darren McGavin was one of my favorite actors and always turned in exemplary performances whenever he was featured! Since you seem to uncover some amazing introductions to shows, I was wondering if you have complete main titles of all the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie and Wednesday Mystery Movies? The first Wednesday Mystery Movie theme was composed by Quincy Jones and featured Madigan, Cool Million, and Banacek.
This is wild! This was the 1960's right? McGavin's character actually flirting w/ a woman of color [24:20]. How'd they get this passed the almighty Censors? This is so fantastic. A hidden gem.
@Marie Smith Agreed.. things are far from ducky in the 21st century...in 1960's laws against inter-racial marriage..case in point:Loving v. Virginia on June 12, 1967. So yeah this is a "WOW moment in entertainment.
50 years ago. Thanks. Good series: remember it and the ankle holster. I was 14/15. [Did not like the way he manhandled the black gal]. Excellent music.
Darren McGavin flicks never disappoint. 👌🏼

You're welcome, GK.
McGavin was born to play a private eye. For modern actors I could only see Chris Meloni playing this type of role. God he'd be fantastic.
Thanks for the post. I. had the pleasure of meeting McGavin & Kathie. Browne when they were working in NYC. 2 nice people & fine actors.
You're welcome, though Burt Reynolds didn't seem to like working with McGavin.
@@FredFlix I remember Burt talking about that on Carson one night. But Robert Vaughn in his memoir talked about what an explosive temper Burt had, too.

Certainly one of finest actors of his generation.
Wow, Darren never disappoints. He's always great. Thanks for posting this. I only wish that they whole series was available. I'd buy a dvd set of this in a second. It is so much better than anything on tv these days.
I was 10 years old when this show aired and I watched every single episode while adjusting the rabbit ear antenna on my 12 inch Panasonic TV set.
YEAH, BACK WHEN THERE WERE 4 VHF AND 3 UHF CHANNELS.
I like anything with Darren mcgavin in it. That was awsome‼️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Huge fan of Darren McGavin from "A Christmas Story". It's fun discovery his other work "Mike Hammer," "Kolchak-The Night Stalker",etc. Thanx for sharing💯

For 1968, this is a very hard-edged, gritty tale. Great work Darren, and thank you for the upload.
These Universal shows were all top-shelf in terms of actors, sets, locations, production values, and that trademark swellegant music.
I'm a big fan of McGavin in "Kolchak: The Night Stalker," but I'd never seen this program before now. Thanks for posting it.
You're welcome, Julian.
Great series thank you
Roy Huggins classic. I watched this one season wonder as a kid and enjoyed the pilot movie too. It would be great to see all episodes again.
Hear, hear.
Thanks for posting.
If you have any more of these episodes I would be obliged if you would post them.
This looks to have been a great TV show! And I love Darren McGavin whatever he's in! But I honestly have never heard of this show!
I grew up on all these shows back then they are weak compared to know but to me there fantastic 📽️💯
Being in Black & White,it has a "Mike Hammer"feel! Another great McGavin role!
Sam Houston said it's because it was so old. The film probably faded. Speaking of old, Sam Houston must be around 200 years old or so!

Thank you.
You're welcome, Daryl.
Love Darren McGavin. Have never seen Outsider or Riverboat. Love Night Stalker. Would love to see free episodes.
SO MANY Thanks for this, Fred! If you have any more, would LOVE to see them!
Glad you enjoyed it, HG.
This is a new one on me. Loved the episode. Would love to see more.Thank you for sharing. You

You're welcome, Alan.
Originally telecast on November 27, 1968.

It IS color. The print is just faded. Could be easily fixed.
It's just really faded out.tv shows went color in '66. If you like McGavin, I highly recommend Kolchak: the Night Stalker
@Seamus Burke he did but in the 80,s.
I don't recall this show thanks Fred.
You're welcome, Gary.
I love how they never close the windows or lock cars in these shows?!
I watched this series when I was a kid. His character lived in a house in the middle of a highway cloverleaf.
I thought it was a good series! Unfortunately, this series was cancelled after a short run by the network.
ANOTHER GREAT SERIES CANCELED BY THE TV NETWORKS BOY DO THEY SUCK.
All these parts I never knew Darren McGavin played??
Mike Hammer brought me here. And I stayed..
I don't think this series is availble on DVD or anywhere else.
One of the best shows in 1968, Fred! Thanks so much for the upload and do you have any more episodes of The Outsider?
I might have a couple but generally I no longer upload complete old shows. However, I might do it when I run out of ideas for more creative videos.

Night Stalker by any other name.
No, its is better than that.

It would be pretty easy to restore the color on this. I'll tell you if you're interested.
@32:15 oh my god...Kolchak mistakes the black woman for a werewolf and shoots a silver bullet into her
ummm nope
Should have lasted longer then it did!
28:45 Louie Pheeters on loan from Gunsmoke! 😅😂
❤👍👏
50 years ago. Thanks. Good series: remember it and the ankle holster. I was 14/15. [Did not like the way he manhandled the black gal]. Excellent music.

Magavin playing the reverse race card on the chief! Dang!
They were playing the race card back then too.
Today the Feminists would catch a tantrum with the way he manhandled that female at 36:33. Lol.
🔵WELL, THIS ONE DIDN'T MAKE SENSE🔴
Pity the girl was a baddie!
Terrible toupee.
Surely, can't be serious 😂😂😂😂
